No, I Don’t Want to Buy Your 100k List!

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Wondering if I have sucker written on my forehead this week.

After the last post you enjoyed I thought you’d like this one too. Came to my inbox asking me if I’d buy a whole bunch of email lists from them if I’m in need of increasing my ROI.

Of course I need to increase my ROI but I certainly don’t want to buy your massive lists – that’s spam!

Have a peek if you like. Here’s what I can buy:

I know most of you know this but let me tell you why this is a really bad idea:

1. You need to legally get permission from the user to add them to any type of automated email list. I don’t have their permission.

2. Even IF these users somehow gave a big blanket permission statement saying that anyone can send them any crap they feel like that still sucks because they’re going to be so inundated with crap my GOOD stuff would just get totally lost in the shuffle. That would be a shame and being associated with a bunch of people promoting like hell is not what I want my business to represent.

3. Numbers lie. I have a list of just over 1000 right now. I have built that list and cared for that list and made mistakes but they’re still here – you’re still here. That’s because you know I’m real, we have built up trust and a relationship. To that list of 100k or whatever I am nobody and my response with them if I ever wanted to email them would be a teeny tiny itsy bittsy portion of what I can get from a list that (hopefully) loves me!

So there you go – buying email lists is a bad business investment. People need to make a concious decision to get the information from you or it will be completely worthless to them.

You can’t buy attention – you must earn it.

Embed YouTube Videos In Gmail Emails

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Man I’ve been seriously, seriously slack on my blog posting here for a few weeks now!

I honestly don’t know what happened. I’ve just not felt like posting. Maybe because I’ve been pretty busy promoting, preparing and welcoming some awesome students to my Website Design Mojo program which started yesterday. Maybe because I just needed a blogging rest.

But whatever, I’m back! I’ll be back later with more thoughtfull and action-provoking posts but for now I wanted to show you something real cool.

If you are sending emails to people who use Gmail (I do, I do!) then you can use it to embed youtube videos right into your emails. I’m assuming this works just for people who are receiving with Gmail but I haven’t looked into that part. But I know that there are enough business people using Gmail on a regular basis for me to take note!

I see this being a very useful way to grab a little more attention. You could use it to:
- Promote a newsletter.
- Promote a product.
- Show a demo.

I added my Dear Guru, Dear Guru video to my email signature and sent myself a test. Here’s what it looks like:

So when the reader clicks on the video play button it opens up and plays right in Gmail – cool, cool stuff!

Gotta love Google!

p.s. You know that Website Design coaching program I’ve been rambling about? Well it *almost* sold out on it’s first go-around! There are already 6 people on the waiting list for my next session. So if you want to learn how to make a WordPress website I suggest you check it out and sign up for the webinar to get the recording and get on the email notification list. Targeted Email Marketing Lists

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I just did some research before writing this post about found a whole bunch of results for people who are looking to buy email lists. Spammers building huge, useless, annoyed and angry lists of people who don’t want to buy from them.

That’s not what smart marketers do.

Years ago I got a job at Consumer’s Distributing (Canadians, remember that place?). Well I didn’t actually work for the company, I worked for one of those in-store credit card companies where I jumped on people (not literally) as soon as they walked in the door. My job was simple – get them to sign up for a credit card.

So people are coming in the door expecting to get their product order but instead are getting hounded to get another credit card. Sure it might ’seem’ targeted because they were coming in to buy something but in reality they knew what they were looking for when they came in the door and it wasn’t a credit card.

Targeted Email Marketing – It Works

That’s why targeting is so important whether it be online or offline. Sure you can have the ‘hunter’ mentality if you like and work like hell to convert a percentage of the untargeted people into buyers – that’s the hard way. The easier way is to find people who are looking for something very specific and then give it to them.

One of the best ways to reach your target market online is to provide them with information via email. No matter what you may have heard about the latest and greatest social media methods, email marketing is NOT dead. In fact, marketing with email is still one of the best ways to have the full attention of the people you’re serving.

My message here at Marketers Mojo is all about using the technology of the internet to run your business smoother and help you create true freedom. That’s why I’ve created a number of targeted email marketing lists on various topics, including:

Each list has a specific topic and that is certainly by design. By having highly targeted lists I can offer quality targeted information and when I make offers they can also be very targeted.

Another important thing to remember when you have multiple targeted email lists is that they are all running 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. That means that I can be constantly marketing my business through multiple channels to hundreds or even thousands of people all at once.

By the way, if you haven’t started your email marketing list yet I highly recommend Aweber. As a friend of mine recently said you might as well start with Aweber because you’ll end up there anyway (they’re the best!). You can start with a free trial for just $1:

Automatic Email Responders – Passive Income Key

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I’m working on not working so hard.

It’s hard work.

You know?

It almost seems easy to get caught up in all the stuff and end up wasting so much time.

One of the things I’ve been working hard to build up is passive income. There are many ways to do that but today I want to share with you one of my absolute favorite ways – automatic email responders or autoresponders.

An autoresponder is an email that goes out automatically in response to someone signing up to my list.

I currently have nine email lists and every one of them is set up with a series of follow-up autoresponder emails.

My goal with each autoresponder series is to provide excellent quality information that makes a difference in the lives of those who read and put them to use. I’m talking quality here, on auto-pilot.

Here’s a screen shot of my Aweber account and the current lists I have set up:

My goal is to have a minimum of THREE YEARS of weekly emails set up in each of these lists (except my main list which gets a monthly autoresponder). That means I will have 156 automatic emails per list.

You can see this is work. And it takes work to get passive income. But the results of that work is going to pay off for many years to come – I really like that.

Angela Wills

p.s. If you don’t yet have a program that can host your email autoresponders I highly recommend Aweber. See it here and get a 30 day trial for only $1:

How I Boosted My Email Address Sign Ups by 500%

    Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

While looking for some advice at the Elite Forum over at Self Starters Weekly Tips a few weeks ago I got a tip from a few of them members, including owner Lynn Terry, that helped me increase my email list sign ups by 500%.

Here’s How I Got More Email Address Sign Ups

To start, let me show you what the sign up form looked like before I made any changes:

    optin1

Right there you see I had a boring old message and no good opt-in freebie. It was suggested to me that I test out that form and see if I could increase the sign ups.

Here’s the new form I created along with a special report that really speaks to the message of this website:

    optin2

Email Sign Ups Increased by 500%

After I changed forms my sign ups have increased from 0.5% to 2.5%, that’s a 500% increase.

Here’s the screen shot from Aweber:

    sidebar

You can see from the screen shot that there were:
    2 submissions before
    18 submissions after

    1260 displays before
    1860 displays after

    0.5% conversion before
    2.5% conversion after

Why did it work? Well obviously just asking you to hand over your email and get some ‘good stuff’ wasn’t enough. I know there are opportunities everywhere to sign up for email lists – I had to let my readers know WHY mine was different, how they were going to get extra benefit and WHY they should focus their attention on the emails I send over anyone else.

The ‘after’ signup form just does that better.

This is one of the things I really love about Aweber. It is so easy to track stats. All I do is go in and read them. Aweber handles the tracking. Stats are important but most of the time we just don’t have enough hours in the day to do the stuff we already need to do, that’s why I believe having automatic stat tracking like this is just another way to work less, make more, love your business, love your life!

    Angela Wills
    Angela Wills

p.s. If you don’t already have an email list I highly recommend (and love) Aweber. It’s got a reputation for just being the top in the industry for service, use-ability and deliver-ability. Here’s the link: Aweber (that’s my affiliate link!)

How I Made Money… Sending Emails

    Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

This a post in the series of How I Made Money posts. Click on the links below this post to view more on the How I Made Money topic.

Sending out emails is possibly one of the most important tasks you’ll do to make money on the internet.

iStock_000003850016XSmallSome people might suggest that email marketing is dead and that social media is the new way to connect. I couldn’t disagree more.

Social Media has it’s purpose but it in no way replaces the valuable asset of focused attention you gain when you gain someone’s email address for marketing purposes.

Wow, looking back over the years I’ve probably collected thousands of email address for my businesses. It’s important to note here that they were all collected properly through email opt-in. This means that everyone signed up through a web form to get email from me.

    Building an Email Opt-in List

Right now there are 365 people on my email list. To some people that may seem like very little. To some it might seem like a lot.

Look, I’m being totally honest about where I’m at right now and some people who’ve followed me for years might be wondering right now why the heck my list is so small!

Well, the reason is I’ve switched gears, switched business and switched email service providers so many times that my lists didn’t always move with me. I’m not sorry about this. It has taught me what I really want from my business and it has allowed me to have a list of people who are VERY interested in what I have to say. Some of the people on my little list have actually followed me from place to place – those are loyal people to my message!

And of course I now use Aweber. It took me a few years of experimenting and trying out other lists before I really settled into Aweber, but now I am a customer for life.

How have I made money with my Email List?

Well you might be starting to see a pattern here:

    • Selling My Services
    • Selling My Products
    • Promoting Other People’s Products (affiliate marketing)

What I made the most on depends on what I focused my time on.

I was just on Twitter a few minutes ago and came across a quote that sums it all up:

    move-forward

You can sit there thinking about how difficult this internet marketing or even email marketing is and be stalled or stagnant with fear and inability to act or you can just get it done!

Email marketing is simply another means to be you, build your relationships and get your message heard. Use it and grow your business, ok?

    Angela Wills

p.s. Like I said I’ve built email lists many times over during the last several years and I’ve also done the same for clients. So if you want some tips and also some of advice on what to avoid check out the free Marketers Mojo mini-course: 7 Ways to Get More Email Subscribers

    Try AWeber Email Marketing Risk-Free

Over the years I have built email lists in many different email marketing software programs. Some were free, some were part of a shopping carts system, and some were low priced. Once I tried Aweber, however, nothing else really compared.

Now if you’re not sure what I mean by email marketing software program (also known as email service provider) it’s a program that allows you to collect emails and then send them out in bulk.

Why not do that from your own Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo or whatever account you use?

free-email-marketing-software There are a few good reasons why it’s a very bad idea not to use a well established email service provider:

    1. Sending emails in bulk without having seriously good relationships with all the companies who take those emails in can get your email address blacklisted. A blacklisted email address means your messages won’t go through – they’ll get blocked. Read More→

Why Aren’t People Getting My Emails??

    Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

002_19Are you worried people are not getting your emails?

I’ve set up a lot of online shopping carts and email marketing systems for clients and I often get the question: “People say they’re not getting my emails – Why Not?”

The first thing I like to make sure my clients understand is that we can’t control who gets our emails, we can only do our best to follow the rules and laws (aka Can-Spam Law) to make sure we get the best chance of having our emails delivered.

If you’re like most people I see with email lists, you can increase your subscriber rate significantly, right now, without putting any extra effort in to get more traffic to your website.
    computerhead
What do I mean by zero extra traffic? Well, if you have traffic to your website right now and you do currently get newsletter sign ups there are things you can do to increase the conversions so the same traffic comes, but more people end up on your email list! Sound good?

Ok – here are 2 Simple Tips you can do right now:

    1. Fix your Headline and copy

I see a LOT of newsletter lists asking me to sign up by saying ‘Sign up for my Newsletter’ or ‘Sign up for the XX Newsletter’. Boy does that sound boring! Why on earth would I give you my very limited attention and valuable email address when you haven’t even told me what’s so good about what you’ve got to say?

Here’s a really great tip for creating compelling headlines I learned from Perry Marshall in his Guide to Google Adwords book:
    - Go to Magazines.com and do a search for Cosmo Magazine. This might sound weird but Cosmo is a huge magazine that spends a fortune on getting the copy just right. You can look at other magazines too of course. Use the headlines on the cover of that magazine to help inspire ideas for YOUR headline. Maybe reword something to fit your niche.

    Here’s an example:
Right now I just found the headline – 8 New Love Truths You Must Learn
Let’s relate that to our current topic – 8 Ways to Get More EMail Subscribers You Must Learn Now

See – more compelling right? So use that on your newsletter headline, like:
Sign up now to receive our weekly tips, advice and info on Email Marketing. As a special bonus, you’ll get the free report titled ’8 Ways to Get More Email Subscribers You Must Learn Now’.

That was a really quick example that I did just this minute, I’m sure with some extra time you could come up with something REALLY compelling to increase your subscribers and tell them the real value in what you offer.

    2. Add a Complementary Image

Add an image to your offer. People like to SEE what they are getting and there are plenty of skimmers out there who won’t read all of your newsletter offer so you’ll want to make it appealing with a graphic that fits.

The graphic might be a representation of what people will achieve through your newsletter – example: more time and freedom.
The graphic might also be a digital representation of the newsletter itself or the bonus – example: you have an ecover of a magazine or a graphic of a free CD to represent a free audio you’re giving away

Let me give you a real life example:

I had a client who asked me to fix up her email opt-in copy for her newsletter.

She had great traffic but not terribly impressive sign-ups to her email list. After doing the tweaks I mention above we increased her email opt-ins (that’s subscribes) by 558%! That’s huge. So now almost 6 times MORE people are signing up for her newsletter with just a tweak that literally took no more than an hour of my time.

Creating an Email List For Websites

    Friday, April 17th, 2009

Creating an Email List For Websites

There are many people who don’t start a mailing list in the beginning of their home business online presence because they feel they don’t have enough to share with a list. This is a big mistake! Email marketing is NOT dead and you need to be building your email list, now.

    email marketing

You don’t have to start by sending out a huge newsletter every week, but you do have to start building that list.

What you send to your email list will really depend on your market, and what they have subscribed to receive. You could do any number of the following:

    * A monthly, weekly or bi-weekly html (colors, pictures) newsletter
    * A monthly, weekly or bi-weekly text-based email
    * An ecourse
    * A daily, weekly, or monthly tips list
    * A series of autoresponder messages
    * Follow-up messages to customers or clients
    * A list announcing upcoming events such as teleseminars

If you treat your email lists right they will become loyal followers, and when you have an offer to make them they will be there to listen to what you have to say.

So, How Do You Build Your Email List?

Before you can start sending messages out to a list you need to have people subscribed.

The best way to build a list that you want to grow long term is to use a program that is built for sending out messages to those subscribed and also will help you comply with the Can-Spam legal requirements of sending out messages to large groups of people.

Two programs I use most often with my clients and are well-known as industry leaders are:

    Aweber & 1ShoppingCart

Signing up with either of these programs will allow you to easily set up your mailing list and start collecting names and emails that you can then start sending your email promotions out to.

    Getting Opt-ins

Once you have a program to handle your mailing list you will then need to set up a mailing list opt-in form that people will fill out in order to subscribe to your list.

You may want to offer subscribers a gift for signing up, like the one you’ll see in the offer I make on this site.

When people sign up for my newsletter they get a five great bonuses to help them build their business on the internet

    Confirmation Page

Once people fill out their name and email on an opt-in form you will likely need to have them confirm their opt-in so that you can confirm that they really did request the information and you are not spamming them.

The confirmation page is a page that you need to optimize. If you’ve offered a special report make sure that you let them know they need to confirm their subscription in order to get that report, or confirm in order to receive the information they requested.

You can make a special offer on the confirmation page, or send them back to your website to read articles. But since they’re on the page anyway, and they have to go somewhere YOU should be making a suggestion as to where they should go.

Now It’s Time To Send Out Emails

You’ve got subscribers, they’ve confirmed they want your information and now you’ve got to send them some valuable content!

A couple of things to really pay attention to when you send messages out your mailing list is your open rate and your click through rates.

    Open Rate

One of the biggest things that will affect your open rate is the title of your email message.

You want a subject line with the following qualities:

    * not too long – Long subjects get cut off in some email programs and a long subject line takes a chance at being ignored.
    * includes the name of recipient – Personalizing your email subject line helps catch the attention of the person you’re sending it to. Who doesn’t respond when you call out their name? This is the same with an email. When people see their name they want to know what you’re saying to them.
    * sounds personal – If the subject line sounds like it is a personal message to the person opening it, you have a greater chance of having it opened.
    * isn’t misleading – Don’t try to trick your readers into opening something by using a misleading subject line. Not only is it illegal through the Can-Spam act, it just turns your subscribers off in a big way. If they’re expecting one thing and open up an email to see another, you risk them not opening anything else you send them.

    Click Through Rates

Ok, you’ve gotten their attention and they’ve opened your email – but that’s only the first step! Now you need to have a call to action in each and every message you send.

Your call to action doesn’t (and shouldn’t!) have to be asking them to buy something. Maybe you want them to visit your website to read a great article you’ve written, or maybe they should go check out a new podcast you’ve uploaded, or download a free special report you’ve written (all of which will have their own calls to action within them).

Watch your click through rates and start paying attention to what works and what doesn’t for your market. If you have a large enough list you can do split-testing to test one message against another to see which has a better response. Sometimes the smallest things can make a big difference.

Your mailing list can be one of the biggest assets to your business so make sure you take care and don’t bombard them with spammy offers or just low quality information.
Take good care of that list and they will take good care of you for a very long time to come.

And make sure you start building it now!

Using Email As a Sales Tool

    Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Using Email As a Sales Tool
    Email Marketing

You’ve heard that using your email to sell products or services on the internet is THE thing to do but you have no idea where to start.

Using email as a sales tool doesn’t have to be complicated.

You need to connect with your audience no matter what tool you use. Email just allows you another way to do so. Some of the common reasons why business owners don’t use email marketing is because they (1) fear it will take up too much time or (2) don’t feel they have enough expertise to write a ‘newsletter’ or (3) feel that marketing through email is ‘spamming’.

Let’s address each of these issues:

    1. Too Much Time – This is a common issue that business owners face. They put off using email to make sales because they feel like it will take away from their other business activities and end up being a time drain.

Here’s the thing though: You email marketing really doesn’t need to be a fancy, high graphic email Newsletter.

    - You can offer quick weekly tips that take you 15 minutes each week to write.
    - You can have a special offers list where you tell people what you have for sale.
    - You can do a weekly article.
    - You can give short, quick updates on your business.
    - You can even set your email marketing on auto-pilot using autoresponders.

It’s your email list so you get to set the rules. Don’t let lack of time stop you! The amount of time you will save by having a responsive list to sell to will far outweigh the input of time in the beginning.

    2. Not an Expert – Some people believe they need to be a ‘guru’ or an expert to write emails that people will want to read. This is so untrue!

Many people want to learn from someone like them. Someone who remembers what it’s like to struggle, to learn the hard way and someone who’s willing to give the step-by-step information they need to move along that path.

Business success is a gradual growth and no one expects you to be an expert overnight. If you’ve been in business for a while you have great information to share and there are people out there waiting to hang on your every word.

Just get going, be honest and people will love you.

    3. Email Sales is Spamming – Yes we are overloaded with email and spam is a terrible issue. Does that mean you should concede to the spammers and not even try? NO WAY!

You can have an email list to sell to without selling like a spammer.

Provide great value, treat people the way you’d like to be treated, do good business and you have no worries about making people upset. The great thing about email marketing too is if you set your system up properly when people want to leave your list they can do so at the click of a button.

Five Ways to Boost Your Ezine Subscribers

    Friday, March 27th, 2009

Five Ways to Boost Your Ezine Subscribers

If you already have a newsletter and would like to get more people signing up to it (who doesn’t!?) there are some simple things you can do now to increase subscriptions and get more people signing up to your newsletter.

    1. Look at your sign up boxes – What do they say? Is the text appealing? Do you have an attractive graphic?

Your newsletter signup area should be like a mini-salespage. It should have a headline that is attention-getting and grabs people to pull them in and tell them the benefits of handing over their email address. Just putting up a form that says ‘fill out your name and email to be added to my list’ is NOT going to get you the most sign ups!

An example of a good headline might be “Sign Up Now to Get Your FREE Tips, Resources and Special Offers on X!”

You’ll also want to have some specific text below the sign up box that also describes what they will be getting. Bullet points work, highlighting, italics. Make it important and make it stand out.

You can also look at your ‘Submit’ button and see how you can create a greater call to action with this. You can use words like ‘Get my Free Subscription’ or ‘Sign Me up Now!’.

    2. Opt-in Sign up Placement – Where have you placed your sign up box on your website? Is it just on the main page of your site?

Your main page of your website may get a lot of traffic but what about the rest of the pages? If you only have your opt-in on the main page then you need to think about incorporating it in to the rest of the pages of your site since you will often get website visitors from the search engines who don’t find you through your main page. You don’t want to lose these people!

Another thing to consider is to place the opt-in sign up on other websites you have that are also in the same niche as your list.

    3. Test the Location of Your Opt-in – Where is your opt-in or sign up offer located?

Moving your opt-in location can make a big difference in the number of sign ups you receive. If you currently have your opt-in in the right sidebar of your site, try it on the left (assuming you have a left) or try it in the copy of your website. Test out what happens when you move it around and if you see an increase in subscribers you’ll know you’ve found a winning location.

    4. Use a Pop-up/Hover-ad -Yes these can be annoying to some people but they really do work. If you use a service like Aweber (which I highly recommend) then you can set the ads to pop in only once per visit or one per visitor so that people who are clicking around your site don’t need to keep closing your ad.

Test out a hover ad and see if that increases your conversions. Sometimes it can have a very big effect on the overall conversions but like I always say ‘It’s all just a guess, until you test’ ;)

    5. Host a Teleseminar – Now this task may not seem as easy as the others to set up, but once you have a system set up for hosting teleseminars can become part of your routine and be pretty easy to get going. Hosting a teleseminar allows people to get to know you better and creates more word of mouth about your business.

Of course you’ll also want to be looking at bringing more traffic to your website so more people see your email opt-in offer but

Aweber has an amazing deliver-ability rate, fantastic customer service and an excellent program – highly recommend. Check it out here: Email Marketing

    My Contact Form

    Friday, October 24th, 2008

Today’s free tool is a little service called ‘My Contact Form’.

The service allows you to add contact forms to your website, blog, or just about anywhere. I know there are other ways to get forms up like using scripts (I think?) but for those of us who are not that technically inclined (like me!) then this is a great option to get some nice looking forms pumped out quickly.

Some of you may know that I also have a small online based candle business. This is where I have use the My Contact Form service most often. I had a great form set up for when people were interested in the candle business, they would fill out the form with all their information, and I would send them out an info kid about the business.

    Some other uses:

    - Ask your customers a question

    - Use it as a website contact form instead of having your email

    - Feedback form

    - Request information form like I had on my candle business site

There is a free version of this that does show an ad when the visitor has finished filling out the form. If you want it to be ad-free the paid version is only $24.99 per year.

Let me know if you enjoy this!
