Remember that Saturday Night Live skit with Chris Farley?
Well, Chris’ character, Matt Foley, is a motivational speaker. I was young when the episode was on but still saw the humor in someone who’s supposed to be highly successful living in a van (and the fact that it was down by the river seems to make it hilarious!)
Here’s the exact quote I just found in a partial youtube video of the skit:
“I am 35 years old, I am divorced and I live in a van down by the river.”
Actually, here’s the clip too, it’s only 13 seconds long:
What’s my point?
Be careful who you listen to online.
You don’t know who is really successful.
Online it’s easier than anything to pretend to be someone your not. Unethical entrepreneurs are out there, people who haven’t even bought what they’re selling, who don’t know how to make money online and they’re trying to tell you how to do it so they can ‘finally’ get rich themselves.
I say be careful.
Now I have a confession of my own to make.
Well if you’ve been reading my blog for a while it probably won’t be a surprise:
I’m not rich. I don’t make six figures (yet). I don’t even own my own home (yet). I’m separated. A mom of one. Although I’m happy to say I DON’T live in a van down by the river, lol.
I do live comfortable and make a full time living on the internet. That’s exciting to me and I am happy to share with people how I got where I am right now. As I move my business towards higher and higher goals I do also plan to continue to share my experience and expertise to help as many people as I can get there too.
Also to me it’s not all about money. There are plenty of opportunities to just hype the crap out of things and make a lot of money. I could try those and probably make a lot more than I do right now. But I’m about building a business and building real relationships with real people. That’s more important to me than having a fancy home, car and designer sunglasses. (by the way, I just don’t get it at all why people pay hundreds for sunglasses)
I really believe in this ‘freedom’ you can gain from working from home, on the internet.
My warning is to just be careful.
Does your mentor live in a van down by the river?
I hope you do your due diligence and find that out before spending a lot of money buying from them.
I also hope this post will help you relate to who I am a bit more and maybe you’ll consider joining me on this home business journey so we can grow and learn more together.

p.s. Wasn’t Chris Farley funny? I watched that video twice and both times had to laugh out loud.
p.p.s. People who inspired this post: Lynn Terry & Nicole Dean, Chris Brogan, Tiffany Dow, Sharon McMillan

Another gem of a post Angela! Thanks for listing me as one of the folks who inspired this post, of course that goes both ways as I come to your site for much inspiration
You are living proof of what solid business practices, continuing learning, and commitment can do for someone who wants to make a full time living from their online business.
Sharon McMillan´s last blog ..A Video Shout out to Nicole Dean and Lynn Terry
Gosh, ain’t that the truth! It always amazes me when someone steps onto the scene to sell a $97 ebook on how to make a million dollars with a blog – by someone who doesn’t even blog!
Do your research, know your mentors – great advice, Angela!
Sharon – thank you so much!
Lynn – yea it’s really annoying. As someone who provides a service sometimes I come across potential clients or clients who I just have to shake my head and wonder if they really believe they know what they’re talking about.
If you can’t prove it – you shouldn’t sell it!
