Feel Confused When Picking Keywords For Your Website?

Control keyWhen I’m working with clients on their websites and on their affiliate programs sometimes the question of how to pick keywords for their websites comes up.

Many people misunderstand how keywords work. You can use keywords to get found in the search engine but they don’t work like magic. You can’t just choose a few words and expect to get tons of traffic. It takes time and effort to have your keyword targeting really pay off.

In order to get found in the search engines, you have to write naturally around a specific topic and add a lot of content (ie. hundreds of pages).

Don’t Just Choose Your Words Carefully

People won’t find you ONLY through the words you choose. Plus you might never get ranked on the first page if you choose highly popular terms.

For example, visitors came to my own site here at MarketersMojo.com last month by typing in 268 different keyword phrases.

Three Main Keyword ‘Keys’

I mentioned keywords are not the only factor. Here are some of the main factors:

1. Keywords – mentioned already

2. Lots of content – mentioned – search engines love very frequently updated sites, lots of original, quality content

3. Inbound links – the more inbound links you get from other quality sites the more regarded you will be by the search engines as ‘valid’, each link counts as sort of a ‘vote’.

My own SEO Strategy:

- I don’t focus on just a few terms. What I do is research keywords every time I do a blog post. Here’s a good example for you:

See this blog post here:

I had an article I wanted to write on keeping track of projects. Then I went to the wordtracker free keyword tool and found out that the exact term “keep track of projects online” is searched 15 times per day. So I wrote a post titled that on my blog and provided a lot of quality content on that topic. Then I also submitted the article to ezine articles.

And if you search google for that exact term right now you should see that my Ezine Articles is #1 out of 30 million and my website is #3.

Now it may not seem like 15 a day is much, but do that 10 times and it’s 150 per day, 100 and it’s 1500 per day. And of course some terms get higher searches than others.
