Increase Your Blog Readers and Visitors

There are so many little things you can do to increase your blog readership and I wanted to share some of the things that have worked for me.
So here it goes:
- Move your RSS button up above the first fold
—> If people want to subscribe they don’t want to have to hunt for the RSS feed. Make it clear and easy to see.
- Explain How to subscribe to your RSS feed
—> It’s always a good idea to have a spot on your blog that explains how people can subscribe to your feed and why they should do so. Usually I put this right under the big RSS Button.
- Allow email opt-ins to your RSS Feed
—> There are a lot of people out there who do not understand how or why they should subscribe to an RSS feed but popping in their email address is something they completely understand. My subscription rate jumped up when I did this on another blog.
- Post as often as possible!
—> I remember hearing somewhere a while ago that you shouldn’t post to your blog too often or people will get sick of hearing from you so I listened to that for a while when I first started and only posted about once every week or so.
That’s not good advice. At first you should be blogging at least every day. You need lots of good quality content to attract both search engines and real people.
- Play off current popular trends
—> I’m sure you’ve seen multitudes of Obama and marketing posts by now. Using a popular topic you can play of current trends and tie that into your blog.
- Reply to comments on your blog
—> When I go to a blog and the person who owns the blog actually responds to people’s comments I’m more encouraged to post because I know I have a clear path to communicating with them. I like how Tim Ferris does this on his blog, he actually goes into the comment and puts some lines like this:
———————————-
and then posts a reply to the comment right under where the comment was made. He gets a ton of comments though so this makes sense or else people who be lost as to who he’s talking to.
- Add pictures
—> Michel Fortin wrote about how adding pictures is important on his blog and ever since I’ve been using pictures frequently in my posts. I get them for about $2 each on iStock (or I use one I have on my computer).
- Make your text easy to read
—> Break your text up with spaces, bolding, italics and bullet points. It makes your posts easier to read. Lynn Terry on ClickNewz.com does this well and it just makes the posts much easier to read and scannable.
- Add your signature
—> I was having a discussion the other day with a lady who said she loves my blog and has it on her feed reader but she didn’t realize that it was MY blog — meaning she didn’t connect my name to the ‘face’ of my blog since it only shows up in her feed reader. Now I do have my picture and my name on the main page of my blog but as I read back over my posts I noticed my name doesn’t show up anywhere on them. So from now on I’ll be adding my graphic signature and maybe also my company name at the bottom of each blog post so people reading my blog actually know who I am!
In case you haven’t noticed I absolutely love blogging. It is such a great way to connect with YOU, my reader, and to get feedback, to test ideas and to create a conversation.

Hi Mike,
Are you asking if I can help you by doing it for you or give you advice on it?
I can certainly make suggestions on how to get more traffic but first I’d need to know what you are doing now. What methods are you currently using to drive traffic to your website?
ps. Thanks for the question. I will provide a detailed blog post on how to get more traffic soon.
