How Does HTML Work – Creating a Simple Page

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

The other day I did a post about Using Roboform to Get Fast Traffic and got some great feedback.

One of the questions I got was about creating a simple HTML page. Because I’ve been creating my own websites since 1999 it is almost second nature to me to do these types of things and I sometimes forget that not everyone knows how to do it!

That’s why I seriously appreciate your feedback and questions. Don’t ever hesitate to post a comment here asking for clarification if you don’t understand, or you could use my Ask Angela form, or you could email me at angela@angelawills.com. I want to help!

So – to clarify how to get a html page up and how it works I’ve created a new video. Again, let me know if you have any questions and post your comments below. :)

Here’s the link to NVU, the free website creator:

p.s. If you want to create a whole website, you don’t need to know how to use the NVU program I mention above or even know how html works. My favorite way to create easy to use and edit websites is using a self-hosted version of WordPress. Find out more about it and how to get your own wordpress site in 7 days or less by clicking heret.

I Live In a VAN Down By The RIVER!

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Remember that Saturday Night Live skit with Chris Farley?

Well, Chris’ character, Matt Foley, is a motivational speaker. I was young when the episode was on but still saw the humor in someone who’s supposed to be highly successful living in a van (and the fact that it was down by the river seems to make it hilarious!)

Here’s the exact quote I just found in a partial youtube video of the skit: Read More→

On Gene Simmons & Confidence

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

I was watching TV last night (something I do rarely) and I caught ‘The Hour’. I think George Stroumboulopoulos is awesome and has a fantastic interview style, so laid back and open.

On the show he had Gene Simmons, you know from KISS.

And it just struck me how awesome Gene thinks he is.

Audio Version of this Article

MP3 File

Over the last few years I’ve worked personally with over fifty business owners and communicated with hundreds of people through networking, blogging and selling my own products and services.

Having worked on the inside of many ‘successful’ businesses I’ve seen many people over stressed and living a life that seems more of a nightmare than a dream.

I’ve seen business owners who make a lot of money but get very little sleep.

I’ve seen business owners stressed so much they make irrational decisions and work in a constant panic.

I’ve seen business owners who waste their money outsourcing things when they don’t know why.

I’ve seen business owners running a business that is basically SAPPING THE LIFE RIGHT OUT OF THEM!

What’s scary about this is many people create a business that can not run without them. They a literally caught on an endless merry go round and they’re DIZZY!

I’ve also run one that way too.

I got caught up in my own business by taking on way too many client, not screening out poor fitting clients properly, not planning a clear path for my business and honestly just not doing what I needed to do to create a business that supported my LIFE rather than vice versa!

We all want to live, to have that business freedom, to do the things that are really important.

Yes our businesses are important and they do bring joy to our lives when run properly but we can’t forget about the goals we once had because they really ARE achievable!

Don’t assume that once you make a lot of money the rest will take care of itself – it won’t!

You MUST plan for your freedom. Don’t build a business you can’t take a break from, it will only imprison you.

Now this might be the part where you’d expect some step by step plan to make sure you keep your freedom while running a wildly successfully business – well it’s not happening.

You’re a smart lady (or man) and you know what you need to do. Just TRUST YOURSELF and go for it.

Look at your business objectively and ask yourself some questions:
“What can I cut from my business?”
“What is wasting my time?”
“What can I automate?”
“What is my most profitable activity?”
“What can I delegate?”

Look, I know from personal experience that when money is tight it might seem like a good time to settle for whatever you can get but that is DEAD WRONG. When money is tight you need to sharpen your focus, get really clear on what you want and go for it with everything you’ve got.

I know WE can do it!

Mom Masterminds Case Study

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

When I first signed up to Mom Masterminds I was pretty ‘green’ to online business, copywriting, sales process, affiliate marketing and all things online marketing.

I spent my first little while jumping around from business to business:

2006 – Selling Soap:

Alice Seba critiqued this site and it really helped my Copywriting skills (something you can’t really put a $$ amount on).

2006 – Money Making Scents:

I was a member of a candle MLM type business and when I joined Mom Masterminds I asked for advice on how to promote the company and recruit new members to my team online.

When it was said and done at the advice of members at MM I sold my site for $500, not a bad little sum for moving to the next thing.

mid-2006 – Star VA:

This is where things really started to pick up for me.

In 2006 I started my VA business and gained 11 clients in 24 hours and they all came from Mom Masterminds.

The reason I got those clients so fast was that I was willing to work for $5/hr. I know it was crazy but it got me attention and work.

The best thing was it really built a business that allowed me to quit my job and gave me a full time income for almost three years.

I’m doing my best to explain what it’s really like to be a member of Mom Masterminds but the true experience comes from getting in there and being a part of the community.

I have lifelong friends in Mom Masterminds. There are ladies I’ve met in person from the group and there are people I can’t wait to meet one day.

Did I mention the resources?

Oh my goodness, let me see what I can remember:

  • Learned how to do Adwords from the videos in the members area
  • Learned how to edit sites using Frontpage
  • Learned how to start a podcast from the Shoestring Radio resource
  • Learned the basics of WordPress setup, installation & customization from Lynette Chandlers Blogging Starter Pack also from the resource area
  • Used the Sales Page Builder many times to really understand and ‘get’ copywriting

This is years of learning and those are just some that stand out but everytime there’s a new resource added I either check it out right away or know it’s there later when I need it.

Mom Masterminds offers a free preview so there’s absolutely no obligation to check it out:
Check it out here and I’ll see you on the inside!

Check My Email Online

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

I’ve found email to be my very biggest time drain on my business. No matter how hard I try not to, I insist (to myself) on keeping my email inbox open and letting the distractions drive me to be highly unproductive.

Well, a little while ago I said ‘No More!’ and got organized to the extreme with my email. It has saved me TONS of time and eliminated many time drains. It’s also made me more money because now, instead of reading and answering client emails as they come to me, they get filed away into the proper folder until I am on the clock and really ready to deal with client issues.

How Can I Check My Email Online & Simplify My Life?

I’ve always had a web-based email address. Checking my email online means that I am not tied to any one computer to check and respond to emails. This is really important if you travel or spend any time working on different computers. The online email system I always recommend is gmail.

Here are some things you must do to keep your email from draining you of your time!

Email Filters
How did I ever live without email filters!? These little settings are amazing. I use gmail so if you do here’s exactly how to set up filters in gmail: Go to Settings > Click Filters > Click Create New Filter > Enter in the details that you want to filter by such as who the emails are from, the specific email address or specific titles > Click Save

I use filters for so many things now.

All my client email go directly into their own ‘Label’ or folder and get looked at when I am working for that client. All my newsletters go in to one folder and I look at them when I’m ready and not as they come in. I also unsubscribed from a lot of newsletters that just took up my time. All my email subscribe notifications are filtered directly into their own folder and google alerts have their own folders too.

Email Folders/Labels
I had over 100 labels (folders) to keep track of! This was just way too many. Create a plan for your folders just like with anything else.

Ask yourself these questions: What do you need to keep track of? What’s the best way to do that? What folders do you currently have that you can get rid of?

Yes, this will take up a chunk of time but you WILL feel a huge relief when it’s all said and done.

Color Coding
Gmail has some great color coding but I believe programs like Outlook also have this. It’s not enough just to color code and hope you remember. Before you color code, create a plan for what each color means and email it to yourself and save it in a folder where you can reference if you need to.

Starring/Flagging
I found out that Gmail not only has yellow stars but all different colors and also has exclamation points and other little symbols. This is another way to categorize but remember don’t make this too complicated and create a plan for what each star or flag means.

Clearing Out the Inbox
I always liked a clean inbox and tried to clear it out every day. Now with the filters this is even easier to do. It’s amazing how many emails you get that you really don’t need to see or deal with at all. Look at your email inbox right now – do you have emails that you could live without reading at all? Unsubscribe and give yourself some more time (of course, don’t unsubscribe to marketer’s mojo – that one goes in the Newsletter filter ;)

Create Standard Replies
I’m still working on this one and I know it’s going to free up even more time. If you get questions that are asked over and over create typical replies that you can just copy and paste into an email and customize a little where needed. In order to recognize the same questions, start saving all your questions to a folder and then weekly start looking them over for similar questions. One you have questions with typical replies, start a FAQ section on your website and direct people to the FAQ instead of typing up an email reply.

Understand your email program
Do you know how your email program works? Just by taking some time to really look at the settings in my gmail (which I’ve used for 6 years by the way) I found many of the features I’m talking about here today. Just about an extra 15-20 minutes to really get to know what I was using has likely saved me hours and hours of sorting through emails I just don’t need.
