Why Learn Website Design?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

I have a friend who is 33 years old and still doesn’t have her license. Now if she were in a big city with subways to get her anywhere in a zip no problem, but she’s in a more rural area where often she’s left stranded with no way to do what she needs to.

Luckily my friend is married so her husband drives her around for free. But can you imagine how expensive it would be for her to pay a cab driver every time she needed milk, groceries, to shuttle the kids around, visit friends, go to work, etc?

You’re in exactly the same situation if you don’t know how to build, update and maintain your website.

Now let’s say you have it in your budget to pay a website designer and you feel you just don’t have time to do it yourself. I beg to differ and here’s why:

- Indecision Costs: If you don’t understand the software for your website you will spend a lot of time asking your designer for help or revamping what you thought you wanted, this is going to cost you big time. Kind of like if you asked the cab drive to just start driving and you’d figure out how to get there as you go!

- Stagnation Costs: Let’s say you’ve got a great idea for your website but instead of popping in to do a five minute fix you need to engage a website designer for services, explain to them what you need, wait for them to get to it, check if they did it right and then maybe have them tweak if you need changes. This is going to take a LOT longer than a quick DIY tweak. Because of that you’ll end up doing a LOT less and becoming stagnant.

- Knowledge Pays: Even if you do intend to outsource your website design to a smart, responsive and quick website person, it will pay off big time to know your software and know it well.

There’s a Time to Outsource

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should never outsource but I am saying that first you should learn to do it yourself. That way you KNOW EXACTLY where you’re going and how to get there – just like you do when you order a cab!

How?

Well I highly recommend WordPress. It’s a free software program that you install on your hosting account. It can be accessed from anywhere and with a little practice you’ll be able to update your site in no time flat!

Website Design Coaching Program Fast Movers Discount

This is so important and something I see so many marketers needing badly that I’ve decided to put together a thorough coaching program for a limited number of students. For now up until May 12th there is a ‘fast movers‘ special happening where you can get $100 off the already low class fee. Check it out here:

The other day in Mom Masterminds a member posted about Outsourcing and what she should know to get started.

As someone who’s provided a service in one way or another for almost four years now I have some ‘insider’ input to add here.

Sometimes you’re ready to outsource. Sometimes you’re not.

when to outsourceKnowing when to outsource is a skill in itself.

Yea, people make outsourcing sound so easy but over the years I’ve seen many, many people struggle with knowing what to outsource (to me as a VA, affiliate manager, blog designer, etc).

Are you sure you’re really ready to outsource?

My suggestion to you is if you think you ARE ready then ask yourself these four questions:

When to Outsource?

1. Have I cut out all dead projects, time wasters and things I do just because someone told me I should? - You know the things that take up time but don’t actually get you anywhere.

2. Have I automated everything I possibly can to save time and money? ie blog posting, email newsletters. getting as organized as you can be can add hours to your day.

3. Do I have systems for everything? No matter how many times I post a blog post if I don’t open up and use my system it takes me longer. Also systems will help you outsource WAY more easily.

4. Do I know what MAKES me money?*this is a biggy* It is amazing to me how many people think the VA will just intuitively know how to make them more money and they can just sit and wait for the cash to roll in. Like an real business, an internet business takes time (YEARS even) to find the ‘sweet spot’, to really understand your customer or clients needs and to respond to them in a way that sends your profit margins up, up, up. You will only make you more money from outsourcing IF
a) they’re doing tasks that give YOU more billable hours or
b) they’re doing tasks you KNOW will make you more money

So there you have it. Before you outsource make sure you know your business inside and out.

One more thing to note: I’m not suggesting you don’t hire someone to help you do things like build a website, write content, make graphics, etc, while you are still figuring out what makes you profitable. Those are more like ‘tasks’ that you hire out on a project basis. What I’m talking about above is when you are ready to hire someone on a regular basis to be an integral part of your business.

More Value for Your Time
When you own an online business, one of the most important things to remember is how much your time is really worth. Stop Throwing Money Away! Find Out What Works…

chemistryWhen I worked with a lot of clients as a virtual assistant many would ask me a question over the phone or by email that I almost always had a hard time answering.

They wanted to know the best way to do something, whether it be sending out their newsletter in text or html, should they blog or use a static site, should they have links on their salespage and all kinds of other questions.

Now I know a lot of internet marketing techniques, advice and theory and I’m happy to share this information. The problem is that every online business is different, has a different market, different products and different people who are attracted to it. It is NOT a one size fits all when it comes to marketing solutions.

Here’s what I would tell my clients when they asked me that question: Read More→
