Automatic Email Responders – Passive Income Key

I’m working on not working so hard.

It’s hard work.

You know?

It almost seems easy to get caught up in all the stuff and end up wasting so much time.

One of the things I’ve been working hard to build up is passive income. There are many ways to do that but today I want to share with you one of my absolute favorite ways – automatic email responders or autoresponders.

An autoresponder is an email that goes out automatically in response to someone signing up to my list.

I currently have nine email lists and every one of them is set up with a series of follow-up autoresponder emails.

My goal with each autoresponder series is to provide excellent quality information that makes a difference in the lives of those who read and put them to use. I’m talking quality here, on auto-pilot.

My goal is to have a minimum of THREE YEARS of weekly emails set up in each of these lists (except my main list which gets a monthly autoresponder). That means I will have 156 automatic emails per list.

You can see this is work. And it takes work to get passive income. But the results of that work is going to pay off for many years to come – I really like that.

The issue of whether using PLR is ethical has come up for me as well. But the thing is, like Nicole says in the video, there is nothing wrong with getting HELP for your business.

If you are claiming you are writing articles you didn’t I think that could be an issue that could ruin your market’s trust in you but using PLR doesn’t have to cause that.

Buying good private label rights content and using it properly is just smart business! What I do with my own PLR is use it to compile courses or reports but I don’t claim authorship on them if I’m using the straight PLR. What I do more often is to use PLR as a starting point and then tweak it so much that it’s completely different once I’m done with it. That give your market something that comes original, from you.

How I Boosted My Email Address Sign Ups by 500%

While looking for some advice at the Elite Forum over at Self Starters Weekly Tips a few weeks ago I got a tip from a few of them members, including owner Lynn Terry, that helped me increase my email list sign ups by 500%.

Here’s How I Got More Email Address Sign Ups

To start, let me show you what the sign up form looked like before I made any changes:

Right there you see I had a boring old message and no good opt-in freebie. It was suggested to me that I test out that form and see if I could increase the sign ups.

Here’s the new form I created along with a special report that really speaks to the message of this website:

Email Sign Ups Increased by 500%

After I changed forms my sign ups have increased from 0.5% to 2.5%, that’s a 500% increase.

Here’s the screen shot from Aweber:

You can see from the screen shot that there were:
2 submissions before
18 submissions after

1260 displays before
1860 displays after

0.5% conversion before
2.5% conversion after

Why did it work? Well obviously just asking you to hand over your email and get some ‘good stuff’ wasn’t enough. I know there are opportunities everywhere to sign up for email lists – I had to let my readers know WHY mine was different, how they were going to get extra benefit and WHY they should focus their attention on the emails I send over anyone else.

The ‘after’ signup form just does that better.

This is one of the things I really love about Aweber. It is so easy to track stats. All I do is go in and read them. Aweber handles the tracking. Stats are important but most of the time we just don’t have enough hours in the day to do the stuff we already need to do, that’s why I believe having automatic stat tracking like this is just another way to work less, make more, love your business, love your life!

How I Made Money… Sending Emails

Sending out emails is possibly one of the most important tasks you’ll do to make money on the internet.

Some people might suggest that email marketing is dead and that social media is the new way to connect. I couldn’t disagree more.

Social Media has it’s purpose but it in no way replaces the valuable asset of focused attention you gain when you gain someone’s email address for marketing purposes.

Wow, looking back over the years I’ve probably collected thousands of email address for my businesses. It’s important to note here that they were all collected properly through email opt-in. This means that everyone signed up through a web form to get email from me.

Building an Email Opt-in List

Right now there are 365 people on my email list. To some people that may seem like very little. To some it might seem like a lot.

Look, I’m being totally honest about where I’m at right now and some people who’ve followed me for years might be wondering right now why the heck my list is so small!

Well, the reason is I’ve switched gears, switched business and switched email service providers so many times that my lists didn’t always move with me. I’m not sorry about this. It has taught me what I really want from my business and it has allowed me to have a list of people who are VERY interested in what I have to say. Some of the people on my little list have actually followed me from place to place – those are loyal people to my message!

And of course I now use Aweber. It took me a few years of experimenting and trying out other lists before I really settled into Aweber, but now I am a customer for life.

How have I made money with my Email List?

What I made the most on depends on what I focused my time on.

I was just on Twitter a few minutes ago and came across a quote that sums it all up:

Build Email Lists Without Getting More Traffic

More traffic is a great thing, for sure. But what if you could get more email subscribers without increasing your traffic?

That means you wouldn’t miss out on potential subscribers AND you could then increase your traffic knowing you’ll get the maximum subscribers possible. Nice, right?

How Do You Build Email Lists Without More Traffic?

What you need to do is optimize your opt-in form.

Location – Ideally, you should have your opt-in form on every page of your website so people can request to join at any time they feel ready. Don’t make the common mistake of just having an opt-in form on your main ‘index’ page of your site and nowhere else.

Copy – Make sure you have strong copy. Tell your readers exactly what they need to do and why they should give up their name and email to you. Make sure what you offer is going to be something they are actually interested in. This seems obvious but you truly want to try to understand what they are thinking and needing and make sure you get a perfect match.

Freebie – Offering a freebie is something to test. You might want to give away a great report, an audio or even access to a great video.

Images – A high quality, relevant image can go a long way to enticing potential subscribers to join your list.

Attractive Form – Having a well designed form that stands out can also help your sign up rate. Aweber just released a new feature that allows users to create highly professional looking forms with images and great designs in just a few clicks.

One of the most important things you can do while testing various ways to improve your form is keep track of your sign up rates. Doing this manually can be a big pain.

Over the years I have built email lists in many different email marketing software programs. Some were free, some were part of a shopping carts system, and some were low priced. Once I tried Aweber, however, nothing else really compared.

Now if you’re not sure what I mean by email marketing software program (also known as email service provider) it’s a program that allows you to collect emails and then send them out in bulk.

Why not do that from your own Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo or whatever account you use?

There are a few good reasons why it’s a very bad idea not to use a well established email service provider:

1. Sending emails in bulk without having seriously good relationships with all the companies who take those emails in can get your email address blacklisted. A blacklisted email address means your messages won’t go through – they’ll get blocked.

2. In order to send emails to large groups you legally need to have proof that you have their permission to send those emails. By using an ESP (email service provider) you will have record of the sign up and can prove someone opted-in or even double opted-in (meaning they confirmed by clicking a link in their email that they wanted to be on YOUR list).

3. If you send emails to people who don’t want them you are spamming. People can report you as a spammer right in their email account. Spamming is against the law. If you use an ESP you can give your subscribers an easy way to unsubscribe from your list and they will be automatically removed. This is better than trying to remember who said they didn’t want your bulk emails and making sure you don’t send them an email through your outlook.

So there are a few good reasons why you should have an ESP. The next step is finding a great one. I always recommend Aweber.

There are so many things that make Aweber superior to other programs that allow you to send out emails in large quantities. The two biggest benefits I see are:

1. Deliverability

Aweber’s messages get delivered to the vast majority of all who asked to receive AND they get delivered fast. You can also track a large amount of details like how many people opened your emails, where people clicked, how many people signed up per day and so much more.

2. Ease of Use

I’ve come to realize how very important it is that a program is easy to use. I’m pretty techy. Much more techy than a lot of people but when a program has too many steps I end up just not doing them and not using the program to it’s best use. Aweber is an easy program to use.

They have amazing customer support and customer training. They even show you where you are in the setup process by using a percentage bar across the bottom of your screen while you get set up – I love that feature. The percentage bar actually shows you what step you are at in the setup, what to do next and gives you a link to click to go to the next step. It’s pretty much fail-proof setup!

On top of that they also have email, instant message AND phone support if you need extra help. If you are online much these days you’ll know that many popular software companies skimp on the phone service and don’t let you call them AT ALL with your questions.

What else can Aweber do?

Here is how Aweber can make your business run more smoothly:

1. Email Newsletters:

You can send out email newsletter using Aweber, that’s the main feature of course. Aweber will save you a lot of time if you write up a few or even a dozen email newsletters in advance and then schedule them to go out whenever you want them to.

Aweber also have newsletter templates that will save you time and money. You don’t even need to pay someone to have a great looking newsletter – just choose a template and you’ll be off and running.

2. Get New Leads While You Sleep (or golf, or play with the kids):

Another important feature is that you can have people sign up to your email list automatically. All they do is enter their name and email into your signup form and you’ve got yourself a new subscriber who is ready and waiting for you to contact them.

3. Generate Automatic Marketing Messages:

The autoresponder feature allows you to automatically start sending emails out to a new subscriber to your list. You can set this messages to start immediately and go for as long as you like – meaning not only can you get leads while you sleep but those leads can turn into customers while you’re sleeping, on vacation, or whatever.

4. Unlimited Campaigns:

You are limited to just one marketing or email campaign when you use aweber. You can separate your email lists into categories, or groups, or topics. Whatever works best for you. You can also collect additional information about your leads like where they live, their birthday, etc.

5. Analyze Your Stats:

Aweber also has great stats as I mentioned a little bit earlier. You can find out many details about where someone signed up to your list, how many people signed up versus saw the page (conversion rate), how many people opened your emails and more. This allows you to get even better results out of your email marketing.

Why Aren’t People Getting My Emails??

Are you worried people are not getting your emails?

I’ve set up a lot of online shopping carts and email marketing systems for clients and I often get the question: “People say they’re not getting my emails – Why Not?”

The first thing I like to make sure my clients understand is that we can’t control who gets our emails, we can only do our best to follow the rules and laws (aka Can-Spam Law) to make sure we get the best chance of having our emails delivered.

Yes, when you send out a personal email to your friend Joe it gets there just about every time – but setting up a mass mailing system and sending out emails in bulk is different, very different.

You see, when you send out mass email messages through a system you have to pass a set of rules and regulations. It doesn’t just go through because you say so. The reason it is this way is because of the spammers, the people who seriously abuse the system and of course the honest people have to pay by bending to prove they are not spammers.

Where Does Your Email Go?

Here’s a simple description of what happens when you have an email scheduled to go out through a program like 1ShoppingCart or Aweber.

- The email is usually given a potential spam rating and sent out into cyberspace.

- The email arrives at the email pick up portal (just made that up) out there in cyberspace. Now the pick up portal will be different depending on where someone’s email comes in. Many people use free email accounts these days so the pick up portal could be gmail, yahoo, hotmail, or a host of others. Each one sorts through the mail differently and they make a decision as to what gets:
a) chucked in the garbage, never to be seen by the recipient
b) sent to the ’spam’ folder
c) sent directly to the inbox
You can’t control the pick up portal. Once it gets there, the delivery is beyond your control.

What can you do to make sure the emails get there?

My clients ask me this question and I have a hard time responding because it’s not just one thing.

1. Make sure your spam rating is low. Most good systems will have a check that you can use to make sure you are not using overly ’spammy’ words or phrases that will trigger the filters and make your email ‘poof’ into thin air! Use this to make sure all your messages get through.

2. Use a system that has good relationships with the email hosts. I personally highly recommend Aweber if you just need an email service provider, and 1ShoppingCart is a good program if you need an autoresponder plus shopping cart plus affiliate program.

3. Don’t send from a free email! First off, it just looks unprofessional to be sending a business email from you@hotmail.com. It also isn’t a good idea because spammers use free emails and using one yourself gives you a ‘check’ on the list of potential things a spammer does and puts your email one step closer to the garbage ‘poof’ vanished category.

4. Give people very clear directions. If you have a double opt-in system make sure people know this and they know they need to open up an email (give the subjectline even) and click to receive email from you. Aweber is so awesome they have an automatic thank you page that tells your subscribers this, most programs don’t.

5. Tell your people to avoid Yahoo. I haven’t checked into this lately but not too long ago Yahoo was terrible for letting autoresponder messages come through.

6. Let it go. Here’s the thing. Everything I mention here and more is a lot of work. Is it worth it? That’s up to you. I prefer to do everything I can to get my emails delivered, and then I will answer any individual issues as they arise. If someone isn’t getting your email and they really want to, they’ll let you know. Then you can troubleshoot the situation and figure out why you’re not getting through to them.

Technology isn’t perfect and you can’t expect it to work like a well oiled machine, it just doesn’t yet. Remember the internet is a baby, just learning to take it’s first steps and you’re on the cutting edge and doing what the majority of businesses don’t know how to do yet so sometimes you just have patience and let it go.
