What an {Online} Community Can Do

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Recently a friend lost her baby boy. What an amazingly sad and difficult time it is right now for her and her family. She’s an internet business owner/marketer.

You’ve probably heard me talk about her if you’ve read my blog or emails for any period of time. She’s Melissa Ingold, the Internet Marketing Sweetie. Her son who left all too soon was Kyle.

Just recently the work at home mom community stood up in response to a call out for help that Kelly McCausey made. It was to raise close to $7000 for Kyle’s funeral.

Yes, Melissa does well online. But like any of us she and her husband had made commitments that needed to be filled even in a difficult time like this. She was in the process of selling/buying a house when this happened suddenly. Kyle was sick, but he was expected to live well past his second birthday and on to be about ten years old.

My heart hurts for Melissa. I watched a very close friend and her husband loose their newborn baby after just a day and saw firsthand the pain they went through. I can’t imagine having to say goodbye to a child after holding him, loving him and being there for him every step of the way for almost two years.

I also understand that in a time like this the last thing my friend and her husband SHOULD have been dealing with were funeral costs and arrangements. But they did. They didn’t have the money for the funeral and I watched as they tried to hold their greif together while making calls and figuring how in the world they would pay to lay their little angel to rest.

But what I saw happen with Melissa makes me very proud to be a part of this community. A community online that cares, that isn’t just in it for the money and that stands up to help a friend with open arms when needed.

Here’s an update from Kelly:

Donation Update as of July 14th:
Total Given: $6824.50.

The Fundraiser is Officially Over…

Melissa wrote me to say that the bill is officially taken care of. She is totally blown away of course!

Kelly, what a wonderful thing you did for Melissa and her family – I’m so proud to call you a friend!

And to you – the Work at Home (& WAHM) Community I’m so proud of YOU for stepping up to help in whatever way you could – be in funds or in thoughts or in prayers.

And Melissa I’m so sorry for your loss and I hope this community effort has in some small way helped to ease the situation. My friend also had two children and I know staying strong for them helped her to move forward and live life to honor her daughter’s memory. Hugs!

Now don’t let anyone ever tell you the friends and business connections you meet online are not ‘REAL’. They are as real as the money they raised to help a friend in need!

That’s what a community can do.

Let’s keep sending Melissa and her family our deepest condences while they come to grips with a new life without their baby boy.

Vacations and Business Clarity

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

It’s been quiet around here, real quiet.

I apologize if you’ve been waiting for a new post!

I took a short-planned vacation to my home province of Newfoundland. During the last two weeks I’ve been on very light business duty. My only real responsibility was to my students at Website Design Mojo where impressive new websites are being created!

Newfoundland is a gorgeous place. I grew up here until I was 13 and then later came back to go to University at 19. While I lived here it was just a place where I grew up. It was nice.

But I didn’t see the real, amazing beauty of this province until going away and returning with fresh eyes. I mean take a look at these scenes, which are all over the place here:

The same thing seems to happen with your business when you take the opportunity to step back and look at things after you’ve taken a break.

I have exciting new plans for Marketers Mojo that have been allow to steep while I’ve been away and allow me to get even more clear on what I need to do next.

I’ll share some of my plans with you soon and I’d love your feedback.

For now, though, I encourage you to take a step back and see your business from the big picture point of view – you might be surprised at how different it looks and how much you can do when you see things from another point of view!

The Mentoring Program That Paid For Itself

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

As you learn how to run a business it’s just unrealistic to think you can and should go it alone.

I mean if we think about how we learn all through our lives we have mentors for just about everything we do:

- Our parents are mentors as we are welcomed to the world and then try to figure out what it’s all about.
- Our friends are mentors when they’re learned something we don’t yet know.
- Our school teachers are mentors as we learn the skills we need to go get jobs (if we so choose to ;)

So why do we sometimes think in business we should throw away the mentor mentality and figure it all out ourselves? Well, we shouldn’t!

I became a bit of a membership-site-aholic a few years ago and joined a lot of different ones. What I can tell you without a doubt is that not all membership sites are created equal.

Meet Lynn Terry:
I don’t know when exactly I first heard of Lynn Terry but I’ve been reading her Clicknewz blog for many years now, about five. I was certainly impressed by her story – a single mom who worked her way from not enough money for groceries to internet marketing success story. I was also impressed by the amount of seriously high quality content she gave away for free.

I don’t know what took me so long to join Lynn’s Elite Membership Forum. I knew Lynn knew her stuff, was a successful affiliate marketer and had a seriously loyal following.

Well if I think a little harder I guess I was tired of ‘wasting’ monthly membership fees and was weary of joining another membership group that I just used as a distraction to go ‘chat’ and not get anything done with.

But I bit the bullet and paid out the monthly membership cost to join the Elites.

Fast forward seven months and here are direct results from my time there:

1. $46+ Monthly Commish: As a result of November’s challenge I am now in the #2, #3, #4 & #10 positions for ‘Audio Acrobat Review’ and am earning a recurring profit of $46.08 in affiliate commissions every month. Considering I had no affiliate commissions from Audio Acrobat when I started the program this challenge alone has more than paid for my membership.

2. $125+ Sales Profits: I decided to write a report on my success hosting a virtual event last year. I wasn’t sure if I should sell it or give it away. Now while giving away quality reports is a great way to boost business, Lynn and the gang over at the elite forum suggested I sell it. And sell it I did! I put it into the 10 Day May Madness sale for just $5 and sold over 25. That’s an initial profit of over $125. Another four months of membership paid for.

3. Coaching Program Success: You probably know that I’m running a coaching program right now on how to create a website with WordPress. My planning of this event coincided perfectly with May’s challenge to create a product and so I accepted the challenge and posted my planning and progress on the forum. It was great to use the forum as a place to get feedback on how I was doing and suggestions on what else could be done. The coaching program has been a wonderful success for it’s first run with 21 students. Again, making the monthly membership payment easily paid up for a few years.

Now I know you know I can’t promise you’ll make your money back in the first week or the first month as your results may completely vary. What I can promise you is this:

“Lynn Terry and the Elite members are amoung the most dedicated online marketers out there. Lynn truely cares about helping her members and her market get from start to profit, and then repeat. “

The Self Starters Weekly Tips Elite membership is the ONLY membership program I now pay a monthly fee for and I’d be willing to pay double or triple for what I receive there.

So the membership has been closed for a while. Lynn’s been moving things around, making changes and improvements and gearing up for more members to join us.

Well I just got word the doors are open and you can sneek in before everyone else even knows about it!

Come join me on the forums (I visit and comment daily) and get the mentoring and support you need to get motivated and do greater things with your business. Here’s the link:

Over the weekend I watched an 88 year old Betty White do her thing on Saturday Night Live. As I watched I couldn’t help but wonder how many years she has left because she’s lived such a full life and how amazing to top it off with an event to remember.
Times 100 Most Influential People in the World Gala New York City
I also couldn’t help but wonder if I’ll have so many truly great accomplishments to look back on when I turn 88.

It was such a strange and amazing turn of events the lead to the talent actress hosting the popular late night show. It was a mixture of old and new.

After fans saw Betty on the Snickers commercial that featured her as a pseudo football player they started a Facebook campaign to get her on the show.

Betty’s career spans 70 years. SEVENTY YEARS!

I loved her on the Golden Girls, she was absolutely my favorite character.

There’s No Internet Marketer Who Compares

For all intents and purposes marketing on the internet started no earlier than 1980′s, and that’s really pushing it since about 99% of people had no idea how to sell a thing online in the 80′s. So, at most, we’ve got experts who’ve been in this field for 30 years but they would be very few and far between. Most people have no more than 15 years in internet marketing.

See what I’m getting at here? We ARE pioneers. We ARE paving a new road. Going where no man or woman has gone before. {dun da dun, la, la, la, la, la, la <-- star trek theme song ;) } Isn't that exciting, and amazing?

And so I get back to my question of Who Will Be The First Golden Girl of Internet Marketing.

Will it be you? Will it be me? Will it be one of the many, amazing women marketers out there literally making the world a better place by sharing their wealth of information so others can build an income online?

In It to Win It?

I know with all my heart I’m in this one for the long haul. It’s what I’m absolutely called to do. I see myself doing nothing else for my entire life.

I don’t even see myself retiring! Because retirely means leaving a J.O.B. to live your life. But I plan on making my business PART of my life like Betty White has done so beautifully!

But You Suck at Sales!

People have tried to tell me I was wrong. That I wasn’t cut out for this. I was even told: “Angela, You’re just not a sales person.” Ummm, the continuous stream of paypal payments this week tells a different story, you see.

To be fair they were right, I’m not a salesperson. At least not in the old fashioned sense of the word. And I’m glad. You see the internet has changed the way many do business. I’m not the sleezy Amway rep who pushes their way into your home and tries to sell you a bunch of stuff you don’t need and weren’t looking for.

No, I’m the kind of salesperson who meets you where you’re at, who listens, who learns what you really need or want and helps you get it. THAT’S the kind of salesperson I LOVE to be.

I don’t really care if I’m the first Betty White of Internet Marketing. That’s not my point. The point is to make you think about your legacy, your life’s work and how you’ll feel when you turn 88 and look back on all you’ve done.

Now that’s something worth thinking about…

Do People Really Make Money Online?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I got this question yesterday and asked Adrian if he was ok with me posting to my blog. I love getting questions like this because it makes me reflect on what I’ve accomplished and it also helps me understand what my subscribers and readers are feeling challenged by.

Here’s my answer to the question: Do People Really Make Money Online?

Hey Angela:

I guess i am a bit skeptical. Do people really make money online.
I was reading an article about CPA networks and was wondering if you have ever come accross CPA network. I am thinking of starting an online business but not sure where to start and if it can replace my income eventually.

Thanks,
adrian

Hi Adrian,

Thanks so much for your email and for trusting me with that question.

I answered your question below and it turned into quite the article. Do you mind if I post your question along with your first name on my site? I plan on posting my answer but it would be great to post the question too – then when you start your business come back and remind me so I can update the page with your website link ;)

Please let me know.

Here’s my answer:

I know it is hard to believe for some. Actually my parents still don’t really believe it even though I’ve worked from home full time myself now for over three years.

Here’s what I can tell you:

My first year I made $18,000 while working full time at a job the first half the year.
My second year I made about $35,000
In my third year I made some major changes to my business and basicly took half the year off and still made about $16,000.

Now these aren’t million dollar or even six figure quotes of fame and fortune. Could I have made more? Absolutely. I flip-flopped from business model to business model, basically trying out a lot of different things – I had no focus!

But I was also learning how to run a business while I earned, which isn’t something that everyone has a natural talent to do. I consider my first three years my ‘paid schooling’. Not bad considering I got paid over $60,000 to go to school.

I can also tell you there are many, many ways to make money online. In those first three years I would say I flip flopped from idea to idea, making a bit here and there. Here are just some of the things I did to make money:

- Virtual Assistant business: This involved building websites, doing site updates, writing articles, editing content, submitting to website directories and just about anything an online business owner asked me to do.

- Article Services: I bought a website for $500 that served clients who needed original articles written. That site made me a profit of about $1000 per month. I kept it for about a year and then decided to sell it for $3000 which was actually way under value and still made six times what I originally paid. I actually consider selling that site one of my biggest mistakes and I’m thinking of starting one up again.

- Information Products: I’ve written a number of information products on topics ranging from how I started my virtual assistant business, how to start an affiliate program, how to set up and run teleseminars and my latest is about how to set up and run virtual events.

affiliate marketing- Affiliate Sales: As an affiliate for other people’s products I have made thousands of dollars, won an ipod and a cash bonus. What I do is make recommendations for quality products and then when someone takes that recommendation I make a referral fee. There’s more information on how that works here:
http://www.marketersmojo.com/freebies/beginners-guides/affiliate-marketing/

- Coaching Programs: I’ve set up programs where I’ve coached clients on various topics including how to be an affiliate manager, how to set up teleseminars and my latest is on how to create your own website. You might be interested in checking that out as it covers so much more than just putting up websites, it’s also about the research, the content, the marketing and the metrics:
http://www.websitedesignmojo.com

- Website Design: I currently have a website design business where I also create sites for clients. I charge $300 upwards of $3000 for various services and get new clients on a regular basis. If you want to peek that’s here:
http://www.blogsitemojo.com

So as you can see there are quite a few ways to make money online. Of course there are even more than I’ve listed, including CPA which you mentioned. I haven’t any experience with CPA but from what I understand of it, it’s very legitimate. CPA stands for cost per acquisition and from what I’ve seen it’s something a lot of the larger companies offer as an ‘affiliate program’. Basically you are getting paid to get someone to sign up for a free offer, of a free product, etc.

For example – I know of a very successful affiliate marketer in the ‘online dating’ niche. She has ads on her site that get people to sign up for a free compatibility test. It costs nothing and she gets paid for the sign up, the acquisition. Companies do this because they know how much each sign up is worth. They figure this out by realizing that for every 100 customers, X number of customers will buy. So, if they get 5 sales out of every 100 sign ups they can afford to pay out a percentage of that so they have access to more leads then they can get themselves.

I hope that helps!

Why Learn Website Design?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

I have a friend who is 33 years old and still doesn’t have her license. Now if she were in a big city with subways to get her anywhere in a zip no problem, but she’s in a more rural area where often she’s left stranded with no way to do what she needs to.

Luckily my friend is married so her husband drives her around for free. But can you imagine how expensive it would be for her to pay a cab driver every time she needed milk, groceries, to shuttle the kids around, visit friends, go to work, etc?

You’re in exactly the same situation if you don’t know how to build, update and maintain your website.

Now let’s say you have it in your budget to pay a website designer and you feel you just don’t have time to do it yourself. I beg to differ and here’s why:

- Indecision Costs: If you don’t understand the software for your website you will spend a lot of time asking your designer for help or revamping what you thought you wanted, this is going to cost you big time. Kind of like if you asked the cab drive to just start driving and you’d figure out how to get there as you go!

- Stagnation Costs: Let’s say you’ve got a great idea for your website but instead of popping in to do a five minute fix you need to engage a website designer for services, explain to them what you need, wait for them to get to it, check if they did it right and then maybe have them tweak if you need changes. This is going to take a LOT longer than a quick DIY tweak. Because of that you’ll end up doing a LOT less and becoming stagnant.

- Knowledge Pays: Even if you do intend to outsource your website design to a smart, responsive and quick website person, it will pay off big time to know your software and know it well.

There’s a Time to Outsource

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should never outsource but I am saying that first you should learn to do it yourself. That way you KNOW EXACTLY where you’re going and how to get there – just like you do when you order a cab!

How?

Well I highly recommend WordPress. It’s a free software program that you install on your hosting account. It can be accessed from anywhere and with a little practice you’ll be able to update your site in no time flat!

Website Design Coaching Program Fast Movers Discount

This is so important and something I see so many marketers needing badly that I’ve decided to put together a thorough coaching program for a limited number of students. For now up until May 12th there is a ‘fast movers‘ special happening where you can get $100 off the already low class fee. Check it out here:
http://www.websitedesignmojo.com

ps. If you’re not quite sure yet you can sign up for the free teleseminar on May 25th, just keep in mind the fast mover special will be over by then. Here’s that link again, scroll down to the bottom to sign up for the ‘sneek peek’:
http://www.websitedesignmojo.com

I’m excited! Starting tomorrow, May 10th the crazy-cool ladies (myself included ;) ) over at Mom Masterminds are holding a $5 sale called 10 Day May Madness.

The Amazing Offers Start May 10th

You can get products and services ranging in regular price from $8 – $59, all for just five bucks.

I’ve got a product in there that I’m thinking you might want to snag up, it’s the Virtual Event Case Study which is in release price of $17, and then will be $27 regular price. But for the next 10 days you can grab it for just $5.

So I’ve got my wish list picked out. Here’s what I’m buying:

Virtual Event Case Study

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Planning your own virtual event? Interested in offering virtual event services? Or maybe you are looking for a virtual event planning course to decide if it’s something you’d like to do.

Well last year I hosted my own virtual event called the Marketers Mojo Virtual Conference. It was a four-day event that featured twenty-two speakers. I made a profit of $1689 and created a product that is still being sold here:
http://www.MarketersMojoVirtualConference.com

While looking back through my products from the previous year it occured to me that I had made pretty good records of everything I did to plan, host and promote this virtual event. That’s when I made the decision to create a special report called the ‘Virtual Event Case Study’.

Virtual Event Planning
Who Is Virtual Event Case Study For?
Internet Marketers, Virtual Assistants, Authors, Speakers and other small business owners who have a message they’d like to share with their market.

What Is The Report About?
It’s a 18-page report that goes step-by-step through a real case study of a virtual event that brought in over $2500 in sales and a profit of $1689 (after paying affiliates).

Included in the report are many templates, including:
- Email to send potential speakers.
- Email to send speakers who accept invitation.
- Salespage template example.
- Download page template example.
- Handout page example.

Why Buy It?
You can certainly go full steam ahead without buying this case study like I did. The problem is you’ll probably run into some of the speed bumps and issues that you can only learn from experience (your own or someone else’s).

In this report I share some of the issues you’ll need to deal with at most virtual events as well as what I would do differently the second time around.

How Is The Report Delivered?
Upon purchase you’ll choose a username and password to enter our member access area. From there you can log into your account and instantly download the pdf report. The templates and files are linked within the pdf report.

Were To Buy It?
You can grab this report by clicking the link below. It’s just $27 right now:

How Pretty is Your Washroom?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

At least once a week or so I love getting out to work at a local hometown coffee shop. It really is a beautiful setting. The shop is right on the lake with a porch for working right in nature on sunny days. It’s nicely designed with every detail from coffee art on the walls, a fancy magazine rack on the wall, comfy chairs next to little fireplaces, marble tops and modern chairs in the table and chair section. They also have great coffee, drinks and delicious treats!

All that in itself is impressive but I think I’ve become accustomed to it. Today I was even more impressed when I went to the ladies room and found this:

It’s just the prettiest little washroom I’ve ever seen at a local business. The picture doesn’t really do it justice, it’s very cute and very clean. To me it shows that the owners take care in the little details. The creativity needed to put this together this didn’t come from someone with short-term profits in mind – it came from a long-term investment in their business and branding.

Ok, are you now wondering – “Yea, great Angela, nice washroom! Who cares?!”

Well I do. The customer. I like a business who things about things that I may or may not see, about the overall and complete customer experience.

How can you do this in online business? How can you pretty up your washroom online? Well here are just a few ideas:

  • Pretty up your emails – Whether you use HTML or text emails you can take care in crafting a message that is easy to read and is also infused with personality. You can use *** or ^^ or ;) or any combinations you like to spruce things up a little.
  • 404 Error Pages – I’m totally guilty of this one. Sometimes people won’t find what they’re looking for on your site and they’ll end up at an ugly 404 error page. Have your website designer or DIY if you know how and create a warm, inviting reception for those who’ve lost their way!
  • Shopping Cart Consistency – Is your shopping cart a messy jumble? Make sure there is a smooth transition from prospect to customer.
  • Product Delivery – Are you still showing you care after they pay? Take a look at your product deliver and ask yourself how smooth it is. Is it super-simple for the customer to get what they’ve purchased? Have a few people do test sales for you if you are unsure.

I just think it’s a wonderful lesson in how much it shows when you take care and put the love into your business!

Angela Wills

p.s. Now I couldn’t leave this post without telling you where to find this awesome little coffee shop. It’s called Black River Coffee and it’s located on High Street in Sutton, Ontario. Be sure to check them out and if you do tell them you found them via my blog ;) And if you’ve got to go to the ladies room you know it’s all good (men – I’m sure the men’s washroom is just as cool)

If You Don’t Have Money to Burn, Don’t!

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I’m a little flabbergasted at the fact that some people will jump into an internet business with alll guns blazing, burn through a ton of money and then blame everyone but themselves for having zero success with it all.

This is coming from a very recent personal experience with a client. Unfortunately this client spent a lot of money in all the wrong places. She was under the impression that if she just did this one thing really well then her entire business would be built.

Well six months, thousands of dollars and hundreds of articles later he website has not made a single penny.

Now she’s threatening to call it quits and cancel it all because she’s out of cash.

This is an all too common scenario in the internet marketing world.

It just makes me wonder why in the world is someone willing spending all their cash on an unproven business if they don’t have the extra cash to burn?!

As I say in my Dear Guru song you can’t just WISH for traffic and knock on wood! It just doesn’t work that way.

It’s SOOO frustrating as a service provider to see new business owner after new business owner expecting that they’ll simply get rich on the internet with a few thousand dollars and no business planning or experience.

Internet Marketing is NOT a Business Plan

You can not simply throw up a website, throw a ton of niche topic articles up, add a few affiliate links and then wait for the cash to roll in – ok?

What annoys me the most is when I tell people the truth they try to tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about, that there must be a simple way, an easy way (a GET RICH QUICK WAY????)

I know your reading my blog because you’re a smart marketer so I’m sure you already know this but I’m on a rant so please bear with me when I say:

The ONLY Person Responsible For Your Businesses Success (Or Failure) Is YOU!

Own up to it! Take Responsibility! Take Action and Get It Right!

As Dr. Phil says: “you can’t change what you won’t acknowledge”

Your business success is not the responsibility of your coach, your website designer, your virtual assistant or your mama! (lol) It’s all you!

Now that may be a hard pill to swallow for some, myself included.

So with all my ranting you might ask if I have any actual advice. How do you make sure you don’t burn through a ton of cash on the WRONG marketing or even the wrong business.

Well it comes down to two things:
1. Time
or
2. Money

1. Nobody wants to spend a lot of time to build a successful business but those who really, really want a successful business will do it. I have been at this for about seven years now. It’s not a short-term plan for me. I know that every day there are new stats to view, new customers to talk to, new blog posts write, new blog posts to read, new trends to keep up on, etc, etc, etc. I’m just fine and dandy with that and in fact I LOVE it. If you don’t have or are not willing to invest the time it takes to really understand your business, your market and your marketing then you should find something you really like instead.

2. If you have the money to try out new businesses then you’ve got to start out smart and ‘sample’ them until they are proven. I was watching the show ‘Shark Tank’ one night and one of the investors said he could take an internet business from zero to $50 million in no time. The thing he didn’t say was that it probably costs him millions to get there and that he’s probably lost a whole lot of money testing! Nobody knows exactly how a market is going to react and what exactly they’ll buy until they test.

As I like to say: “It’s all just a guess, until you test.”

I’ve heard many successful marketers talk about failed business ventures. Read any success story and you’ll hear it sprinkled with failures along the way. You HAVE to be willing and able to fail. You also have to be willing and able to TRACK!

It’s unbelievable to me how many people are actually oblivious to how many visitors they get to their website. It’s like some magical fairy is just going to tell them how to run their business?!

It just doesn’t work that way.

Ok, on to my advice.

Here’s the simplest plan I have for running a successful online business:

1. Work
2. Test
3. Track
4. Repeat What Works
5. Repeat 1 to 4

Basically I’m saying you NEED to figure it out. You need to use YOUR brain, not everyone elses. Yes, consultants and VAs and designers and great for advice but you make a big mistake when you rely on them to build your business FOR you.

Now if all my ranting hasn’t made you run for the hills I have a few more things to share with you:

The Best Way to Succeed in Scheduling a Project

Monday, April 19th, 2010

As a Project Manager, you need to manage people, money, suppliers, equipment—the list is never ending. The trick is to be focused. Set yourself 5 personal goals to achieve. If you can meet these simple goals for each project, then you will achieve total success. So read on, to learn…

The 5 Goals of a Project Manager

These goals are generic to all industries and all types of projects. Regardless of your level of experience in project management, set these 5 goals for every project you manage.

Goal 1: To finish on time

This is the oldest but trickiest goal in the book. It’s the most difficult because the requirements often change during the project and the schedule was probably optimistic in the first place.

To succeed, you need to manage your scope very carefully. Implement a change control process so that any changes to the scope are properly managed.

Always keep your plan up to date, recording actual vs. planned progress. Identify any deviations from plan and fix them quickly.

Goal 2: To finish under budget

To make sure that your project costs don’t spiral, you need to set a project budget at the start to compare against. Include in this budget, all of the types of project costs that will accrue, whether they are to do with people, equipment, suppliers or materials. Then work out how much each task in your plan is going to cost to complete and track any deviations from this plan.

Make sure that if you over-spend on some tasks, that you under-spend on others. In this way, you can control your spend and deliver under budget.

Goal 3: To meet the requirements

The goal here is to meet the requirements that were set for the project at the start. Whether the requirements were to install a new IT system, build a bridge or implement new processes, your project needs to produce solutions which meet these requirements 100%.

The trick here is to make sure that you have a detailed enough set of requirements at the beginning. If they are ambiguous in any way, then what was initially seen as a small piece of work could become huge, taking up valuable time and resources to complete.

Goal 4: To keep customers happy

You could finish your project on time, under budget and have met 100% of the requirements—but still have unhappy customers. This is usually because their expectations have changed since the project started and have not been properly managed.

To ensure that your project sponsor, customer and other stakeholders are happy at the end of your project, you need to manage their expectations carefully. Make sure you always keep them properly informed of progress. “Keep it real” by giving them a crystal clear view of progress to date. Let them voice their concerns or ideas regularly. Tell them upfront when you can’t deliver on time, or when a change needs to be made. Openness and honesty are always the best tools for setting customer expectations.

Goal 5: To ensure a happy team

If you can do all of this with a happy team, then you’ll be more than willing to do it all again for the next project. And that’s how your staff will feel also. Staff satisfaction is critical to your project’s success.

So keep your team happy by rewarding and recognizing them for their successes. Assign them work that complements their strengths and conduct team building exercises to boost morale. With a happy motivated team, you can achieve anything!

And there you have it. The 5 goals you need to set yourself for every project.

Of course, you should always work smart to achieve these goals more easily.

Rapid Product Formula is a four week coaching program that is run by Nicole Dean and Ronnie Nijmeh. The program reveals a specific formula for creating information products that your market is begging for. Here’s the formula:

rapid products formula

Each week will cover a different (by key) part of the equation:

Week 1: USP (Unique Selling Proposition)
Week 2: RP (Rapid Product)
Week 3: SP (Sales Process)
Week 4: MP (Marketing and Promotions)

The formula is such a geeky way to show how information products are made and I love it! (I used to be a chemist, did ya know?) It clearly shows the steps needed to create a profitable product online.

This program starts on April 26th and is delivered via weekly in-depth reports and materials (checklists, worksheets, brainstorming materials, etc). There are three levels available:
Back Stage Pass: $99
VIP: $297 (after April 15 $397)
All Access: $797 (after April 15 $997)

Each level provides a different degree of access to the two fabulous coaches, Nicole and Ronnie.

Here’s the rundown of what every level includes:

* 4 Jam Packed Weekly Lessons
* Checklists & Worksheets
* Weekly Training with Pre-Call PDF plus Recording
* Live Q&A Call each Thursday (they’ll give you the option to send in your questions)

Because I really wanted to check this program out for you before recommended it I managed to twist Ronnie’s arm and convince him to send me a little sneek peek of week 1. Let me tell you they leave no stone unturned here and give you ALL formats so that no matter if you’re a visual, audio or hands-on learner you’ll get what you need.

Here’s a sneek peek at my sneek peek (shhhh) ;)

And that’s just week 1!

It’s also recommended you already have at least one WordPress blog and that you have something you are ready to share in a product.

This program is NOT for someone brand spanking new to the internet marketing world. It’s not a complete beginner’s course.

Marketers Mojo Bonus Offer

If all of the above is NOT enough to make you crazy excited about this offer I want to sweeten it even more by giving you my 12 week course on how to start and run a profitable affiliate program: Affiliate Manager Mojo.

Customer Service Stories

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

I’m sitting here at a local coffee shop working and I can’t help but overhearing the relatively loud conversation going on across from me. There are two gentlemen swapping customer service stories.

One bad, one good.

I’m fascinated by the details and descriptions.

Story one:
The gentleman is a war veteran who is a little hard of hearing and was having a terrible time getting help with a password situation on his computer. The lady was not understanding of his hearing imparment and had no patience in explaining. He’s definitely perterbed.

Story two:
This gentleman bought a coffee maker not unlike the Tassimo machine I won a while ago. He brought it home and got all set up to make his custom coffee. Then, to his disspointement, nothing came out. So he tried everything he could think of and then finally decided to call the manufacturers number. Over the phone he was told the problem with the machine couldn’t be fixed and that they would send him out a new machine right away. Then, the lady on the phone told him she’d be sending out a bunch of free coffee too. Boy was he impressed!

This conversation went on for about 20 minutes.

Don’t think your customers are not telling stories about you. They are. Make sure they sound like Story Two!

Working Hard Means Nothing

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

You’re supposed to grow up, go to university, get a ‘good job’ and ‘work hard’ until you’re like 65 – THEN you can retire and enjoy life.

Riiiiiiight?

BA.LO.NY!

I was just reading a post by Alice Seba on Melissa Ingold’s Internet Marketing Sweetie Blog. Alice was talking about the post series Melissa has been writing about Working Less & Earning More.

We tend to associate working more with earning more but that doesn’t have to be true. I know I’ve fallen into that trap a time or two and I’ve worked with many clients who were working their buts off and even putting their health at risk.

Here is something that Alice said in the post and I wholehearted-ly agree:

You gotta admire Melissa and all that she’s accomplished. She’s the mom of 3 and is fighting daily to get appropriate medical care for her littlest one who has been diagnosed with a very rare disease. You can bet she’s got a lot on her plate, but she seems to manage it flawlessly and with zero complaint. This gal has her priorities in order.

I’m going to be going back over Melissa’s posts with a fine-tooth comb to see how I can work smarter, not harder.

How about you?

Check out the blog and you won’t be sorry. Come back and tell me how you plan to work smarter in your own business!

Busting Through Work at Home Loneliness!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

“life’s a journey, not a destination”
Steve Tyler, Aerosmith

Hi again!

Just a couple of days ago I mentioned how I’m coming up on three years working from home full time. It’s been a wild ride and I love being able to pick up and work whenever and whever I want.

That’s exactly what I want to talk about today.

Is It Lonely Working From Home?

For the first couple of years I spent all my time working on my home computer, which resides in the corner of my living room. Then I got myself a laptop and thought it was awesome that I could work from the couch, from the kitchen or while sitting out on the porch on a sunny day.

That was enough in the beginning.

But now, three years into working from home I realize how very isolating it can be. The only people I was seeing were my parents (who’s apartment I live in), my son and my boyfriend. While I love them all I believe we really need a LOT more human interaction than that.

So this year I did something about it!

Here are my tips and ideas on how to bust through work at home lonliness whlie keeping up productivity:

- Work somewhere else – Yea seems simple enough but sometimes we think it’s harder than it actually is to be mobile with our business. I do a number of services for clients including website updates, affiliate management, email marketing and more and I thought it would be just too hard to organize that all and take it on the go. Well, Roboform and a simple USB drive later my netbook is loaded with days work at the library, the coffee shop or even at a friend’s house.

- Get Networking – I love going to a monthly networking group I belong to for women. It’s not even really to me about making money. I just love getting out and getting to chat with people who can relate to the joys and struggles of being a business owner. If you’re interested in checking the group out it’s called WINGS. Of course I also love getting out to conferences and seminars too like my recent trip to Podcamp Toronto.

- Connect Via Phone – I’ve made some great friends at networking events and conferences and I love to connect with them via phone to catch up and talk business too. It’s a great way to get ideas and share stories with people who really get it. You could also add a phone component to your current business if you want more people to talk to. Schedule conference calls or teleseminars to share your expertise and talk with real live human beings all at the same time! (by the way CLICK HERE if you want to learn how to set up teleseminars for free)

There you have some of my best tips for beating the work at home blues.

Isn’t life a fun journey!

Working From Home Won’t Make You Happy!

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Coming up in May I’ve been working from home for three years.

Over the last three years I’ve had ups and downs in my business. I’ve earned money that some would consider great for working out of my home and others would consider a waste of time. I’ve also learned a lot about respect, money and myself.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that working from home (online or offline) won’t make you happy.

You see I was miserable in various jobs I had. I went through college for Chemical Engineering Technology – Environmental and then got a job working for the government in a lab. I hated it.

Then I got a job working for an environmental waste company which was less ‘stuck in a lab’ kind of environment and more ‘hands on’. I thought I’d like that more but I hated it.

Then I decided to grab a job closer to home so I didn’t have the hour commute and ended up spending three years at a car bumper painting factory and I was absolutely miserable there.

I really believed the jobs just sucked and that’s why I was unhappy. I thought being a full time business owner was what I needed to make me happy and everything would be perfect if I could just quit that factory job and make a new life for myself working from home online.

So yay, it finally happened! If I remember correctly on the third week in May I left my factory job to come home full time.

I had a plan. I was doing virtual assistant work at the time and I had clients lined up so that I could scale up my business services.

Things seemed dreamy at first. And then a new reality set in. Clients were making unreasonable demands on me, work was piling up that I didn’t feel like doing, money was going out faster than it was coming in.

All of a sudden (it seemed) I had an out of control business.

And you know what? I had created it all.

You see I was wrong. Working at home can’t make me happy and it can’t make you happy. The only thing that can make us truly happy is our own minds.

Happiness is INTERNAL, not EXTERNAL.

I know to some of you this is common knowledge. You’ve lived all your life knowing who you are, what you want and you truly believed you deserved it. If that’s you, awesome for you and I bet you don’t know how seriously jealous I am of that quality!

For me (and I KNOW I’m not alone here) it’s been a long, long struggle to figure out who I am and what I want out of life. It’s been a constant fight against what some people in my life tell me I should be and that voice buried deep inside telling me who I’m MEANT to be.

I heard Oprah say on her show a little while ago that she always knew she was meant for greatness. I believe we all are. I believe I am. I believe that NOW because I know the happiness I seek is going to come from making a difference to others and from finding out how I can make the biggest impact.

So no, my current happiness and growing peace with myself didn’t come from owning my own business.
It came from day by day work on:
- believing in myself
- knowing who I am
- knowing what I want
- being willing to work through the fear
- forgiving my past ‘mistakes’

Let me repeat myself here: The only true happiness won’t come from other people, from a successful business or from anywhere else. It comes from you and from the knowledge that you are the real, true, authentic, amazing and relevant person you were meant to be!
