Over the weekend my son and I visited with a friend and her family. Sheri and I have known each other and been friends for twenty years.
When I got to her house Sheri wasn’t back from shopping yet so her daughter and son let Hayden and I in. Her daughter told me they were gone to get movies too and she thought they might be getting the movie ‘The Last Unicorn’.
Well I just about went crazy!
I told her daughter that I loved that movie more than I loved any movie, ever. I said it with such passion and emotion that it actually surprised me.
I mean when I was a kid I loved Annie, Alice in Wonderland and a host of others but this one was different, so different.
25 year old memories
When I was a kid I absolutely LOVED the movie. It evoked such emotion, the characters were so real, the story was so moving. I had no idea that Sheri also loved this movie too.
So here we were, two full grown adults in our thirties, watching a 25 year old cartoon. We sat in awe remembering like it was yesterday the amazing story of the Last Unicorn on earth who faces the Red Bull to free all the others.
Of course Sheri’s husband and sister in law thought we were crazy as they were watching too. The kids were off playing while the adults watched a cartoon. My son did watch it later though and he’s hooked on the movie now too!
They’ll Remember How You Made Them FEEL
There’s a quote from Maya Angelou that goes like this:
“People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.”
That’s exactly what happened with this movie that didn’t happen with the others.
Sure Annie was entertaining and the others had some emotion but everything about the Last Unicorn felt real. I remember how I felt while crying for her when she was transformed into a human by Schmendrick the Magician in order to save her from the Red Bull. I remember the feelings of seeing how much the Prince loved her, so much that he risked his life to save her and the unicorns.
I was telling Sheri that I didn’t really remember what happened in the movie, but I sure as heck didn’t forget how it made me FEEL – after more than twenty YEARS.
I could go on and on about how much I loved the Last Unicorn and I just might, but not on this blog..
Customer Emotion
On this blog I want to mention that if we can evoke the kind of emotion that gets remembered in our customers then there will be nothing that can stop your success.
How do you evoke emotion? I think it’s pretty simple actually. Put everything you’ve got into your business. Put your own emotions out there and show people you are human.
A great example of someone who does this is Scott Tousignant who I interviewed recently. He creates emotion in his customers because he is so emotionally involved. He puts real, solid, un-fakeable effort into his business and it creates passionate customers who want to sing his praises.
In my own business there have been times when I held back because I wanted to appear professional or I wasn’t sure I was doing the right thing but I now realize I’ve got to be the real me. If I don’t seem professional enough to some then they’re not my target market so that’s no big deal.
The more authentic you can be in your business the more emotion you will bring, and the more emotion you bring the more emotion you will evoke in your customers and potential customers.
That will lead you directly to your path of finding your Marketers Mojo!

p.s. What do you think? Do you remember a time when a business got you all emotional? Have you watched The Last Unicorn? I’d love to hear your comments!

You just helped me out a bit, Angela. My posts so far have been largely personal, and I’ve been wondering, “Gee, is this what people want to read? I mean, do they really care that I couldn’t hang laundry outside because of my rambunctious son?”
But I can’t help it! Me just kind of shows up. Thanks for validating my “blog voice.”
