Why I Won’t JV With You.

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

I got this letter the other day and it’s a good example of what just gets a big ol’ delete without even a click.

Don’t ever do this ok?

So who would I JV with?

Well, honestly, I don’t promote a whole lot of stuff through affiliate marketing because:

  1. I don’t want my list to think I’m just promoting to make a buck, and I don’t want to just promote to make a buck.
  2. I am very strict about what I promote and I want to check it out first, get results and then report back to my list and subscribers.
  3. I believe too many choices leads to information overload and overwhelm. I want to give my readers only the information they need to move forward with success.

So what will get my attention as a potential JV affiliate partner?

  • If you send me an email with access to your product. The best way is a coupon code that makes me go through your order process so I can review that too.
  • If I know you or have already bought your products and you produce proven, quality stuff.

There’s no way I’m going to promote a product launch from someone I don’t know promoting a product I’ve never heard of. I care about my list and my business way too much to do that!

That’s it, pretty simple.

Making Sales: Web Content & Calls to Action

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Recently I had a client ask me to show her how to create calls to action within her content. You see she was sending me tons of articles to post on her website filled with excellent information but they had no purpose.

Content without a purpose is a true waste.

It’s a waste of time, money and effort.

You MUST lead your visitor to the next step and YES that means tell them exactly what to do with words like:

  • go here
  • click this link to..
  • get this now at…
  • sign up for x by clicking below…

Web Content Writing and Optimization Increase Business Sales

There is no exact formula that I can tell you.

This is all about creating a flow through your site that leads your visitors to a specific end result.  Not every call to action NEEDS to link to a buy now but you should always tell them what to do next. Other calls to action:

  • sign up for the newsletter
  • read more posts like this (I wouldn’t use this too much)
  • get the free sample
  • sign up for the free trial
  • check out the benefits
  • read the review
  • etc, etc, etc

Sure you can add a ton of content and wait for sales – but that’s not gonna just happen!

Think of it like this: If you had 500 TV stations but no TV GUIDE would you really spend your time flipping through those stations to find what you wanted? Most people wouldn’t have the patience and they’d probably just go read a book or do something else.

You also have to realize there are two main types of content:

  • Informative
  • Commercial

Informative web content answers a question the reader has. It gives quality info. It should lead to a next step but most often doesn’t lead to a direct sale. An example might be if someone were looking for information on how to live gluten-free. They may not want to buy anything. If there was good information on how to live gluten-free, they’ll take it and leave if there is no call to action. But – what if you told them you would give them some awesome gluten-free recepies – all they had to do was sign up below. Then you’d have their attention and you could repeatedly contact them – you’d send them good receipes but you’d also send links to where they would buy special gluten-free ingredients (with your affiliate link embedded!)

Commercial articles are the money articles. These are the articles for people who are ready to buy. For example that same person on a gluten-free diet may be looking for specialty foods to buy online. So they type words into the search engines that help them find what they are looking for. Maybe they want to know ‘where to buy gluten-free specialty foods’. So in response you write a commercial article that is informative and leads them to a specific place where they can find exactly what they are looking for and you can make a commission.

[credit must go to Lynn Terry here for the categories of informative vs commercial articles/posts]

It’s really important that when you craft each article you decide what it’s purpose is. Creating articles just to populate your website is NOT an affiliate marketing plan.

You also need to watch your website tracking.

You need calls to action but they’re not going to get anyone to buy if you don’t have enough visitors. To get good search engine rankings of you ‘money pages’ (those commercial posts) you’ll also need incoming links to the specific pages.

Social media is a start but you can get links from many websites and you’ll want to make sure you have a link building plan and are continually building links to the pages you want to rank well.

Here are some examples of calls to action:

Basically what it comes down to is advertising. A call to action is an ad within your content. But if it’s a highly relevant ad then your readers will happily check out what you are suggesting.

Other tips:

  1. You can simply use hyperlinks (that is links on words like this: affiliate marketing) on words that will grab people’s curiosity or tell them more about a product, topic, etc.
  2. One call to action is not always enough. You may want to tell them, give them more information and then tell them again within the same page.
  3. Always, always, always match the content perfectly to the offer. This is really key. Relevant offers make sales. You’re not out to change someone’s mind. You’re out to meet them where they’re at and provide them with what they’re looking for.
  4. Use internal links to pull people through your own website. Link to relevant pages when it’s appropriate.

So that’s how write and optimize your web content to make sales online. There’s no one sweeping formula here. The key is to create content that fits fantastic-ly with your readers and provides them with the further resources they need – be it a product, a report, a newsletter or whatever.

p.s. The post you just read was definitely an informative post. You probably weren’t looking specifically to buy anything when you started reading it. None the less I’m going to tell you about further reading I highly recommend if you want to make your way in the world as an affiliate marketer. It’s Rosalind Gardner’s Super Affiliate Handbook and it’s kinda like the bible of affiliate marketing. Calls to action work but there’s a lot more to it – check it out by clicking here.

The other day I got a great question from Marya of Sales Copywriting about affiliate marketing guilt and I asked her if I could share my answers here.

It’s about making affiliate marketing referrals and experiencing guilt as a result, instead of just using a straight, non-affiliate link.

I think you’ll find this conversation helpful if you yourself experience any affiliate marketing referral guilt.

Question: Affiliate Guilt

“How do you get over affiliate guilt?”

“Every time I try affiliate marketing, I always feel as if I’m doing something sneaky. My *head* tells me that it’s totally ethical, but I also feel like I should be recommending things with no strings attached. (In fact, half the time, I don’t use my affiliate links at all!)

It’s a really weird psychological thing… And I think when one is not comfortable with affiliate marketing, it shows in one’s articles and posts. I’m terribly reserved and British about it – and I wish I could get past that, because I *really* need to make a secondary passive income!

Any thoughts?”

Short Answer: Get Over It ;)

Don’t Let Affiliate Marketing Referral Guilt Stop You

Angela’s Reply:
That’s not a dumb question AT ALL and I bet there are a lot of people wondering the same thing.

I think you sometimes read the guru marketers and respected marketers say that they’re recommending something and NOT using their affiliate link like there is something wrong with using it. I think that gives affiliates a bad name even though they’re trying to show how credible they are by saying “look I’m telling you something good and I’m not even getting paid for it”.

But I look at it this way: If your potential customers, clients, subscribers, readers etc trust you then they trust you, period. I don’t feel I need to prove my worth by not using an affiliate link. I feel if I run my business ethically and honestly and stress my intentions then my following can decide if they want to believe me or not. It’s kind of out of my hands after that point. I don’t worry if they feel tricked because I clearly am providing a service by saving them the time of researching something for themselves. If they resent the fact that I’m making money from all the work, effort and experience I have then they’re not someone I want to do business with anyway.

How do I recommend you change your mindset about affiliate marketing being unethical? Write yourself up a list of why you think it’s NOT unethical. Here’s something to get you started:

- You are providing a service to the customer by researching and recommending products.
- You are providing a service to the company by connecting them with their idea customers.
- You are honestly and ethically doing your due dilligence in recommending only high quality stuff.
- You accept and openly correct any issues you find with anything you recommend.
- You have specific experience and skills that took you years to develop and in sharing that you are saving your affiliate customers time AND money.

Another thing to remember – you are NOT the same as the sleezy internet marketers who promote crap just for a buck. You are someone with ethics and honesty and over time will develop a following who respects and admires that in you.

I hope that helps :)

You’ve heard me mention Rosalind Gardner on the blog before, she’s the affiliate marketing queen and author of the Super Affiliate Handbook.

Well, the new year is here and lots of marketer’s make predictions this time of year. I came across this video by Rosalind that she posted just a few days ago about internet & affiliate marketing predictions.

Why I Finally Choose an Affiliate Marketing Career

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

I’m not sure how long you’ve been reading my blog. If you’re a new reader – welcome!

If you’ve been following my escapades for a while (thank you!) then you’ll know this is not my first business. I have been a soapmaker, a securities salesperson, an information marketer, a virtual assistant, an affiliate manager, a candle salesperson and a few more.

The common thread about every single one of those businesses is that I never considered the lifestyle I wanted when I choose them.

Why I Choose Affiliate Marketing

affiliate-marketingAfter many years of experimenting with various businesses I got a real good idea of what I DIDN’T want from a business. I developed a uniquely personal set of things I did want from a business that were important to me and with each new business I got closer to that goal:

- Travel not required
- Freedom built in
- Work now, profit now AND later
- No need to build a team
- Low expenses
- Unlimited opportunity

Affiliate marketing satisfies all of these requirements. I recently read on Rosalind Gardner’s blog (one of my affiliate marketing hero’s!) that she just turned 50. I’m 33. It’s so exciting for me to think where I will be in 17 years from the efforts of my affiliate marketing. I don’t know when Rosalind started her business but I know that affiliate marketing is something that’s effort is compounded as time goes by.

I remember when I first explained affiliate marketing to my father. He related it to an insurance salesman. The insurance salesman gets a commission from every insurance policy he sells. In the beginning it might be tough but over the years the results of that effort add up. The same is true for affiliate marketing, especially when you choose to promote affiliate programs with residual commissions and long-term customers.

Affiliate marketing fits the lifestyle I want to have. I mean who doesn’t want to have time freedom and commissions coming in long after the work has been completed? Yes the results are awesome but also the means to achieve those results are very attractive to me as well.

How Do I Plan to Successfully Make Affiliate Sales?

Sure, the results of many businesses sound great but it’s the work itself and your ability to get ‘er done that really determine success. I’m sure the work I need to put in to be a successful and even a ‘super’ affiliate are something I will enjoy and continue with long-term.

Here are just some of the things I’d consider important to long term affiliate marketing success:
1. Persistence – You gotta do more than the average affiliate and that means being persistent and consistent in your marketing efforts.
2. Communication – I’ll be communicating with my readers here through the blog, in my email messages, through article marketing, through my podcast and more all in an effort to provide the best help I can to those who are on the same path I am in their work at home careers.
3. Planning – Oh yes I’m getting so much better at planning. I’ve listed out all the programs I’d like to promote here on Marketers Mojo and I’ve also started a Blogging, Email Marketing & Article Marketing Calendar to plan out my content and promotions (thanks to the advice and challenges over at Lynn Terry’s Elite Membership)

Are You Still Deciding?

So I guess my question to you right now is why did you choose the business you are doing right now? Did you think about it or just dive in? Is it really suiting your lifestyle needs?

Ok so that’s three questions.

Maybe you haven’t decided on a business yet. If not, good! Now you have the opportunity to really design a business that fits a lifestyle goal that will bring you what you truly want.

I know thinking about the lifestyle my current efforts will support keeps me motivated and excited about the little details that I need to take daily to get to my bigger goals!

New FTC Laws to Change the Face of Internet Marketing?

Print30 Printable PDF Version

I’m sure you’ve noticed there’s a lot buzz about the new FTC laws coming into affect starting at the end of this year. These laws may affect many of us online marketers and we should at the very least get familiar with what it’s all about.

The basic idea behind the new updates relates to advertising, product endorsement and testimonials – requiring the presentation of what is being represented is accurate, true and not deceitful.

You can find the official 81 page goverment pdf doc here.

ftc-updatesOver the last week or so I’ve been collecting opinions and blog posts on how this will affect my business, your business and the face of internet marketing.

Let me just give you a summary of what I got out of everything I read.

Also, as always, I invite you to add your comments and opinions in the comment section below.

Create an Enticing Event to Attract Sales & Affiliates

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

spotlightI recently got a question from one of my customers about how to attract more affiliates.

She works for a successful online marketer who is doing all the right things with her affiliate program. She has great products, affiliates who are already successful and lots of great promotional tools.

In order to boost the program’s success and get more sales this affiliate manager was looking at adding more affiliates to her program (a common goal for most affiliate managers). So she did what many people do to find new affiliates and started emailing potential partners who would be a great fit. The response just wasn’t good.

I’m not surprised. Read More→

One of the biggest stalling points for many a new affiliate marketer is getting the actual affiliate website up and running.

As an affiliate marketer, you want a content management system (aka website) that makes it easy for you to add new information and promote new products. You also don’t want to spend forever trying to figure out what that is.

My solution for you – WordPress.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.

More simply, WordPress is what you use when you want to work with your blogging software, not fight it.

That’s the definition straight from WordPress.org.

Want to see what you can do with it?

Here’s a new blog I’m playing around with as a potential affiliate site, it’s one of a few niche sites I own and run on WordPress:

affiliate-vw-blog

This website right here is built on WordPress as well. My professional speaker’s website, SpeakerSuccessOnline.com is another one. Here are a couple more:
AngelaWills.com
AffiliatesMojo.com

And of course I’ve also built dozens of sites for clients through my service available at BlogSiteMojo.com.

So, yea, I like WordPress. I use it on almost every single website I create and will continue to do so because it’s easy, fast, intuitive and always getting better. That means I can focus on creating quality content, products and resources that serve my market rather than trying to get the darned stuff out there.

How Do You Start Your Own WordPress Affiliate Site?

Here’s a brief description of what you need to do:

1. Get website hosting with Fantastico or Simple Scripts for click and go easy WordPress installation – I promise it’s easy to install if you get hosting with one of these! I recommend Bluehost for hosting which has easy installation and a handy control panel.

2. Install & Customize WordPress. WordPress straight out of the box does need a little tweaking. If you’re not comfortable with this you can hire a Virtual Assistant to help you or hire a blogsite service to set it all up for you.

3. Start Promoting Your Affiliate Programs. The beauty of wordpress is that it is set up in such a way that it helps you get found easier by the search engines and it is very easy to use once you get the hang of it. You won’t have to wait for a website designer to do updates and you won’t have to buy a crazy expensive program like Dreamweaver to do it yourself.

You can grab a copy of my completely free ecourse on How to Create a WordPress Website in 7 Days or Less and you can also learn and awful lot from WordPress.org.

How did I learn?

I have to admit that even though I had built websites for many years before using WordPress, the thought of this CMS (content management system) on a blogging platform was intimidating to me. That’s why I choose to learn by having someone walk me through the whole process. Having someone walk you through or even do it for you takes all the pressure off, saves time hunting around (and potentially grabbing the wrong information) and gets it accomplished fast so you can move on to making money through affiliate programs.

So if you’re ready to get moving forward on your own affiliate marketing my recommendation to you is choose your system (I recommend WordPress ;) ) and then just dive into it. Once you’ve got a website you can quickly and easily update you’ll have no more barriers to making a great income as an affiliate marketer.

p.s. If you learn best through video then I recommend you check out the Blogging Starter Pack by Lynette Chandler. Lynette has been a friend, mentor and colleague for years now and when it comes to WordPress she also knows her stuff.

Got my first Ask Angela Question and it’s a simple but great question:

I want to know is there a place I can go to study up on Affiliate programs. I do not really understand it.”

Affiliate Marketing is a hot topic and no doubt you have heard of it if you are into online marketing. But where can you go to learn more and know you’re getting quality, trusted information?

I’ve got a number of recommendations for you here:

1. Super Affiliate Handbook (aff link) – Rosalind Gardner knows affiliate marketing. I like to call her handbook the ‘bible’ of affiliate marketing. It’s something I recommend to all my coaching clients and customers of affiliate management. Before the summer is out I’ll be reading Rosalind’s handbook again and this time I’ll do up a proper review of it to let you know more about what makes it so awesome.

Rosalind also has a blog too, NetProfitsToday.com

For now, here’s a video from Rosalind called ‘Affiliate Marketing Simplified’:

2. Shawn Collins – Shawn knows affiliate marketing. He is the co-founder of Affiliate Summit, one of the biggest affiliate marketing conferences. Shawn also has a feature called ‘Ask Shawn’ where he will answer your affiliate marketing questions.

3. Associate Programs – Allan Gardyne’s site is full of useful information on affiliate programs and affiliate marketing.

4. RIGHT HERE – As I’m ramping up for my upcoming Affiliate Commotion membership program and focusing more on providing information to those who want to be affiliate managers I will be focusing a lot more on affiliate marketing, affiliate programs and affiliate management right here on this blog. You can also sign up for a free course on how to run your own affiliate program by visiting AffiliateCommotion.com now.

I also provide a training course for those who want to become affiliate managers for small business owners. It’s called Affiliate Manager Training School.

5. Affiliate Classroom Magazine, Free – I saw Anik Singal at Affiliate Incubator in Dallas, Texas. He has grown a very successful business around the topic of affiliate marketing and has a top information for anyone wanting to know more about affiliate programs.

6. Affiliate Marketing Forums – There are a number of forums dedicated to affiliate marketing. Spending time there can help you learn more about affiliate programs from the people in the trenches and also make valuable networking connections. ABestWeb.com is a very popular affiliate marketing forum.

That should get you started with Affiliate Programs and Affiliate Marketing! Yes it’s a big topic so just take it a bite at a time and you’ll start getting the hang of it.

Another thing I would suggest is start joining affiliate programs of interest to you. There’s no better way to learn than to just jump right in there and start checking things out from the inside.

How To Become A Super Affiliate

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

banner-468x60

Affiliate marketing is a very viable strategy for making real money on the internet.

The first step to becoming a highly successful affiliate is finding a niche that is interested and a product that you really believe in.

By doing some diligent research you will find a great number of affiliate programs that provide some top tools and resources for you to promote and make money with their Read More→

Well I’ve finally had some time to get back, catch my breath and take some time to write a bit of a review on the whole Affiliate Incubator Seminar 2008!

I had a fantastic time meeting so many great people at the Affiliate Incubator seminar. As I suspected there really is nothing like meeting people face to face and building real relationships.

Learning Affiliate Marketing

There was so much at the event to learn that there’s really no way I could type it all up here, so let me tell you a few key points I took away:

Remember What You’re Doing This For

One of my absolute favorite speeches of the whole event was by the co-owner of Traffic Geyser, Frank Sousa. I don’t think Frank talked as much about internet marketing or how to build your business as he did talk about the importance of goals and determination – at least that what I heard the most of, probably because it really hit with me. Instead, he talked about his history and how he was absolutely determined to build a business and have the real freedom that comes from being your own boss.

Frank also talked about how important family is to him and that he’s so happy to have a business that allows him the ability to take off next week and go on a cruise with his three grandsons, or that he now has the ability to give back and really make a difference to others.

The speech really meant a lot to me and I related to so much of what Frank was talking about, like; never give up; help others as well as yourself; value your family and so much more.

If Your Business is Too Complicated, You’re Making it Too Complicated!

I believe Russell Brunson said this and it really stuck with me because at times I think I make things in my own business much too complicated and also I work with a number of clients who tend to over-complicate as well. I think it’s something a lot of us do and it really does hinder our success.

I came back from the event with a new determination to simplify my business and cut out the complications.

There is Nothing Like Real People

Yes, of course, you’re real and I’m real. But reading words on your screen or hearing my voice over the phone just doesn’t compare to meeting people in person.

Here’s a photo of a few great ladies I met over the weekend:

affiliate incubator friends

From left to right:
Patricia Williams, me, Rene Lee & Janice Bird

On the flight back I had plenty to think about and plan for my business. I took this terrible shot of an interesting ipod machine. I’ve never seen anything like this here in Canada. It’s basically a vending machine for ipods and tech equipment, very cool! I was so tempted to just buy something to see how it works:

So in summary I would definitely recommend anyone in internet marketing or with an online business get out to some relevant events where you can network with people in your industry. I would also recommend you check out what Russell and Stu are up to because they really know what they’re talking about.
