Super Affiliate Challenge Day 7 – Monetize Your Site

23 September 2009 | 0 Comments

Today is Day 6 of the Super Affiliate Challenge (click that link if you want to see what it’s all about).

I’m reviewing another Chapter from the Super Affiliate Handbook by Rosalind Gardner and getting more pumped about ramping up my affiliate marketing. This chapter covers Monetizing Your Site.

Recently I’ve been working with a client to help him promote affiliate products on his site.

He originally built the website to promote his own book but decided he also wanted to do a ‘little’ affiliate marketing on the side as well. So he started signing up for all kinds of programs and asking me to add the banner ads to his ‘recommended products’ page.

As I explained to him this is not a good way to make any money as an affiliate. Yes – banner ads have their use but just throwing up a bunch of banners ads all on one page and expecting people to click through and buy with any kind of consistency is not realistic at all.

In order to monetize your site you need to put real effort into it. You need to show and tell people why they should invest in the program or product you are recommending.

This chapter of the handbook covers monetization of sites.

001_06One of the most useful parts of this chapter is a list of 20 questions to ask before you sign up for an affiliate program. It’s important that you choose a good program so you:
a) Get the proper tools
b) Get paid
c) Get treated fairly as an affiliate

20 Questions to Choose Which Affiliate Programs to Promote

In the past I have received questions from people about how to know an affiliate program is legitimate and that they will actually pay you. The 20 questions covered in this chapter are a great way to weed out the bad and find your way to the gems.

Beyond the 20 questions you also want to compare affiliate programs on factors such as date paid, commissions and bonuses.

Promo Tools to Make More Sales

Now, once you’ve signed up for the affiliate program you’re going to need promotional tools. The handbook covers 9 different tools including Text Links, Banners (as I mentioned above) and Reviews.

One of my favorite ways to promote products as an affiliate is reviews. I’m sure you’ve noticed that this 14-day Challenge is a great big review/ case study of the Super Affiliate Handbook and I do use my affiliate link when recommending you check it out.

Promote Products You Believe In

Another thing mentioned in the book and something I ALWAYS do is that it’s much better if you promote a product you are very familiar with. It’s perfect if you can buy the product. I bought the Super Affiliate Handbook over a year ago.

ACTION TAKEN

  • Joined Commission Junction and Linkshare for my fairly new niche sites that sell physical products
  • Went through the checklist of 20 items and made sure my own affiliate program matches up to the requirements
  • Worked on my list of products to promote here at MarketersMojo.com, my main site
  • Created a product promotion spreadsheet for each of the four affiliate niche sites I own.
  • See you tomorrow for Day 8 – Market Your Site
