How Business Has Changed Me

If you’ve been alive for any significant amount of time you’ll have already come to realize that we never stop changing, growing and learning. I’m a big believer that ‘nurture’ has a greater effect on our personalities than ‘nature’ does. That’s why I think the jobs we choose can have an effect on how we grow as a person.

Obviously I choose to start my own business because I wanted to make money, but the choice was so much more than that for me. It’s been (and still is) a journey of personal growth that challenges me, brings me joy and ultimately changes who I am as a person. I know, deep, eh?

I was thinking about how my home business has changed me and I think it’s pretty interesting. I thought you’d maybe like to read about it because I think you’ll be able to relate (if you’ve experienced this) or even look forward to (if you’ve not yet been changed by a business).

Working From Home With an Online Business Has Changed Me. How? Here’s a few of the many ways…

1. Business Gave Me Confidence

I remember the first interview I did online about business many years ago. Kelly McCausey interviewed me at Solo Smarts (previously WAHMTalkRadio) and I was so nervous I could BARELY BREATHE! Now I do audio with ease and confidence. Obviously practice makes this easier, but it’s not just that, I’ve become more confident in the person I am and the way I live my life thanks to my business.

2. Business Helped Me Watch My Money

I’ll admit this one was a long time coming but I believe I’m finally coming out the other end of a lifetime habit of overspending! As you read this I’ve got money in savings, checking, in an RRSP, an RESP and my credit card is on it’s way towards a $0 balance. I’m VERY proud of that and I know my business has helped me get there.

3. Business Made Me Versatile, and Proud Of It!

When I was a little girl I thought you had to pick one profession for the rest of your life, like many people did. As I grew up I really couldn’t pick anything. I thought there was something wrong with me because I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Then, as I grew in business I realized it was (and still is) OK to change your life direction or totally switch it up every now and then. As long as you can pay your bills and you’re happy then who is anyone to tell you that you have to stay in one spot all your life. Phoey on that I say!

4. Business Allowed Me To Live MY Bliss

In my life nobody really told me that running a business is a life option until I had my son, and by then I think I didn’t really believe it was possible for me.

As I Sweat, I Plotted and Planned…Yes, working in that factory really sucked, I couldn’t wait until the day I quit. So, what I did was start a business as a Virtual Assistant and within nine months I left my job. That was in 2007 and I’ve been working from home ever since.Over the last few years I’ve done a lot of things but I’ve kept my heart in the Virtual Assistance business because I can so relate to the ladies who do such great work there. I am also still in the services business myself, just don’t call myself a VA anymore.

That’s why I wrote 24 Hour VA Profits.

Then, let me know what you think!

I don’t know why it is but I really hated being an employee. I think what got me was that I felt it wasn’t fair that someone else decided how much I was worth to them and that I was basically ‘stuck’ at what they told me I could make, indefinitely, until they decided I could make more. I didn’t like someone else having that kind of control over my life.

I so remember the days when I took a job at the automotive factory where they painted car bumpers. I have a diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology but I took the job as a temporary, close to home option while my son was at home being watched by my mom. So anyway, I HATED that job! The factory was soo very dark, even during the day. It smelled of paint fumes (obviously) and everyone around me mostly spoke Cantonese. It was like I was all alone in a group of people.

I’m a social person, I’m a creative person and I’m a person who loves change and challenge so this was literally driving me crazy. I remember the day I decided I was absolutely going to turn this around was when I was told I had to clean the huge ovens that the bumpers go through to be painted (NOT in my job description). Again, I hated being told what to do, basically or I’d lose my job, and I really wasn’t happy about being in an oven (lol). It was dirty and it was hard labor and I wasn’t for it.

Anyway, I’ve rambled on a bit more than I wanted to but you get my point…..

I wasn’t Happy!

These days I do whatever the hell I want, when I want and how I want. Nobody tells me what to do. Nobody makes me clean (or get in) the oven (haha) and nobody tells me that I’m living in a fairytale dreamland with this crazy internet idea (post for another day).

I am SO Happy and So Thankful that I get to make a living doing what I do. I love the people I work with and I love hearing about the results they are getting from the help me and my business have given them, there’s nothing like it.

I hope you get to live life the way you want, too. I really wish that for you and I wish for you to know it is possible and there are real live people out there (like me, but I’m not the only one!) who get to call this work.

Thanks for reading this article all the way through and now I have a question for you….

Has business changed YOU? How?

You know Jill I used that analogy the other day about building a website. Many people think their business is ready to make money as soon as it’s finished.

It’s kinda like spending nine months during pregnancy to build a baby and then once the baby is born saying: “Ok, I’m done, see ya later… go get a job!”

EXACTLY the way I feel, Angela! I absolutely hated being an employee and even though I drag my feet getting my own business up and running, its something I adore doing! You are in inspiration and your website and products are very helpful! Thank you so much!

    Thanks Angela,
I am just at the very beginning of the VA path and am loving the learning! I’ve been a massage therapist for 25 years and love working with people, sharing something very real and important. Now I am just eating up the tech learning and when I saw your webinar (Virtsuosos…) I realized how exciting it will be to learn how to offer something in this new realm. Brains and bodiesboth need challenge and attention. This biz is helping me to broaden, to merge aspects together and therefore enliven myself. Great question, thanks. Suzannah
