Blogging Survival Tips For Summer

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

pre-written blog posts

Summer is finally here and that means that life is going to get a little crazy!

If you have kids, they are going to be getting out of school for the summer very soon (if they’re not out already.)

And soon, your schedule is going to be full of graduations, family reunions, weddings, backyard barbecues, and weekend getaways.

Finding the time to blog is going to be a little hard! But don’t worry – you can survive the summer, and so can your blog, by using these tips:

1. Write extra posts now, and then post date them throughout the summer

2. Find guest bloggers. Have them send you their posts, and you can publish (and post date) as necessary.

3. Recycle Your Old Posts - Create new posts based on a theme, and link back to your old posts.

For example, if you have a crafty blog, your theme could be “Best Summer Craft Ideas.” If you have a parenting blog, it could be “Keeping Your Kids Busy This Summer,” or if you have a cooking blog, it could be “5 Easy No-Cook Recipes.”

4. Use Pre-Written Blog Posts! My colleague Crissy Herron has quite a few packs of pre-written blog posts that you can download and post on your blog. They are ready-to-use and super easy!

You get 10 posts per pack, and for a limited time, when you buy 1 pack, you will get one free! That’s 20 pre-written blog posts for only $10.

She’s got blog posts on all types of topics – from organic gardening to planning a wedding to online marketing and more!

To see the full list of blog post packs and to purchase them, visit: Pre-Written Blog Posts

p.s. You’ve heard me talk about PLR here and these pre-written posts are the same idea. You have the right to post them, edit them, update them and use them as your own without any author credit.

Blog Site Mojo Makeover

Monday, March 8th, 2010

If you’ve been reading my blog for any amount of time now you’ll know I love WordPress for websites, blogs, content management systems and just about any type of site.

That’s why I still do website designs over at www.BlogSiteMojo.com. I just love seeing a new site come together and, even better, hand it over to a new owner with a big vision.

Well over the weekend I did a big of an extreme makeover on my design site. I think the new look is much more representative of what I can offer and what people can expect from a WordPress website.

Anyway just wanted to do a quick post and share the before and after with you:

BEFORE
AFTER

So what do you think?

Blog SEO Case Study

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

In November I made it my goal to get top 3 for ‘audio acrobat review’ and ‘audio acrobat’.

So I wrote an ‘audio acrobat review‘ and then I started building links back to the specific page that the review was on using the linking text ‘audio acrobat review’.

I got the links from:
- article marketing (a few articles)
- guest blogging (a couple of blogs)
- blog comments (a few I think)
- youtube (just one link – video)
- scribd (just one link)
- slideshare (just one link)

I think I probably could do more but getting backlinks to specific pages takes a lot of focus and effort. Here are my current standings for those two keywords as of today:

According to Yahoo Site Explorer I have 19 inbound links:

You can find out how many inbound links your site has by going to Yahoo.com and typing in the following (with your own domain or web page URL):
link:http://www.marketersmojo.com/4009/audio-acrobat-review

So my 19 links don’t seem to be enough for a top three ranking so I’ll have to continue to work on this.

It might appear to be an aweful lot of effort to put into just one page. Well, it is. This internet marketing stuff really is work but right now I’m getting an average of 1.25 sign ups per month. On each of those sign ups I get recurring commissions. So if I keep up my efforts up I may be able to double, triple or more that sign up rate and have a truly passive income building from JUST ONE PAGE.

Are you starting to believe SEO really is worth it?

I’m really excited to share with you that I’m a new contributing writing at Contentrix.com!

If you’ve never been to the site it was started by Alice Seba, my first ever online business mentor. Anyway, suffice to say I’m an Alice Seba fan ;)

So, back to my gig.

Angela’s First Web Content Writing Post at Contentrix:

My first post is out today and it’s called:

Who Are You Talking To?

Monday, March 1st, 2010

One of the hardest things about blogging is connecting personally with your readers.

It’s a common issue because we all want hundreds or even thousands of visitors and we try to talk to them all at once. The problem is there’s no way you can relate to a thousand personalities all at once. They are so different, so varied and so unique that it’s just not possible.

Sure, you can hit on a few things they might relate to but sometimes it’s hard to even know where to start when you are trying to relate to a BIG group.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the people who relate to my blog and really getting down to the individual personality types who will relate to what I blog about.

Here’s what I’ve come up with in terms of who I’m talking to here at Marketers Mojo:

- If you run a business from home…..I’m talking to you.

- If you’re having a hard time balancing a business budget…..I’m talking to you.

- If you’re a mom who never again wants to hear: “No, you can’t take off work to go to that Christmas Concert” (field trip, etc)…..I’m talking to you.

- If you’re a stressed out, over-worked, tired and frustrated service-based business owner…..I’m talking to you.

- If you’re tired of living your life based on making other people happy (ie. you people please)…..I’m talking to you.

- If you’re wondering if you can actually run a profitable business, be a good person and never compromise in your ethics…..I’m talking to you.

I know keeping clear on this will help me relate to the people who read this blog and vice versa. I’m sure you don’t want to read a blog with broad generalizations all across the board, you want to know someone is blogging about YOUR situation, YOUR feelings and YOUR circumstances.

That’s what I aim to do here at Marketers Mojo so we can all continue to grow our businesses into awesome extensions of a life we love.

Blogging – Whatcha Doing That For?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

With all the social media hoop-la lately there seems to be much less of a focus on blogs and blogging for business. Even this past weekend as I attended Podcamp Toronto many of the sessions were on Social Media, Twitter, Facebook and Building Online Communities.

Now I’m not against social media at all but I am still very partial to building a community on MY website. That’s why I think blogging is still a largely important task for many business owners promoting something online.

Why Should I Blog?

With that being said, blogging for the sake of blogging is a mistake. You must know why you are blogging. I’ve worked with clients who’ve set up websites and blogs that have hundreds of pages with no results. The reason being is they never really understood why they were blogging in the first place.

In order to make more sense of why someone should blog, let’s look at some of the ways you can make money blogging:

- Sell a physical product.
- Sell a service.
- Sell an information product.
- Sell a product as an affiliate (physical or digital).
- Sell advertising.

That’s about all I can think of at the moment.

Not only is it important that you know how you are going to make money with your blog but you need to know how you will call your readers to take action.

Let me give you and example by using my own blog here at Marketers Mojo. My goal is to help my readers make an income doing what they love and in turn make myself a full time income through affiliate marketing. Now to do that I know I need to do my keyword research, write relevant posts, provide useful information and then lead my readers on to the next step.

In my case the next step is going to be either:
1. Sign up for my email list (or one of my number of email lists).
2. Click to buy a product I recommend.
3. (Coming Soon) Sign up for a webinar I’m offering.

With that information in mind I craft my posts around useful, helpful business products that help online business owners have a less stressful business. Then I link over to am appropriate free email list, product review, post or product website directly to send my readers on to the next step.

It’s not an overly complicated plan but it is a plan. Actually simple plans are usually the best. All I’m saying is that you must have a plan with your blog. What do you plan to achieve. And then you must believe in that plan and go after it.

Blogging to me is a conversation and every day I love connecting with people. It’s always a thrill to know that something I write or offered inspired or helped someone else in their business. Think about your reasons for blogging and then make them happen and I’m sure you’ll get the same rewarding feeling out of the blogging you do for your business.

It just never ends, does it? You just get one blog post up, and you have to start the next one. Or you need an article (or three, or seven) to use for marketing your business. Or you need a press release to announce your new product. Or your podcast is 5 days past due. (Yes, podcasts are content, too!) The list of content an online business needs is endless.

And if you’re like most people, your motivation for writing is in short supply. You may have even said once or twice, “I hate to write.”

Even I have to go in search of my missing mojo occasionally, and I write for a living! So don’t beat yourself up if you sometimes feel less than creative.

There are some things you can do to get your writing mojo back, though—or at least get it to show up for a limited engagement once in a while.

I Hate to Write

We all hate to write sometimes. First, change your attitude. You’ve probably heard the expression “fake it til you make it.” Don’t scoff. It works! Tell yourself you love to write enough times, and eventually even you will begin to believe it. While you’re at it, put a smile on your face next time you see your sister-in-law. Fake it til you make it works to quell family drama, too.

I Don’t Have Time to Write

Woody Allen said “Eighty percent of success is showing up” and that’s as true of writing as anything. Every day—preferably at the same time—sit down at your computer and write.

Note that research is not writing. Neither is forum participation, Tweeting, surfing Facebook, or checking email. Open a text document and begin to type. That’s writing. Do this every day at the same time and after a few weeks it will be so ingrained you would no more dream of skipping your daily writing time than you would forgo brushing your teeth before bed.

Aside from developing the writing habit, there’s another reason to write every day. You know how when you put something off–like laundry or bookkeeping–and it piles up and piles up and piles up and pretty soon you don’t even know where to start and you’re so overwhelmed you have to go take a nap before you can even think about it?

Well, that’s what happens when you put off creating content, too. You get this huge pile of stuff you have to write, and while you’re busy stressing over it more stuff is being added to the pile.

But if you just sit down every day and write one thing–just one thing–you’ll never find yourself trying to pound out seven blog posts, three articles, and four weeks of newsletters in a single afternoon. You’ll have a lot more free time if you just make content creation a priority in the first place rather than pushing it off until the last minute.

I Don’t Know What to Write About

Always be on the lookout for things to write about. Here is where you get to lounge about on forums, seeing what people are talking about. You can search Twitter for interesting topics and set up Google alerts for your keywords. Keep a notebook or smart phone or some other recording device with you all the time. You never know when inspiration will strike, so you need to be ready to grab it when it does.

Now when you sit down to write you won’t spend the first 20 minutes casting about for something to write about. Just get out your list, pick a topic, and go.

Will all this help you win a Pulitzer Prize? Probably not. But it will help you improve your sales. More content equals more traffic, more newsletter subscribers, more podcast listeners, and that adds up to more profit in your pocket. How can you say you hate that?

What Is An RSS Feed & How Do You Use It?

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Let’s explain RSS and how to use it by comparing it to what you know.

Right now, if you are brand new to RSS and have not subscribed to my RSS feed then you have to visit my website every time you want to read it.

rss-feedUsually your visits to my site will be totally random. Maybe you’ll come back daily to see if I made any new posts, maybe you’ll come back once a week or whenever the mood strikes. Of course you can bookmark my site here at MarketersMojo to find it easier but it is still up to you to remember to visit.

How RSS Feed Works

By comparison, an RSS feed lets you instantly find out when I have new blog posts available for you to read.

Here’s how it works:

1. You find my RSS Feed on my website.
2. You choose to subscribe using what is called a feed reader.
3. You read the blog posts as they are updated.

A feed reader is basically a ‘home’ for all the feeds you subscribe to. They are collected in your feed reader and then when you open it up all your newest feeds are there are ready for you to read.

There are many feed readers out there. A couple of popular feed readers are:
Google Reader
FeedDemon

So, just to reiterate, here is how an rss feed works:

An RSS feed allows you to subscribe to a website without having to go to that website. With your feed reader that you open up while connected to the internet you can have all the blogs and websites (with RSS) you want to read delivered to YOU instead of having to go out surfing the net to read them. Your feed reader will update automatically whenever there is a new post or new content, letting you get all the information you want to receive in one, central location.

Handy, huh?

Here’s a screenshot of the feed reader I use, FeedDemon:

what-is-rss

Basically an RSS feed is an easy way for you to keep up to date on your favorite blogs all in one spot. I love using my RSS feed to get some incoming links through other high quality blogs I love to read. Saves me time and helps me grow my business all at once!

Angela Wills

p.s. Now that you know how to use RSS feeds of course I want to invite you to sign up to the Marketers Mojo RSS feed by clicking here.

Or you can get on the Marketers Mojo Email list for post updates and great info on how to love your business, love your life. You’re privacy is completely protected! Enter your name and email below to get on the list:

Writing Advice and Tips – Write What You Know

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

The blog has been quiet for the last few days. It’s because I’ve been spending the last few nights writing the newest report, Market from the HEART, and I just didn’t have any ideas left on what to write for the blog.

1228656_pencilsBecoming a professional blogger is definitely a new challenge for me. I’ve been told I’m a great writer but I usually don’t feel like a writer at all.

Writing Advice and Tips from TV

It’s funny that tonight I’ve had the TV on and was watching the show ‘Being Erica‘. Erica goes to a publisher looking to get her book published and the advice she got was ‘write what you know‘. I thought that was good advice and went on about my night. Read More→

How I Made Money… Blogging

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

In September I did my first post in a series called ‘How I Made Money‘. I thought it would be helpful to explain to people who ask what I do to explain specific actions I’ve taken over the years to make money online.

Today’s topic is How I Made Money….Blogging.

make-money-bloggingBlogging is one of my favorite ways to make money online. It’s taken some playing around with blogging and a number of different sites to find my ‘blogging voice’ and to feel really comfortable with how I blog. Even then sometimes I feel like I don’t know what to blog about.

But let’s get right to it with how I made money blogging.

Blogging is just another way to get your message out to the masses. It’s a way to target a specific group of readers and to build a relationship with them.

Of course this blog right here is an example of that. Read More→

Instantly Boost Sales and Opt-ins With Action Popup

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

action-popup

You know how important building an opt-in list is to your success online. The majority of visitors to your website just won’t purchase on their first visit. Without a backup plan you’ll lose them forever.

Action Popup to the rescue,

A popup is a smaller window that appears on a sales page where you convince a visitor to opt-in to your newsletter so you can contact them later with a special offer. If they buy from you right away, great! If not, you can remind them to come back at a later date.

* Problem: Popups and newsletter forms on sales pages decrease conversion rates. Read More→

How Do I Start a Blog?

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Starting your own blog on your own hosting involves a little setup. It’s really not overly difficult and there are even some hosting companies that will set up your blog for free. Here are step by step directions on how to start your own blog with an email host using WordPress.

Step 1: Install Blog

BLOGInstall blog using Fantastico or Simple Scripts available in your hosting control panel. If you don’t have a host yet, I recommend and use Bluehost for all my websites (very affordable and reliable host).

If you host has Fantastico or Simple Scripts then installing a blog is a fairly easy and quick thing to do. What you do is login to your web site’s control panel, and find the smiley face, the Fantastico Icon, and click on it. You’ll see a section in most control panels for WordPress, click on it. When I first learned to build my own website in 1999 I used a completely free service. At the time I didn’t even have a business.

Yep, that’s right. My idea of a fun time was building websites, with CODE, from SCRATCH! How ya like me now? ;)

my-own-website-totally-freeSo when people ask me how they can start out and make their own website, totally free, I do understand where they are coming from.

I do have to caution you though, if you are in business it’s almost always better to go for professional resources to build your website. In the case of website hosting, domain names and email address you certainly get what you pay for.

When you decide to go the ‘free’ route you will often get unwanted advertisements, less control and lower quality results then you would get had you paid for them.

With that said, everyone needs to start somewhere!

Here are my suggestions for starting your website for free. Please keep in mind that I haven’t used ANY free website services for many, many years now so you’ll want to check into these yourself and find the best fit for you:
