Did You Put Your Heart Into It?

This blog post has been inspired by The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

I’ve started a new habit.

Ever since I started doing the Super Affiliate Handbook review I’ve started reading every night before bed. I take about an hour I might have used for working and I get off the computer to read.

In the past I would have thought that would take me away from my work but it’s actually helping my work, a lot.

Right now I’m reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I’ve read it before. It’s a classic of course.

In the book Stephen talks about the power of treating employees as volunteers because they volunteer their greatest assets….their hearts and minds.

Ever Hate Your Job?

If you’ve ever had a job you hate (and who hasn’t) then you know exactly what I’m talking about!

My Basic Definition of Business Ethics

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

business woman with an inviting handLast week on Marketers Mojo Talk Radio I was speaking with LaTara Ham-Ying. The conversation turned to really knowing who you are in business and what you want from your life.

One of the traits I’ve always prided myself with is having great ethics.

I believe ethics comes down to having a fundamental need for fairness, equality, humility and genuine concern for others.

In business, how do you have ethics when you need to be cut-throat?

Well I don’t believe you have to be cut-throat. Especially not online. I believe you can be ethical and be a highly successful business person. I have to believe that because I REFUSE to be anything BUT Ethical and I REFUSE to be anything BUT Successful!

So what’s my definition of business ethics?

Well I think it is a combination of the following character traits in a business person:

Integrity – Sticking strictly to a moral code or ethical standards.

Honesty – To tell the truth, to never mislead by only disclosing the ‘attractive’ part of the truth and neglecting to disclose all information. Read More→

Managing Business Stress When You Feel Like Quitting

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

I recently got an email from a client who said she felt paralyzed with overwhelm in her business and at the end of her rope.

I think we’ve all felt that way in our business at some point or another. Finding a way to manage business stress can feel impossible when you are in the thick of it. But it is possible!

Overwhelmed Office WorkerSometimes we do things we think we need to do because:
a) Somebody told us we have to (ie.facebook, start a membership, etc)
b) We have always done them
c) We thought it would make us more money

After a while the jobs build up, the overwhelm grows and Read More→

Create an Enticing Event to Attract Sales & Affiliates

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

spotlightI recently got a question from one of my customers about how to attract more affiliates.

She works for a successful online marketer who is doing all the right things with her affiliate program. She has great products, affiliates who are already successful and lots of great promotional tools.

In order to boost the program’s success and get more sales this affiliate manager was looking at adding more affiliates to her program (a common goal for most affiliate managers). So she did what many people do to find new affiliates and started emailing potential partners who would be a great fit. The response just wasn’t good.

I’m not surprised. Read More→

Got my first Ask Angela Question and it’s a simple but great question:

I want to know is there a place I can go to study up on Affiliate programs. I do not really understand it.”

Affiliate Marketing is a hot topic and no doubt you have heard of it if you are into online marketing. But where can you go to learn more and know you’re getting quality, trusted information?

I’ve got a number of recommendations for you here:

1. Super Affiliate Handbook (aff link) – Rosalind Gardner knows affiliate marketing. I like to call her handbook the ‘bible’ of affiliate marketing. It’s something I recommend to all my coaching clients and customers of affiliate management. Before the summer is out I’ll be reading Rosalind’s handbook again and this time I’ll do up a proper review of it to let you know more about what makes it so awesome.

Rosalind also has a blog too, NetProfitsToday.com

For now, here’s a video from Rosalind called ‘Affiliate Marketing Simplified’:

2. Shawn Collins – Shawn knows affiliate marketing. He is the co-founder of Affiliate Summit, one of the biggest affiliate marketing conferences. Shawn also has a feature called ‘Ask Shawn’ where he will answer your affiliate marketing questions.

3. Associate Programs – Allan Gardyne’s site is full of useful information on affiliate programs and affiliate marketing.

4. RIGHT HERE – As I’m ramping up for my upcoming Affiliate Commotion membership program and focusing more on providing information to those who want to be affiliate managers I will be focusing a lot more on affiliate marketing, affiliate programs and affiliate management right here on this blog. You can also sign up for a free course on how to run your own affiliate program by visiting AffiliateCommotion.com now.

I also provide a training course for those who want to become affiliate managers for small business owners. It’s called Affiliate Manager Training School.

5. Affiliate Classroom Magazine, Free – I saw Anik Singal at Affiliate Incubator in Dallas, Texas. He has grown a very successful business around the topic of affiliate marketing and has a top information for anyone wanting to know more about affiliate programs.

6. Affiliate Marketing Forums – There are a number of forums dedicated to affiliate marketing. Spending time there can help you learn more about affiliate programs from the people in the trenches and also make valuable networking connections. ABestWeb.com is a very popular affiliate marketing forum.

That should get you started with Affiliate Programs and Affiliate Marketing! Yes it’s a big topic so just take it a bite at a time and you’ll start getting the hang of it.

Another thing I would suggest is start joining affiliate programs of interest to you. There’s no better way to learn than to just jump right in there and start checking things out from the inside.

Over the last few years I’ve worked personally with over fifty business owners and communicated with hundreds of people through networking, blogging and selling my own products and services.

Having worked on the inside of many ‘successful’ businesses I’ve seen many people over stressed and living a life that seems more of a nightmare than a dream.

I’ve seen business owners who make a lot of money but get very little sleep.

I’ve seen business owners stressed so much they make irrational decisions and work in a constant panic.

I’ve seen business owners who waste their money outsourcing things when they don’t know why.

I’ve seen business owners running a business that is basically SAPPING THE LIFE RIGHT OUT OF THEM!

What’s scary about this is many people create a business that can not run without them. They a literally caught on an endless merry go round and they’re DIZZY!

I’ve also run one that way too.

I got caught up in my own business by taking on way too many client, not screening out poor fitting clients properly, not planning a clear path for my business and honestly just not doing what I needed to do to create a business that supported my LIFE rather than vice versa!

We all want to live, to have that business freedom, to do the things that are really important.

Yes our businesses are important and they do bring joy to our lives when run properly but we can’t forget about the goals we once had because they really ARE achievable!

Don’t assume that once you make a lot of money the rest will take care of itself – it won’t!

You MUST plan for your freedom. Don’t build a business you can’t take a break from, it will only imprison you.

Now this might be the part where you’d expect some step by step plan to make sure you keep your freedom while running a wildly successfully business – well it’s not happening.

You’re a smart lady (or man) and you know what you need to do. Just TRUST YOURSELF and go for it.

Look at your business objectively and ask yourself some questions:
“What can I cut from my business?”
    “What is wasting my time?”
    “What can I automate?”
“What is my most profitable activity?”
    “What can I delegate?”

Look, I know from personal experience that when money is tight it might seem like a good time to settle for whatever you can get but that is DEAD WRONG. When money is tight you need to sharpen your focus, get really clear on what you want and go for it with everything you’ve got.

I know WE can do it!

    Are Ethics Important In Business?

    Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Being in business is tough. Sometimes you need to face decisions that might make you question your ethics and some people may even ask themselves “Are Ethics Important In Business?”

My answer is a wholehearted, unequivical YES.

Ethics are so important to me personally and in business they are just as important. Sometimes there is a line that becomes a little grey when it comes to ethics.

Are You Working With Too Many Variables?

    Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

distractionOne of the things that frustrates me the most when working with clients is doing too many things at once so we can’t see or track results. When I have a client come to me without any idea of how what they are outsourcing is going to make them money then I know it’s time to take a step back to check what we are working with.

As an internet marketer and a service provider I want to see results – and I know my clients do too.

So why do we (myself included here) work on so many projects with so many variables that you’d have to be Einstein to track it all at once? Why are we always working with too many variables?

I want you to do a little exercise with me:

Write down every single thing you are doing in your business right now and WHY you are doing it. Don’t think too hard on this, just start writing.

Then, when you’re done, look at your list and make a new list – this time listing all the RESULTS you expect from each thing you do.

    Then, ask yourself some questions:

    1. Do all the expected results match up, are they the same?

    2. Am I working on tasks with NO expected results? (doesn’t that seem silly?)

    3. What can I cut out RIGHT NOW to help me focus on ONE single result before moving on to another?

    4. Can I boil this all down to one single results-driven focus?

    5. Which of these results will make me the most money?

Recently I did this in my own business and I cut out a LOT of STUFF I just didn’t need to be doing. I also took a really critical look at what I was spending to run my business and managed to cut almost 90% of my expenses!!

It’s a matter of mindset. We start thinking we need to be doing things or spending money on expenses that really are not necessary. I really encourage you to constant challenge yourself to evaluate what you are doing, cut out the time wasters and distractions and get down to tracking your results to increase your profits.

I got an email the other day from a client who asked me to look over an email she was sending out to a potential JV partner. She wanted me to give my feedback and that’s just what I did.

After looking at the letter I found it to be a bit too long and filled with detail. As someone who gets approached for JV’s I want an email that’s:

  • easily scannable
  • gets straight to the point
  • tells me what you want from me
  • I did a quick little rewrite of the original JV email, shot it back to my customer and told her my suggestions. She emailed me later that day to say the person she approached is very interested and will be contacting her soon!

I just love it when something I do makes a real difference to people and this is a great example.

Start Building Your Email List Now!

    Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

There are many people who don’t start a mailing list in the beginning of their home business online presence because they feel they don’t have enough to share with a list.

This is a big mistake! Email marketing is NOT dead and you need to be building your mailing list, now.

You don’t have to start by sending out a huge newsletter every week, but you do have to start building that list.

What you send to your email list will really depend on your market, and what they have subscribed to receive. You could do any number of the following:

    * A monthly, weekly or bi-weekly html (colors, pictures) newsletter
    * A monthly, weekly or bi-weekly text-based email
    * An ecourse
    * A daily, weekly, or monthly tips list
    * A series of autoresponder messages
    * Follow-up messages to customers or clients
    * A list announcing upcoming events such as teleseminars

If you treat your email lists right they Read More→

What is Your Strength in Business?

    Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

If you’re trying to make money on the internet there’s no doubt that you’ve been inundated with emails, websites and information on all the latest and greatest marketing methods you MUST do in order to make your fortune online.

I’ve recently come to realize it’s not the how that matters at all.

That’s right, I said the marketing doesn’t matter.

There are probably a million ways to ‘market’ your business. What you need is something that fits just perfect, that you can commit to and that you will be consistently motivated to continue with.

If you’ve tried every trick in the book to get more visitors to your website or make more sales and nothing seems to work, it’s time to really get to know YOURSELF and understand your strengths.

How do you find your strength? Here are some ideas:

What Do People Tell You You’re Good at?

Yes, you’ve heard this before and sometimes this question is just annoying. What if no one tells you you’re good at something – does that mean you’re good at nothing?? Not at all! It just means you’ve got to start doing more and different things, until people start to RAVE about what you’ve done for them.

    Common Website Design Mistakes..

    Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

istock_000003850016xsmallThere are some common errors in website design that a lot of people tend to do when first getting started. These can make a difference to how your website is perceived, read and visited.

The good news is they’re small items that you can usually fix up quickly and easily!

Let’s go over some of them now:

DON’T use white font on a black background!

This has got to be my biggest peeve in websites. I can’t stand trying to read white text for any period of time.

Some people find this acceptable but if you are wanting your visitors to actually read your site (and EVERYONE wants this) then white font on a black background is just a bad idea. Make it easy on the eyes and go with black font on white background anytime there is any amount of reading involved.

    DON’T use a flash intro
