The internet is made up of content. Good content, bad content, just ok content and plain junk – it’s all out there. There are millions upon millions of websites filled with content. So, does it really make a difference to your business to write up an article and send it out there on the web?

The answer really depends.
Just like anything else you do online, when you decide to do article marketing you really need to start with a plan and end with a goal.
Your plan might be to write an article and submit it to as many article directories (websites filled with reprint articles) as possible. This may or may not be the best plan for you. The only way to know for sure would be to test it. Since many of the article directories are only visited by other people posting articles, you may want to consider only posting to the directories more targeted to your niche and of course the most popular directories.
Another plan would be to do your keyword research and strategically name your article with a keyword phrase. Then if you get your article into the right directory (like Ezine Articles) you will be found in the search engines for your chosen keyword phrase.
How do you market with articles? Here is what you’ll need to effectively market your articles on the internet:
· Article – Between 400-700 words is usually a good length for an article that will be submitted to the article directories.
· Bio – Every article you submit should have a bio. These are usually 1-3 sentences and should contain a call to action related to the article. Also the links should be linking to an area of your site directly related to the article. You’ll want to have atext and a HTML version ready because some directories want both and of course you want HTML when possible so you get a live link to your website.
· Keywords – Many article directories ask for keywords. Do your research BEFORE you write the article and you can base your article on keywords you know people are looking for. Wordtracker.com and SEOBook.com are two great places to find keyword research tools.
· Email Address – When you start submitting to directories you will sometimes end up on spam lists or will just end up getting a lot of spam from the actual directories. It is a very good idea to have a separate email address if you plan on submitting to a number of directories. Gmail works great for this. Sign up for a free account at gmail.google.com.
· How Many Directories You’d Like Submitted – Decide on where you’d like to have your articles submitted. There are hundreds of directories and you can spend a lot of time submitting to them. Choose some that are most targeted to your market and also a few of the more popular.
My advice to anyone marketing their articles on the internet is to plan your time wisely. Also, remember that there are more places than just article directories to get your content out there. You can offer original articles to high ranking websites, be a guest blogger or offer an original article for a newsletter article.
Track your results, find out what works and keep doing it! And always produce high quality information that will keep people coming back to read more.
