In a recent post I mentioned some of my lessons learned the hard way. My hope is that the post will serve as a warning and a ‘don’t do this!’ suggestion for anyone who might recognize them.
Today I want to expand on one of the biggest mistakes or as I like to say “learning experiences” I’ve made in business.
Following the MONEY
In early 2002 I started a soapmaking production, wholesale and retail business (I know – ambitious!) out of a hobby and had dreams of millions and a huge vision.
In 2002 I signed my son up for a Registered Education Savings Plan – it’s a plan to save for college. Then while the lady was at my home my mom (who was also signing up for one for my son) asked about the business opportunity. She told us how much money she made and how great an opportunity it was and I jumped right into it.
In 2005 I found a candle business website and a lady who said she made a lot of MONEY online building her MLM candle business. It sounded awesome and I jumped again.
In 2006 I started my virtual assistant business not because I loved it, but because I wanted to quit my job and make money online.
Countless places in between those listed above I followed little trails and tricks of things people said would make a LOT of money – and guess what? Most of them just cost me a LOT of money.
I have to admit this lesson took me literally YEARS to learn. Do I feel dumb that I kept chasing the money? Well, ya, but I want to share it with you to hopefully get you to stop and think if you’re doing the same, feeling frustrated and just not feelin’ the MOJO???
Why did I keep chasing the money?
Good question. Geeze I think it really comes from issues from my childhood. From wanting to prove to my parents that I am that above average child they thought me to be.
Where ever it comes from that doesn’t matter.
Chasing the money just doesn’t work – trust me I’ve learned the hard way.
So what’s the moral of the story?
Find something you have true passion for!
It’s 2009 and I’m very proud to say I am now running a real business that I love.
- I love helping others learn how to use the internet to make a real difference to their business.
- I love sharing my story with you, my reader.
- I love connecting with students through my one on one or group training programs.
- I love talking to a live group of people about what I do and how they can do it.
- I love interviewing amazing guests on my internet talk radio show.
Phew!
Are you doing what you love, really? Are you chasing money?
It’s not too late to turn it around, it’s never to late!

I’m so happy for you!!! I too felt at times that I was chasing the money. However, now I’m really focused on starting my current business and although I have no income from it as yet, I am still happy.

That’s great Felicia! Now I hope no one mis-reads that I’m saying we shouldn’t MAKE money too. But I think we need to have a really good balance between what feels true to us and what is an actual profitable business.
I’m glad you found something that you really enjoy. Now to just focus on building that income from it and really getting yourself out there!
