Why I Won’t JV With You.

I got this letter the other day and it’s a good example of what just gets a big ol’ delete without even a click.

Don’t ever do this ok?

So who would I JV with?

Well, honestly, I don’t promote a whole lot of stuff through affiliate marketing because:

  1. I don’t want my list to think I’m just promoting to make a buck, and I don’t want to just promote to make a buck.
  2. I am very strict about what I promote and I want to check it out first, get results and then report back to my list and subscribers.
  3. I believe too many choices leads to information overload and overwhelm. I want to give my readers only the information they need to move forward with success.

So what will get my attention as a potential JV affiliate partner?

  • If you send me an email with access to your product. The best way is a coupon code that makes me go through your order process so I can review that too.
  • If I know you or have already bought your products and you produce proven, quality stuff.

There’s no way I’m going to promote a product launch from someone I don’t know promoting a product I’ve never heard of. I care about my list and my business way too much to do that!

That’s it, pretty simple.

  1. It cracks me up when I get these emails. JV, really? Why not just say… PROMOTE ME!

The basis for the “What’s In It For Me?” is that I have the privilege of earning commission by promoting them… well that’s nothing special.

My jaw would drop if I got one of these copy and paste emails that said… “and if you promote my launch I would be more than happy to return the favor and promote a product of yours where I would earn a commission as well.

Hey Scott! Yea I guess it’s part of the business but I get annoyed reading these type of emails. One day I suppose I’ll have a VA filter through them but I do love getting emails.

Oh and on a different topic guess what? I’m just about to head out in this crazy heat for a bike ride because – crazy or committed? lol

  2. Ha, Ha, HA.

I always love your take on life. Its so nice to see somebody who is realy and not fake.

I get those all the time and I just send them to the spam filter.

    Thanks
    Charles Kirkland

P.S. Will you promote ME!!!! I love your emails and blog. Keep up the good work.

hehe – well you know you have a much great chance of getting promoted because you actually READ my stuff and not just the FIRST line of my website, lol!

Help a newbie out and explain the code “JV.” In the circles I travel JV is Junior Varsity and Junior Volunteer. What does JV mean in the online marketing/affiliate world? Thanks! And great post.

Hi Bee – JV is code for Joint Venture.

The person who sent me didn’t actually write JV but it’s just the ‘vibe’ I got from this email. Often JV to me is a bit of a sleezy term because too many internet marketers use it to represent those product launches where everybody gets the same emails about the next fantabulous product (roll eyes).

Hey, Angela, I love your direct approach! Now that I’m also getting a little more known on the internet, I get these JV promotions too. Delete, Delete, Delete – it really is surprising that anyone thinks they can find Joint Venture partners that way, but there must be some people who will respond, unfortunately.
That’s right, Scott! – “and if you promote my launch I would be more than happy to return the favor and promote a product of yours where I would earn a commission as well.”….. that would be nice.
Luckily we have found communities and products that we do believe in and can promote with complete confidence.
It’s great knowing you, Angela, – you tell it like it is!!

Thank you so much Diana! So good to hear from you.

Yes I think there really are ‘communities’ on the net where certain people with similar values and ethics gather together. It’s great but I also do like to venture out and check out new groups so I’m open to partnerships and promotions – just don’t act like you’re doing me a favor when you’re asking one of me.

  5. Hi Angela,

I agree there are so many hyped up launches out there it’s crazy…but if the object of the game is simply to make a quick buck and not really help people with your product or service, then those customers will only be 1 time customers. I know you have the philosophy, as I do, that we are in this for “long-term” relationship building with our customers/clients and also we want to be certain it is a win/win for both.

    Love your blog!

Thanks for your comment Michelle. Yes it’s so important to me and I know to you to build that long term relationship and really it’s so much more fullfilling than I can even imagine just making a quick buck would be.

Sounds like what they’re marketing is more an affiliate deal… at best. Hardly a joint venture, at least as I would define it. And anyway, promoting one of these hyped-up launches is a good way to make your list consider you spam. There’s nothing worse than getting a nearly identical email from like, every IM guru at the same time, all telling you to buy their good friend “so and so’s” new product.

Right – and it’s too bad that you can’t say ‘my friend’ no-a-days online without someone thinking your full of it.

As I’m sure many of us do, I actually do have online friends and people I’ve met in person who I hold in very high regard but I hold off on using the term ‘friend’ because I think it instantly raises questions (are they REALLY your friend or are they PAYING you to be their friend – commissions).

I sometimes use the term with my own email list and on this blog because I know the main readership knows me enough to know when I say ‘friend’, I mean ‘friend’.

  7. I like these almost as much as I like the SEO ones from my website contact page. I can help you get noticed on search engines – Really? Isn’t that how you found me? I guess since you found me, I’m doing ok with my SEO – thanks!

    Hi Angela:

Your blog is terrific. I once had an “offer” that appeared to be a Joint Venture for a product that was compatible to mine. The product looked good so I agreed to add her link to my etsy shop. What happened next surprised me. She sent me to an affiliate marketer who wanted to market me for a fee. The emails kept coming from both parties and I kept emphatically telling them that I was not interested. I was only interested in linking her product to mine, period. Never heard from either of them again. Thanks for your blog and the opportunity to give a shout out once in a while.
