As the year is drawing closer to completion many people are thinking about their business and personal goals for the new year. I know for myself I’ve spent a lot of time working on personal growth in 2009. That includes plenty of goal setting, planning and plotting.
I’m currently listening to the audio version of Think and Grow Rich. One of the biggest points I’m getting from the book is how important it is to set your goal and infuse it into your mind and thoughts.
Get Specific When Setting Goals
In the book, the author talks about setting a goal that is a specific amount of money, setting a time limit to achieve that money, the means by which you’ll achieve it as well as any specific details in your plan to achieve this goal. It is suggested you write the goal down on paper and then say it out loud to yourself both morning and night.
I especially like reading my goal to myself at night because I feel like I’m giving my brain a challenge that it goes to work on overnight while I’m sleeping. I often wake up with new ideas for my business and it’s a great way to have a clear focus on where I’m heading with my business.
Here’s my goal:
“I, Angela Wills, will have in my possession $37,800 by December 31st, 2010. I will gain this income through affiliate marketing by promoting 10-20 key products and approximately 100 other products through blogging, article marketing and email marketing.”
I know $37,800 doesn’t seem like a lot but my current affiliate marketing income can range anywhere from $50-$300/month at the moment so I’d be making a huge jump by achieving this goal!
Another way this type of goal setting has been presented over the years is using the acronym S.M.A.R.T:
Setting SMART Goals
S – specific
M – measurable
A – achievable
R – realistic
T – time oriented
When setting goals for yourself, think of the lifestyle you want those goals to help you achieve. Also think of what you really want and not what other people may have you believe you want.
Try this exercise for just one month. Write down your SMART goals and read them aloud to yourself morning and night. I’d be willing to bet you’ll be so excited about your goal and the new ideas this method will bring you that you’ll continue throughout the entire year.
