Why I Won’t JV With You.

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

I got this letter the other day and it’s a good example of what just gets a big ol’ delete without even a click.

Don’t ever do this ok?

So who would I JV with?

Well, honestly, I don’t promote a whole lot of stuff through affiliate marketing because:

  1. I don’t want my list to think I’m just promoting to make a buck, and I don’t want to just promote to make a buck.
  2. I am very strict about what I promote and I want to check it out first, get results and then report back to my list and subscribers.
  3. I believe too many choices leads to information overload and overwhelm. I want to give my readers only the information they need to move forward with success.

So what will get my attention as a potential JV affiliate partner?

  • If you send me an email with access to your product. The best way is a coupon code that makes me go through your order process so I can review that too.
  • If I know you or have already bought your products and you produce proven, quality stuff.

There’s no way I’m going to promote a product launch from someone I don’t know promoting a product I’ve never heard of. I care about my list and my business way too much to do that!

That’s it, pretty simple.

Making Sales: Web Content & Calls to Action

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Recently I had a client ask me to show her how to create calls to action within her content. You see she was sending me tons of articles to post on her website filled with excellent information but they had no purpose.

Content without a purpose is a true waste.

It’s a waste of time, money and effort.

You MUST lead your visitor to the next step and YES that means tell them exactly what to do with words like:

  • go here
  • click this link to..
  • get this now at…
  • sign up for x by clicking below…

Web Content Writing and Optimization Increase Business Sales

There is no exact formula that I can tell you.

This is all about creating a flow through your site that leads your visitors to a specific end result.  Not every call to action NEEDS to link to a buy now but you should always tell them what to do next. Other calls to action:

  • sign up for the newsletter
  • read more posts like this (I wouldn’t use this too much)
  • get the free sample
  • sign up for the free trial
  • check out the benefits
  • read the review
  • etc, etc, etc

Sure you can add a ton of content and wait for sales – but that’s not gonna just happen!

Think of it like this: If you had 500 TV stations but no TV GUIDE would you really spend your time flipping through those stations to find what you wanted? Most people wouldn’t have the patience and they’d probably just go read a book or do something else.

You also have to realize there are two main types of content:

  • Informative
  • Commercial

Informative web content answers a question the reader has. It gives quality info. It should lead to a next step but most often doesn’t lead to a direct sale. An example might be if someone were looking for information on how to live gluten-free. They may not want to buy anything. If there was good information on how to live gluten-free, they’ll take it and leave if there is no call to action. But – what if you told them you would give them some awesome gluten-free recepies – all they had to do was sign up below. Then you’d have their attention and you could repeatedly contact them – you’d send them good receipes but you’d also send links to where they would buy special gluten-free ingredients (with your affiliate link embedded!)

Commercial articles are the money articles. These are the articles for people who are ready to buy. For example that same person on a gluten-free diet may be looking for specialty foods to buy online. So they type words into the search engines that help them find what they are looking for. Maybe they want to know ‘where to buy gluten-free specialty foods’. So in response you write a commercial article that is informative and leads them to a specific place where they can find exactly what they are looking for and you can make a commission.

[credit must go to Lynn Terry here for the categories of informative vs commercial articles/posts]

It’s really important that when you craft each article you decide what it’s purpose is. Creating articles just to populate your website is NOT an affiliate marketing plan.

You also need to watch your website tracking.

You need calls to action but they’re not going to get anyone to buy if you don’t have enough visitors. To get good search engine rankings of you ‘money pages’ (those commercial posts) you’ll also need incoming links to the specific pages.

Social media is a start but you can get links from many websites and you’ll want to make sure you have a link building plan and are continually building links to the pages you want to rank well.

Here are some examples of calls to action:

Basically what it comes down to is advertising. A call to action is an ad within your content. But if it’s a highly relevant ad then your readers will happily check out what you are suggesting.

Other tips:

  1. You can simply use hyperlinks (that is links on words like this: affiliate marketing) on words that will grab people’s curiosity or tell them more about a product, topic, etc.
  2. One call to action is not always enough. You may want to tell them, give them more information and then tell them again within the same page.
  3. Always, always, always match the content perfectly to the offer. This is really key. Relevant offers make sales. You’re not out to change someone’s mind. You’re out to meet them where they’re at and provide them with what they’re looking for.
  4. Use internal links to pull people through your own website. Link to relevant pages when it’s appropriate.

So that’s how write and optimize your web content to make sales online. There’s no one sweeping formula here. The key is to create content that fits fantastic-ly with your readers and provides them with the further resources they need – be it a product, a report, a newsletter or whatever.

Home Based Business Lifestyle Planning

Friday, February 26th, 2010

People who start home-based businesses come from all kinds of backgrounds.

Some were professionals in the ‘corporate’ world, some were moms who were looking for a little extra cash, some were people who never got a ‘job’ because they wanted to be entrepreneurs and some where anywhere in between.

Because of the varied experiences some people excel at one thing while others seriously struggle.

One of the biggest struggles when building a home-based business is not letting it overrun your life.

Home-Based Business Lifestyle Planning

Think back to when you started your business – why did you do it?

Was it to have more free time?

Was it to have more money and opportunity?

Was it to spend more time with your little ones and family?

I know for me I wanted all of those things. The main driving reason, however, was being able to be flexible and free to spend the time with my son I thought he needed from his mom as he developed in the early years of life.

Choosing Your Activities to Fit Your Business Lifestyle

We get caught up in our businesses, invest. We become emotionally attached and even obsessed. It’s so important to recognize that early and address it.

For me, I became a burnt out, stressed out, overworked virtual assistant who had nothing resembling the ideal home-based business she had imagined. I let it get out of control and I didn’t pick a business model that really fit with my desired outcome.

What Fits? What Must Go?

At the point where I knew I needed a change to make the lifestyle I wanted happen I had to make a decision on what I wanted to do in my own business. I saw four main options based on my experience and interests:

1. Service-Based Business: This is where I was clearly getting into trouble but I wasn’t entirely convinced I couldn’t figure out how to do it better. A service based business is a lifestyle of responding to requests that often need fast attention. It also means more communication with clients and being able to switch your attention between many projects.

2. Information Product Business: While I did test out this model for me it is something I choose to put off for now. As an information product business owner you have a responsibility to customers to be available for customer service and support, something I’m not looking to add to my lifestyle at the moment.

3. Affiliate Marketing Business: An affiliate marketer lifestyle was definitely the most attractive to me. While you can work now/get paid later as an information business owner I liked that you could do that with affiliate marketing without having to also provide customer support/product updates/etc.

4. Coaching and Teaching Business: The lifestyle that comes along with coaching or teaching is really up to the person running the business. A coaching business could be very time demanding if all work time is spent on the phone or it could be quite flexible if it’s group coaching at the owner’s determined times.

What I decided out of these four choices was a combination of both affiliate marketing and services. My goal is to absolutely become a full time affiliate marketer but I’m definitely not there yet. So in the meantime I am supplementing my income with services by working with clients who I absolutely adore working with – that way it’s a win-win!

I’m not saying that all four options above are the only business choices for you. There are plenty of other business models.

The most important thing is that you choose you business model based on the lifestyle you want and then you protect it like hell to make it exactly what you want to be.

Should you work hard? Of course!

Nothing is going to replace the initial phase of hard work you must to do reach blast off in your business BUT there’s no point in blasting off to the MOON when you want to go to MARS, right?

The other day I got a great question from Marya of Sales Copywriting about affiliate marketing guilt and I asked her if I could share my answers here.

It’s about making affiliate marketing referrals and experiencing guilt as a result, instead of just using a straight, non-affiliate link.

I think you’ll find this conversation helpful if you yourself experience any affiliate marketing referral guilt.

Question: Affiliate Guilt

“How do you get over affiliate guilt?”

“Every time I try affiliate marketing, I always feel as if I’m doing something sneaky. My *head* tells me that it’s totally ethical, but I also feel like I should be recommending things with no strings attached. (In fact, half the time, I don’t use my affiliate links at all!)

It’s a really weird psychological thing… And I think when one is not comfortable with affiliate marketing, it shows in one’s articles and posts. I’m terribly reserved and British about it – and I wish I could get past that, because I *really* need to make a secondary passive income!

Any thoughts?”

Short Answer: Get Over It ;)

Don’t Let Affiliate Marketing Referral Guilt Stop You

Angela’s Reply:
That’s not a dumb question AT ALL and I bet there are a lot of people wondering the same thing.

I think you sometimes read the guru marketers and respected marketers say that they’re recommending something and NOT using their affiliate link like there is something wrong with using it. I think that gives affiliates a bad name even though they’re trying to show how credible they are by saying “look I’m telling you something good and I’m not even getting paid for it”.

But I look at it this way: If your potential customers, clients, subscribers, readers etc trust you then they trust you, period. I don’t feel I need to prove my worth by not using an affiliate link. I feel if I run my business ethically and honestly and stress my intentions then my following can decide if they want to believe me or not. It’s kind of out of my hands after that point. I don’t worry if they feel tricked because I clearly am providing a service by saving them the time of researching something for themselves. If they resent the fact that I’m making money from all the work, effort and experience I have then they’re not someone I want to do business with anyway.

How do I recommend you change your mindset about affiliate marketing being unethical? Write yourself up a list of why you think it’s NOT unethical. Here’s something to get you started:

- You are providing a service to the customer by researching and recommending products.
- You are providing a service to the company by connecting them with their idea customers.
- You are honestly and ethically doing your due dilligence in recommending only high quality stuff.
- You accept and openly correct any issues you find with anything you recommend.
- You have specific experience and skills that took you years to develop and in sharing that you are saving your affiliate customers time AND money.

Another thing to remember – you are NOT the same as the sleezy internet marketers who promote crap just for a buck. You are someone with ethics and honesty and over time will develop a following who respects and admires that in you.

I hope that helps :)

p.s. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with my advice? I’d love to hear all opinions on this topic and if you’re experienced your own affiliate marketing guilt!

Why I Finally Choose an Affiliate Marketing Career

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

I’m not sure how long you’ve been reading my blog. If you’re a new reader – welcome!

If you’ve been following my escapades for a while (thank you!) then you’ll know this is not my first business. I have been a soapmaker, a securities salesperson, an information marketer, a virtual assistant, an affiliate manager, a candle salesperson and a few more.

The common thread about every single one of those businesses is that I never considered the lifestyle I wanted when I choose them.

Why I Choose Affiliate Marketing

affiliate-marketingAfter many years of experimenting with various businesses I got a real good idea of what I DIDN’T want from a business. I developed a uniquely personal set of things I did want from a business that were important to me and with each new business I got closer to that goal:

- Travel not required
- Freedom built in
- Work now, profit now AND later
- No need to build a team
- Low expenses
- Unlimited opportunity

Affiliate marketing satisfies all of these requirements. I recently read on Rosalind Gardner’s blog (one of my affiliate marketing hero’s!) that she just turned 50. I’m 33. It’s so exciting for me to think where I will be in 17 years from the efforts of my affiliate marketing. I don’t know when Rosalind started her business but I know that affiliate marketing is something that’s effort is compounded as time goes by.

I remember when I first explained affiliate marketing to my father. He related it to an insurance salesman. The insurance salesman gets a commission from every insurance policy he sells. In the beginning it might be tough but over the years the results of that effort add up. The same is true for affiliate marketing, especially when you choose to promote affiliate programs with residual commissions and long-term customers.

Affiliate marketing fits the lifestyle I want to have. I mean who doesn’t want to have time freedom and commissions coming in long after the work has been completed? Yes the results are awesome but also the means to achieve those results are very attractive to me as well.

How Do I Plan to Successfully Make Affiliate Sales?

Sure, the results of many businesses sound great but it’s the work itself and your ability to get ‘er done that really determine success. I’m sure the work I need to put in to be a successful and even a ‘super’ affiliate are something I will enjoy and continue with long-term.

Here are just some of the things I’d consider important to long term affiliate marketing success:
1. Persistence – You gotta do more than the average affiliate and that means being persistent and consistent in your marketing efforts.
2. Communication – I’ll be communicating with my readers here through the blog, in my email messages, through article marketing, through my podcast and more all in an effort to provide the best help I can to those who are on the same path I am in their work at home careers.
3. Planning – Oh yes I’m getting so much better at planning. I’ve listed out all the programs I’d like to promote here on Marketers Mojo and I’ve also started a Blogging, Email Marketing & Article Marketing Calendar to plan out my content and promotions (thanks to the advice and challenges over at Lynn Terry’s Elite Membership)

Are You Still Deciding?

So I guess my question to you right now is why did you choose the business you are doing right now? Did you think about it or just dive in? Is it really suiting your lifestyle needs?

Ok so that’s three questions.

Maybe you haven’t decided on a business yet. If not, good! Now you have the opportunity to really design a business that fits a lifestyle goal that will bring you what you truly want.

I know thinking about the lifestyle my current efforts will support keeps me motivated and excited about the little details that I need to take daily to get to my bigger goals!

New FTC Laws to Change the Face of Internet Marketing?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Print30 Printable PDF Version

I’m sure you’ve noticed there’s a lot buzz about the new FTC laws coming into affect starting at the end of this year. These laws may affect many of us online marketers and we should at the very least get familiar with what it’s all about.

The basic idea behind the new updates relates to advertising, product endorsement and testimonials – requiring the presentation of what is being represented is accurate, true and not deceitful.

You can find the official 81 page goverment pdf doc here.

ftc-updatesOver the last week or so I’ve been collecting opinions and blog posts on how this will affect my business, your business and the face of internet marketing.

Let me just give you a summary of what I got out of everything I read.

Today is Day 2 of the Super Affiliate Challenge (click that link if you want to see what it’s all about).

Affiliate Marketing – In simplest terms it means marketing products for other people or companies on the internet and getting paid once a sale is made.

There are different types of affiliate programs that can also include getting paid when you send a lead, click or even a phone call to the merchant.

Every day for the next 13 days I will be going through a Chapter of the Super Affiliate Handbook and giving you my insights into what I’ve learned and what action I’ve taken.

Today’s Chapter is Affiliate Marketing Basics

This chapter covers in detail the benefits of working as an affiliate marketer. It is literally one of the quickest ways to start making a real profit on the internet and one of the easiest.

Now, when I say ‘easy’ I don’t mean as in you don’t have to work (not at all).

It’s still work but there are just a lot LESS pieces of the puzzle to put together in affiliate marketing versus creating your own product or starting up your own service based business. Read More→
