“Dear Guru, Dear Guru…”

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

The idea for this song has been in my head since the summer but I wasn’t sure if I was brave enough to do it.

Here’s something I did just for fun, to combine work and play. It’s called “Dear Guru” and it’s a parody of a country song called “Dear Abby” that I remembered from when I was a kid.

Hope you enjoy it!

Dear Guru, Dear Guru …
My traffic’s too low
My internet busines is going soo slow
My friends they tell me to go get a job
Won’t you do a joint venture, Won’t you send me a mob
Signed No Traffic

No Traffic, No Traffic…

Chorus:
You have no complaint
The net is what it is and it ain’t what it ain’t
So listen webmaster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for big bucks and knocking on wood

Dear Guru, Dear Guru…
Social Media sucks
I though Twitter and Facebook would make me big bucks!
I’ve got auto-dm’s and send lots of spam tweets
But my paypal is empty, I’m still not an elite
Signed Unsocial

Unsocial, Unsocial…

Repeat Chorus

Dear Guru, Dean Guru…
You said I need a list
But when I sent daily offers they seem to get pissed
I thought buying those names meant I was gonna get rich
But my marketing efforts seem to be in the ditch
Signed list-hater

List-hater, List-hater

Repeat Chorus

Dear Guru, Dean Guru…
I finally figured it out
Getting rich overnight is not what internet marketing’s about
Just like any other business it takes lots of hard work
And now when my friends see me I can’t whipe off this smirk
Signed Money-maker

Hear Me on WAHMTalkRadio This Week!

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I love working from home.

As I spoke with Tishia Lee yesterday on WAHMTalkRadio I was reminded of how awesomely cool it is to work from home.

Working from home allows me:

  • freedom to do what I want when I want
  • the ability to go to my son’s school concerts and field trips anytime
  • the ability to volunteer at school to get an inside look at his education while giving back to my community
  • freedom to choose how I live my life!

So anyway I had a great discussion with Tisha about working from home, starting a VA business, productivity, knowing yourself and being crazy fanatical about your money. Check it out here:

Business, Money & Delusions of Grandeur

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

In the early days of my business I was about 80% percent delusional about how to run a business. I really thought that I just needed to work really hard, believe in the business and everything (ie. THE MONEY) would work itself out. Problem was I had no clue how to really manage my cash flow.

There was no plan. I just got the money, had a spark of an idea and flew with it. My first ‘real’ business was a soapmaking business. I got into that business based on the fact that my hobby was soapmaking and I loved it. I thought that was enough: Some money to get started (borrowed from my parents) and a love of soapmaking.

That’s all you need, right?

Business & Money Management Starts With a Plan

You hear from any business development adviser that you need a business plan. It’s true. But your business plan really doesn’t have to be 30 or 100 pages. It just needs to be clear. You need to know how you are going to make money, how much money, how much you need to survive and how it’s all going to balance out.

You don’t hear many blogs talking about online business tips and advice around money and managing your business money and I wonder why. (or maybe I’m just not finding the right business/money blogs – if you know of any good ones comment and let me know, k?!)

I’m thinking it’s for one of two reasons:
1. People who are great at money management come by it so easily it seems like a no-brainer to them.
2. The people who are terrible at it are keeping their mouths shut because they don’t want other people to know.

I know I fit more into category #2 than category #1. But since I opened up the floodgates in this post I’m ready to just be totally open and honest about my previously lacking money management skills. As Dr.Phil says “you can’t fix what you won’t acknowledge”!

So we know that money is important in business and making sure you run your business in a positive cash flow is a basic business principal that’s often overlooked.

How do you manage you money in business?

Well here are my tips that I’ve learned from being seriously out of control to moving back into control of my money:

- watch your money like a hawk (I use lots of spreadsheets)
- be obsessed with making a profit! (don’t always work for FREE!)
- don’t justify ‘another money making course’ when you can’t afford it
- cut out the time wasters (which are money takers)
- cut out expenses you don’t really need

I’ll be talking more about money on my blog because I think it’s truly important.

What do you think? Is money management hard or easy for you? Any tips on how to keep your business budget in check and profits on the rise?

Podcamp 2010 Toronto – Review & Thoughts

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

So I just spent the weekend at Podcamp Toronto 2010. It’s a completely free two day event with multiple thirty minute sessions running at the same time.

About Podcamp

Podcamp is called an ‘unconference’ where everyone who wants to gets to speak. You basically sign up for a session and do it. I may do one next year if I get brave enough. With 900 people in attendance this year that’s sure to grow next year it’s certainly a large group of people to reach if you do a presentation (although there are usually about 40-80 people in any one session I think).

On Saturday night after podcamp there was a social event at a local pub. It included a talent stage, FREE BEER and Free Food. I have to say how awesome it was to go to an event, pay nothing to get in and then get free drinks and free dinner (oh and there was free coffee during the day) – nice!

Thanks to Jay Moonah who I believe was a podcamp organizer for sharing his guitar (at least I think it was his) with anyone who felt like getting up on stage. Yep, did you guess? I decided to brave the stage and sing a song – I picked ‘Last Kiss’. In case you missed my performance, Pearl Jam does it a *little* bit better ;) :

Update Feb.22nd: So Nathan made a comment below that I should record a video of Last Kiss for those who didn’t make it. Request granted! Here it is:

Who Is a ‘Podcamp’ For

Podcamp is definitely for anyone looking to know more about using online media, both social and digital, to promote or grow a business. It seems to me that most of the topics are given by people who work for corporations rather than solopreneurs working from home.

Even though it’s not always from the perspective of the ‘work at home’ business owner I still found a lot of the information useful. So podcamp, in my opinion, would be for solopreneurs, small business owners and also employees who want to expand their podcasting, internet and social media skills.

The Pod People

I’m still too shy to go around snapping photos of people I have yet to meet or have just met. I did meet lots of great people there.

Sharon, Pam and I were joking about being ‘pod’ people.

From left to right:
Pamela, Imie, Me, Sharon, Ruth

…and a big thanks to Leona (Vice-President of SMG, one of the podcast sponsors) for snapping the above pic .

At the pub I had fun meeting lots of people including Jenn, Andrea and Ryan.

Room For Improvement

Now I definitely don’t want to complain but I thought it might be helpful if I added some constructive feedback here. I heard one Podcamp guest saying since she’s so new to podcasting she would have liked to see a session that walked beginners through how to do it.

She was suggesting something like: “Ok, got the audio – now what do I do with it?” (by the way, I share that info in my own free mini-course here: http://www.marketersmojo.com/freebies/beginners-guides/podcasting)

I personally would love to see more presentations from those who are work from home business owners. Solopreneurs who are making it happen and making a living from home. That would definitely be inspiring to me.

Summing It Up

I think the organizers did a wonderful job. I also attended Podcamp Toronto 2009. Last year the rooms were really crowded but this year there was plenty of room at any event you wanted to attend as long as you showed up on time. I think this had to do with some bigger rooms and more event choices.

There were lots of great presentations and everyone was friendly.

So thank you very much Podcamp Toronto 2010 Organizers and Sponsors for a great event!

Watching TV With The Sound Off…

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

When I was a little girl my grandfather would sit and watch TV with the sound off. He would watch French movies, but he didn’t speak French so he’d turn off the sound and watch.

This seemed crazy to me. But ‘Poppy’ (as I called him) said you could tell a lot just from the body language of the actors. He suggested I try it.

Then as I watched I became fascinated with creating my own story. No longer was it limited to a story I might have found boring and even over my head. Now Poppy and I were watching the same thing but we each were putting our own spin on it, our own ideas and preferences. We were experiencing two completely different shows at exactly the same time. We were now directors telling the story in a way that fit what we wanted.

What does this have to do with online business?

Have you noticed there’s a LOT more noise these days? Back in the day (gee I sound old now) when Poppy was turning the sound off French movies the internet was something we might have seen in some sci-fi movie. It was not reality yet for the common household. I had no idea I’d have so many things battling for my attention and that I’d have to tune out much noise just to get anything done.

Today I closed my Facebook account

Why? There was way too much noise in there. I have virtually ‘turned off the volume’ on one social media site because the noise was completely distracting.

Yes, I know there are ways to manage it all, ways to avoid spending all day on there and ways to make social media work but for me, for now I just need to turn the volume off completely.

I did decide to keep Twitter. That’s like playing to me. It’s like ICQ or MSN from ‘back in the internet olden days’. Remember ICQ – that ‘uh-oh!’ noise when someone messaged you? LOL

I’ll probably open up Facebook again at some point but for now I’m feeling very happy about my decision.

Here’s my point with this post. Don’t keep the volume on just because ‘it’s the thing to do’. Think like Poppy, get creative and give yourself time to use your own imagination.

I’m not sayin you should cancel your Facebook account. Maybe that’s working well for you. What I’m saying is cut out the noise – wherever it is. On the internet it’s harder than ever because information is flying at us from all corners.

I’m tired of all these social media experts, etc, making it sound like you MUST be on Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, YouTube, Flickr, and on and on and on. I say do what you want to do. Watch TV with the sound off – be you and don’t follow the crowd.

If you can do it and concentrate on tasks that give you great Return on Investment (of both TIME and MONEY) then you might just have time to learn a little French if you feel so inclined ;)

The other day in Mom Masterminds a member posted about Outsourcing and what she should know to get started.

As someone who’s provided a service in one way or another for almost four years now I have some ‘insider’ input to add here.

Sometimes you’re ready to outsource. Sometimes you’re not.

when to outsourceKnowing when to outsource is a skill in itself.

Yea, people make outsourcing sound so easy but over the years I’ve seen many, many people struggle with knowing what to outsource (to me as a VA, affiliate manager, blog designer, etc).

Are you sure you’re really ready to outsource?

My suggestion to you is if you think you ARE ready then ask yourself these four questions:

When to Outsource?

1. Have I cut out all dead projects, time wasters and things I do just because someone told me I should? - You know the things that take up time but don’t actually get you anywhere.

2. Have I automated everything I possibly can to save time and money? ie blog posting, email newsletters. getting as organized as you can be can add hours to your day.

3. Do I have systems for everything? No matter how many times I post a blog post if I don’t open up and use my system it takes me longer. Also systems will help you outsource WAY more easily.

4. Do I know what MAKES me money?*this is a biggy* It is amazing to me how many people think the VA will just intuitively know how to make them more money and they can just sit and wait for the cash to roll in. Like an real business, an internet business takes time (YEARS even) to find the ‘sweet spot’, to really understand your customer or clients needs and to respond to them in a way that sends your profit margins up, up, up. You will only make you more money from outsourcing IF
a) they’re doing tasks that give YOU more billable hours or
b) they’re doing tasks you KNOW will make you more money

So there you have it. Before you outsource make sure you know your business inside and out.

One more thing to note: I’m not suggesting you don’t hire someone to help you do things like build a website, write content, make graphics, etc, while you are still figuring out what makes you profitable. Those are more like ‘tasks’ that you hire out on a project basis. What I’m talking about above is when you are ready to hire someone on a regular basis to be an integral part of your business.

p.s. If you really ARE ready to add a team member to your business I recommend you learn from a couple of pros, Nicole Dean and Jimmy D. Brown. They’ve put together a weekly step by step course called Outsource Weekly <– Click to check it out.

Hey gang! I’ve got a great guest blog post from Steve Thomas, a friend from Lynn Terry’s Elite Membership Forum. Please welcome him to the Marketers Mojo blog and as always leave your comments below!

Does positive thinking have anything to do with online marketing business? I suppose that it depends on whether or not you believe that positive thinking does anything at all. Here is my opinion; I think it does!

First let me define positive thinking.

Positive thinking is not about some wish it and it will happen mentality. It is about looking at the situation and thinking about it in such a way that positive results happen, even if the situation itself is not a positive one.

Can you stay positive and learn from the experience when your site crashes? Can you stay positive and figure out a way to profit when you aren’t making any sales? That’s positive thinking.

Why are you attempting to do online marketing?

If you are attempting to do online marketing so that you can get rich quick and become a beach bum on the French Riviera, then you may be a bit disappointed. Not that it can’t happen, but I think your motives are a bit off.

Those I know that are making a bit of money and could actually lie on that beach, don’t. They have a bigger plan. They are reaching as many people as they can with whatever their message or product is. They have a much more positive goal in mind than simply becoming rich. They want to provide for their families and reach out to others all at the same time. Why are you doing this again?

Do you believe you can do it?

I have known several people who attempted to do an online business and they failed quickly. They really didn’t believe that they could do it, and /or, they didn’t really believe that anyone could do it.

If you have no faith in yourself or the business you are trying to do, you have no chance of making it. You must believe that you are not only capable, but that you have something of value to sell or to say. Without that belief, you are doomed. Do you believe in yourself and your product?

Are you willing to work at it?

You must have a positive mind set about the work involved. Ask anyone who has made it online; when you first start out, there is a lot of work involved. If you are not positive, you will fold when the going gets tough. You have to have that survivor mentality!

What now?

Come back to this site often. Learn from Angela’s experience and knowledge. Let her give you tips on how to do this! Learn to think positively! Without the right mindset, this business can be very hard. With it, you might just find yourself on the beach after all!

Podcamp Toronto 2010 – You Going?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I posted the other day about one of my favorite ways to beat the winter blahhhs is to get out to marketing and networking events and meet people. I’m pretty excited about my little mini-getaway to Toronto in two weeks to go to Podcamp Toronto 2010.

So much so in fact I did up this little video to ask “are you coming?”:

I went last year and enjoyed it a lot. I especially like meeting up with my typically ‘online friends’ and chatting live and in person. Of course I also love meeting new people too!

A few notes about podcamp:

- It’s know as an ‘unconference’ – anyone can speak there about an online marketing, podcasting, business related topic.
- It’s not all about podcasting. In fact I only remember one session actually just about podcasting.
- It’s free. No cost.

How Do You Beat Winter Blahhhhhs (Giveaway)

For most of us, the winter months can be a bit dreary. They are cold, dark, and snowy. The kind of weather that makes you want to curl up on the couch with a blanket and read a book or watch a DVD.

While that kind of behavior can be great on a weekend, it can slow your business down if you spend too much time on the couch. And if that sounds like you, I’ve got something that will help kick you into high gear.

The Winter Biz Sessions are just the motivation you need! Held every Tuesday night on a conference call from 9-10 pm Eastern, these calls will deliver plenty of business tips – and inspiration. The calls are taking place and will run through March 30, 2010.

There is a new topic and guest speaker each week. Some of the topics include How To Get More Out Of Your Business – Without Putting More Time In, Blog Touring, Starting A Freelance Career, Wholesaling Your Products, Improving Your Copywriting – And Your Sales, Earning Money As An Affiliate, and more! (Angela Wills will be leading a session on March 9).

It is only $10 for access to all of these calls. If you can’t make a live call, don’t worry; the recordings can be listened to online, as well as downloaded. For more information on the speakers and topics, and to register, click here.

Local Presentation: Blogging Tips For Business

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Yesterday I presented to a local networking group called WINGS.

My presentation was about Blogging For Business.

This is the same networking group I mentioned in a previous post.

I love to get out, away from the computer and just listen and learn from other business owners. In another post I’ll really get into the benefits I’ve felt from just getting out and talking face to face with other, varied business women.

Here’s my presentation:

Blogging For Business Presentation Benefits:

Today I wanted to mention the merits of getting out there and presenting locally. To me, there were quite a few benefits of doing a local presentation. Here they are:

- Gained Confidence: Every time I present in person I gain more confidence. On the internet there is advice and marketing tips everywhere. Offline it is more difficult to find someone who really knows and understands internet marketing. I had people in the room who didn’t understand what a blog was – it was a great feeling to help them learn more about it and how it could be helpful to their business.

- Credibility: I have been going to this particular networking group for a long time but this is only the second time I’ve presented. By putting myself in front of the group and sharing my knowledge freely I’ve gained more credibility as an expert on my topic and in my field.

- Business: There was more than one person interested in hiring me to do a blogsite design for them as a result of my presentation.

- Referrals: One of the biggest goals of the networking group is to help other women in business by passing on referrals. There is a web designer in the group who said to me she’d be happy to pass on referrals of blog design clients as she gets them as a result of hearing my presentation and understanding more about what I do.

So that’s a little update on what I’ve been up to lately. Have you ever done any local business presentations? Would you like to? Got any tips? Ideas? Comments?

I’d love to hear from you!

Yesterday I wrote a quick post about understanding who you are working with in your online business and being careful who you take counsel from.

Will Bontrager posted such a well thought out reply that seemed much better deemed a guest post. So as suggested by Will he’s my newest guest here on the Marketers Mojo blog. Good idea Will!

Here are some fantastic tips on researching experts, freelancers and potential online business partners:

Researching the expert should include at least Binging or Googling the expert’s personal name and company name. If a name is more than one word, put it in quotes for the search.

Example, using my name:

“Will Bontrager”

Sometimes it happens that a name is the same as a celebrity or many people have the same name. In my case, the bicycle brand “Bontrager” may be the reason for some inappropriate results. And there is also a judge “William Bontrager” – in the same US State as where I live, no less.

Searching for the name and appending +forum or +recommend or +”not recommend” can narrow the focus. Examples:

“Will Bontrager” +forum

“Will Bontrager” +recommend

“Will Bontrager” +”not recommend”

Note: There are people who will say negative and malicious untrue things about others with the intent to ruin online reputations. If you find negative entries, it may be prudent to give the expert you are researching the opportunity to respond.

After all that, dig into the expert’s domain name.

If your domain registrar does not provide a whois lookup, you may go to http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools and use the WHOIS/IPWHOIS Lookup tool on that page. Type in the domain name.

Example, using one of my domains:

willmaster.com

Now, Bing or Google the name under the Registrant section. The address and telephone number, too, if you want to dig deeper.

(If the Registrant section is anonymous or uses an anonymous email address, consider carefully whether or not you want to do business with someone who hides who they are or where they are located. NOTE: It is common and recommended by some to record an email address different than the domain. The reason is so the registration record can be updated even if the domain web site should for some reason be unavailable.)

Another thing to check on the domain registration record is the date the domain was created. When you look at the willmaster.com registration record, you’ll see

Created on: 20-FEB-98

Consider how long the company says they have been in business and verify the domain registration creation date is consistent with that claim.

If the company does not say how long they have been in business, the domain registration creation date can be an indication, albeit not a certainty.

Thanks again Will!

Be Careful Who You Take Counsel From!

It drives me insane when I see people being taken advantage of because so called ‘experts’ give them bad advice.

So my advice to you today is be careful.

Be very careful who you take advice from. No matter what credentials they give you.

How do you protect yourself from bogus ‘Experts’? Here’s my advice:

Understand what you are hiring them to do

The biggest problem I see with people who outsource things like search engine optimization, website building or other tasks like that is they know absolutely nothing about it. Unless you have someone you trust completely (preferably someone you’ve known for a very long time) then I strongly advice against just picking an ‘expert’ and laying it all in their hands. That plan can go wrong, very wrong!

So if you’re looking for a quick fix you’ll be dissapointed. My recommendation is before you hire someone for something like SEO, email marketing, social media, websites, etc you MUST do your homework.

Don’t blindly hire out work before you understand what you are hiring them for. Spend a few hours on the internet researching what you need. Yes I know this is going to take you time but it won’t take as long as actually doing it yourself and it won’t take as long as having to hire and fire over and over again because people are not doing what you expect them to.

Many people make resolutions in early January. They resolve to eat healthier, to exercise more, spend less money, get organized, etc. You may have made resolutions like these yourself… But what about your business?

Have you made any resolutions that will help you develop a stronger business this year? Here are a few business resolutions that I recommend:

Planning For The Future – If you lived in Wisconsin and decided to go on a road trip to Texas, it would make more sense to plan your route rather than just driving south and hoping you get there. The same holds true for your business. What do you want to accomplish this year? How much would you like to make this year? Create a plan now to achieve those goals.

Promoting Your Business Regularly & Consistently – One of the questions I get asked a lot is “How much time do I need to spend on marketing?” There is no magic number. Marketing is something that needs to be done all the time. Instead of spending a lot of time on marketing in short bursts (like when you are running low on clients / customers), spend an equal amount of time on it each week of the year.

Learn New Things – When a business owner starts to see some success, they may start to feel like they know all they need to know. New technologies and ideas are always developing and it’s important to learn new things. Would your blog be more appealing if you learned how to add some video or audio? Would learning new copywriting or marketing strategies increase your sales? Of course, keep in mind that you have to implement the things you learn in order to see results!
