What Have They Got That I Haven’t Got?

papa-smurfCan you believe they still play the Smurfs on TV?

I loved that show when I was a kid and now my son is enjoying it to.

Yesterday there was an interesting episode on about wisdom. Both Brainy smurf and Gargamel wanted to be more wise. They were trying to figure out what their mentors had that they didn’t. Well, they came to the conclusion that it was a beard.

So both Brainy and Gargamel cast spells on themselves to grow a beard. The beard grew and grew until it was completely out of control and had them immobilized. No good!

Wisdom Comes From Experience

Finally they realized wisdom comes from experience, not beards, and they’d probably have to wait another 200 or 300 years until they became as wise and grew their beards.

What the heck does this have to do with building a business you love?

Well, in the show they were trying to figure out what their mentors had that they didn’t.

Many people do this in internet marketing. They look at people who they think are making big money online and then try to copy them. The problem is you can’t possibly see all the experiences these people you are modeling have gone through – all you really see are their BEARDS (metaphorically of course – I know the women mentors won’t appreciate me saying they have beards!!!). It’s not what’s on the outside that counts, it’s what’s on the inside.

It’s not so much that they’ve got some special skill you haven’t got or they’ve got a tool you just absolutely need. They have experience that lead them to the path uniquely for them.

So what should you do to get what they’ve got?

Be you. Find your passion. Find your niche. Keep trying until you find out what your perfect business is.

Then other people will be asking of YOU – “What has she got that I haven’t got?”

LOL, the Smurfs was my and my sisters' fav cartoon when we were around 12 yo!

Anyway, I really appreciate and agree with that thought. I recently saw a video where the speaker said that he'd lost more money in PPC than in the stock market–because his heart wasn't in it! If what you're doing feels like constant drudgery, and the only reason you're doing it is b/c it helped somebody else make millions, you're unlikely to succeed–at least to the extent of the “guru”–and will be miserable during the whole process.

I fully believe in Thoreau's statement, “Do what you love, and the money will follow.” And what that requires more than anything is COMMITMENT and PATIENCE.

Such important points about Commitment and Patience Emily! I'm currently listening to Think & Grow Rich on audio (finally!) and it's just confirming that point at well.

Excellent post Angela! Sometimes it just takes patience and “sticking to your knitting” for a time before you can realize the benefits of your hard work. You shared similar feedback with me today during our lunch and I really appreciate that!

Oh I love that phrase 'sticking to your knitting'! never heard it before. Of course I never did literally stick to my knitting and ended up with a half-finished knitted sweater – haha!
