Wondering if I have sucker written on my forehead this week.
After the last post you enjoyed I thought you’d like this one too. Came to my inbox asking me if I’d buy a whole bunch of email lists from them if I’m in need of increasing my ROI.
Of course I need to increase my ROI but I certainly don’t want to buy your massive lists – that’s spam!
Have a peek if you like. Here’s what I can buy:

I know most of you know this but let me tell you why this is a really bad idea:
1. You need to legally get permission from the user to add them to any type of automated email list. I don’t have their permission.
2. Even IF these users somehow gave a big blanket permission statement saying that anyone can send them any crap they feel like that still sucks because they’re going to be so inundated with crap my GOOD stuff would just get totally lost in the shuffle. That would be a shame and being associated with a bunch of people promoting like hell is not what I want my business to represent.
3. Numbers lie. I have a list of just over 1000 right now. I have built that list and cared for that list and made mistakes but they’re still here – you’re still here. That’s because you know I’m real, we have built up trust and a relationship. To that list of 100k or whatever I am nobody and my response with them if I ever wanted to email them would be a teeny tiny itsy bittsy portion of what I can get from a list that (hopefully) loves me!
So there you go – buying email lists is a bad business investment. People need to make a concious decision to get the information from you or it will be completely worthless to them.
You can’t buy attention – you must earn it.

Man I’ve been seriously, seriously slack on my blog posting here for a few weeks now!
I honestly don’t know what happened. I’ve just not felt like posting. Maybe because I’ve been pretty busy promoting, preparing and welcoming some awesome students to my Website Design Mojo program which started yesterday. Maybe because I just needed a blogging rest.
But whatever, I’m back! I’ll be back later with more thoughtfull and action-provoking posts but for now I wanted to show you something real cool.
If you are sending emails to people who use Gmail (I do, I do!) then you can use it to embed youtube videos right into your emails. I’m assuming this works just for people who are receiving with Gmail but I haven’t looked into that part. But I know that there are enough business people using Gmail on a regular basis for me to take note!
I see this being a very useful way to grab a little more attention. You could use it to:
- Promote a newsletter.
- Promote a product.
- Show a demo.
I added my Dear Guru, Dear Guru video to my email signature and sent myself a test. Here’s what it looks like:

So when the reader clicks on the video play button it opens up and plays right in Gmail – cool, cool stuff!
Gotta love Google!

p.s. You know that Website Design coaching program I’ve been rambling about? Well it *almost* sold out on it’s first go-around! There are already 6 people on the waiting list for my next session. So if you want to learn how to make a WordPress website I suggest you check it out and sign up for the webinar to get the recording and get on the email notification list. Next class starts in September: http://www.WebsiteDesignMojo.com
If you’ve been reading here at Marketers Mojo for anytime you’ve probably heard about Aweber, my favorite email service provider.
Well, I really enjoy their blog. The advice and information I receive on email marketing is really invaluable. Earlier this week I noticed a post on the Aweber blog asking readers to create a video about why they love Aweber.
Here’s mine:

p.s. By the way, if you like doing video or are interested in getting started with video then you’ll love the podcast I’ve got coming up next week about Vlogging! check back by Tuesday
I just did some research before writing this post about found a whole bunch of results for people who are looking to buy email lists. Spammers building huge, useless, annoyed and angry lists of people who don’t want to buy from them.
That’s not what smart marketers do.
Years ago I got a job at Consumer’s Distributing (Canadians, remember that place?). Well I didn’t actually work for the company, I worked for one of those in-store credit card companies where I jumped on people (not literally) as soon as they walked in the door. My job was simple – get them to sign up for a credit card.
So people are coming in the door expecting to get their product order but instead are getting hounded to get another credit card. Sure it might ’seem’ targeted because they were coming in to buy something but in reality they knew what they were looking for when they came in the door and it wasn’t a credit card.
That’s why targeting is so important whether it be online or offline. Sure you can have the ‘hunter’ mentality if you like and work like hell to convert a percentage of the untargeted people into buyers – that’s the hard way. The easier way is to find people who are looking for something very specific and then give it to them.
One of the best ways to reach your target market online is to provide them with information via email. No matter what you may have heard about the latest and greatest social media methods, email marketing is NOT dead. In fact, marketing with email is still one of the best ways to have the full attention of the people you’re serving.
My message here at Marketers Mojo is all about using the technology of the internet to run your business smoother and help you create true freedom. That’s why I’ve created a number of targeted email marketing lists on various topics, including:
Each list has a specific topic and that is certainly by design. By having highly targeted lists I can offer quality targeted information and when I make offers they can also be very targeted.
Another important thing to remember when you have multiple targeted email lists is that they are all running 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. That means that I can be constantly marketing my business through multiple channels to hundreds or even thousands of people all at once.
By the way, if you haven’t started your email marketing list yet I highly recommend Aweber. As a friend of mine recently said you might as well start with Aweber because you’ll end up there anyway (they’re the best!). You can start with a free trial for just $1:

I’m working on not working so hard.
It’s hard work.
You know?
It almost seems easy to get caught up in all the stuff and end up wasting so much time.
One of the things I’ve been working hard to build up is passive income. There are many ways to do that but today I want to share with you one of my absolute favorite ways – automatic email responders or autoresponders.
An autoresponder is an email that goes out automatically in response to someone signing up to my list.
I currently have nine email lists and every one of them is set up with a series of follow-up autoresponder emails.
My goal with each autoresponder series is to provide excellent quality information that makes a difference in the lives of those who read and put them to use. I’m talking quality here, on auto-pilot.
Here’s a screen shot of my Aweber account and the current lists I have set up:

My goal is to have a minimum of THREE YEARS of weekly emails set up in each of these lists (except my main list which gets a monthly autoresponder). That means I will have 156 automatic emails per list.
You can see this is work. And it takes work to get passive income. But the results of that work is going to pay off for many years to come – I really like that.

p.s. If you don’t yet have a program that can host your email autoresponders I highly recommend Aweber. See it here and get a 30 day trial for only $1:

While looking for some advice at the Elite Forum over at Self Starters Weekly Tips a few weeks ago I got a tip from a few of them members, including owner Lynn Terry, that helped me increase my email list sign ups by 500%.
To start, let me show you what the sign up form looked like before I made any changes:

Right there you see I had a boring old message and no good opt-in freebie. It was suggested to me that I test out that form and see if I could increase the sign ups.
Here’s the new form I created along with a special report that really speaks to the message of this website:

After I changed forms my sign ups have increased from 0.5% to 2.5%, that’s a 500% increase.
Here’s the screen shot from Aweber:

You can see from the screen shot that there were:
2 submissions before
18 submissions after
1260 displays before
1860 displays after
0.5% conversion before
2.5% conversion after
Why did it work? Well obviously just asking you to hand over your email and get some ‘good stuff’ wasn’t enough. I know there are opportunities everywhere to sign up for email lists – I had to let my readers know WHY mine was different, how they were going to get extra benefit and WHY they should focus their attention on the emails I send over anyone else.
The ‘after’ signup form just does that better.
This is one of the things I really love about Aweber. It is so easy to track stats. All I do is go in and read them. Aweber handles the tracking. Stats are important but most of the time we just don’t have enough hours in the day to do the stuff we already need to do, that’s why I believe having automatic stat tracking like this is just another way to work less, make more, love your business, love your life!

p.s. If you don’t already have an email list I highly recommend (and love) Aweber. It’s got a reputation for just being the top in the industry for service, use-ability and deliver-ability. Here’s the link: Aweber (that’s my affiliate link!)

I use Aweber to deliver all my emails for business. One of the things that most email service providers lack is up to date professional looking sign up forms.
Aweber is about to change that!

Try AWeber Email Marketing Risk-Free
Over the years I have built email lists in many different email marketing software programs. Some were free, some were part of a shopping carts system, and some were low priced. Once I tried Aweber, however, nothing else really compared.
Now if you’re not sure what I mean by email marketing software program (also known as email service provider) it’s a program that allows you to collect emails and then send them out in bulk.
Why not do that from your own Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo or whatever account you use?
There are a few good reasons why it’s a very bad idea not to use a well established email service provider:
1. Sending emails in bulk without having seriously good relationships with all the companies who take those emails in can get your email address blacklisted. A blacklisted email address means your messages won’t go through – they’ll get blocked. Read More→

Recently I decided to switch my email list over to Aweber. I got a few questions on why the move so I wanted to make sure I shared with you what I’m up to
I was spoiled rotten with Aweber, then went to 1SC and that was OK but not great, then WAHMCart which was a heck of a lot cheaper and easy to use but there are quite a few reasons why I ended up going back to Aweber (and I’m there to stay!).
Here’s the short list:
- Aweber has awesome stats – I can see who clicked what, I can easily see open rates and compare to other emails, I can see where people joined my list and their opt-in stats are stellar. Already since moving my list to Aweber I’ve started tracking my opt-in rate and made a change to increase it from about 2% (my guess) to 11.7%!
- Aweber has awesome deliverability.
- It was time to clean up my list – my lists were so jumbled together from being moved too much I figured it was time to do a big clean up.
- I hate that people get duplicate emails when I send them to a bunch of lists. I feel like that would be really annoying to people and wahmcart has no way to avoid that. I also love that aweber gives you the opportunity to send one email out to ALL lists at once (without duplicate emails going to the same person), something WAHMCart doesn’t do and I need that option.
- Aweber has their autoresponders set up by ‘days since last email’ and not ‘day number’.
ie. if I have 10 autoresponders and I want to move them it’s a lot more time consuming in WAHMCart or 1SC, in Aweber I simple click on the message I want to move and drag it to the spot I want it – and then it will be sent X number of days after the message before it.
- I plan on working a lot on affiliate marketing and providing a lot of autoresponders and ecourses so I needed to move to the best system I’ve ever used – which in my mind is Aweber!
I still love WAHMCart for my shopping cart. I just heard from a friend I can integrate WAHMCart with Aweber so that is great news! I will definitely continue to use WAHMCart for my shopping cart and affiliate program while using Aweber for the email contact system.
Final Verdict – It’s Aweber for me for good! I will be using Aweber for my autoresponders and broadcast newsletters from now on.

There are many people who don’t start a mailing list in the beginning of their home business online presence because they feel they don’t have enough to share with a list.
This is a big mistake! Email marketing is NOT dead and you need to be building your mailing list, now.
You don’t have to start by sending out a huge newsletter every week, but you do have to start building that list.
What you send to your email list will really depend on your market, and what they have subscribed to receive. You could do any number of the following:
* A monthly, weekly or bi-weekly html (colors, pictures) newsletter
* A monthly, weekly or bi-weekly text-based email
* An ecourse
* A daily, weekly, or monthly tips list
* A series of autoresponder messages
* Follow-up messages to customers or clients
* A list announcing upcoming events such as teleseminars

Wow time really flies!
Not too long ago I posted about How I Make Money online. In that post I mentioned that I had switched back to WAHMCart from 1ShoppingCart and you wanted to know why!
Well there are a few reasons:
1. Money – I was paying about $100 US for 1SC but when the exchange rates aren’t good that works out to close to $140 CAD – that’s a lot of money for a shopping cart. Now I know it’s a cost of business and all, but I’m a single mom on a budget so I decided it was time to cut this cost.
2. Credit Cards – I wanted to go completely Credit Card free for my business. I just find it’s way too easy to get carried away when expenses are on CC. I’m excited to say my business is now entirely non-reliant on any credit!
Those were the two main reasons why I switched back.
There was a third reason too. 1 Shopping Cart doesn’t allow you to hook up to Paypal for recurring payments and WAHMCart does. So, that being the case if I decided to do some kind of recurring payment product, with WAHMCart I could pay my affiliates monthly too.
Now that I’m back using WAHMCart I found another great benefit of switching back:
WAHMCart is simpler
1 Shopping Cart is a good system but it’s complicated. I know a lot of people who hate using it. I had a lot of clients who never wanted to get in there. The owner of WAHMCart, Regina Baker, told me they really are not in competition with 1 Shopping Cart and I agree. They are different systems, for people with different needs – WAHMCart suits my needs just fine, in fact more than just fine!
The more options and features and choices we have the harder it is to just get moving on anything.
That’s why I love the simplicity of WAHMCart – it let’s me get moving a LOT faster and that’s a VERY good thing.
I’m emailing my list more often, I’m doing more promotions and I’m taking care of business better and it’s because I made the move.
Let me tell you now why I switched AWAY from WAHMCart originally.
1. Technical Issues – When I was using the system they did have some technical issues that caused a lot of copies of the same email to go out to subscribers. As a business owner who wants to look professional that was embarrassing to me. I had to email and apologize and I wasn’t happy about that.
2. To Learn 1 Shopping Cart – At the time when I switched to 1 Shopping cart I thought it would be a good idea to do so I could get in the system and really make sure I understood it for my VA and Affiliate Management clients.
I have to add another comment about the technical difficulties:
Because WAHMCart is a good system and it’s saving me close to $100 per month I’m OK with the fact that they have had some issues. I’m really hoping it doesn’t happen again as I know there was another similar issue not too long before I joined. I do understand in the early days of program development these things happen!
So – that’s why I switched back to WAHMCart.
If you’re looking for a shopping cart, affiliate system and email system all in one for a really fantastic price then I definitely recommend you click the image below and check out WAHMCart, they even have a free 14-day trial:
[UPDATE August 2009]
WAHMCart has been very stable since I re-joined, no technical issues at all and I am still very happy with it. I feel like it was absolutely the right decision to move back from 1ShoppingCart.
I did also choose to have my email list and autoresponder moved to Aweber since my last post. I used to use Aweber and I found both 1ShoppingCart’s and WAHMCart’s systems not as rebust, not as reliable and just not as advanced as Aweber. I was spoiled with Aweber and all it’s advantages so I decided to keep my shopping cart and affiliate program in WAHMCart but host my email list in Aweber.
For those who don’t want the extra expense of Aweber, WAHMCart is still a great option for an email list as well. It is easy to use, allows you to set up automatic emails (autoresponders) or broadcasts (set to a certain time). You also do have the ability to set up tracking to see what clicks were opened in your emails.
